Slow Clap reminds me of a Lonely Island song that would be parodying Chlamydia on a 2009 episode of SNL.

This really reminds me of late 2014 when she tested the waters with Baby Don’t Lie & Spark the Fire. I didn’t think she’d ever release anything as bad as STF.

BDL wasn't bad. STF, though, sucked balls.

Baby Don't Lie was a bop. Slow Clap and its accompanying video are embarrassing.

This sounds very much like a song that was written purely with the hope it would do something/anything on TikTok 🤮

That would be the end of her career and have her cancelled from whatever endorsements/judging chair she sits in.

That would be the end of her career and have her cancelled from whatever endorsements/judging chair she sits in. Not particularly fond of blogs, but I think there’s a place for the Harajuku Girls if accompanied by a more tactful but still enthusiastic presentation. They were one of Gwen’s trademarks during those years. Call me corny, but I fail to see why this song and its visual are embarrassing and unbecoming of Gwen. This is actually a good way to reintroduce herself while still remaining true to her imprint on pop music. The song is actually very catchy—it’s pop, but it doesn’t chase trends. It’s a joyous ska-infused pop song that doesn’t take itself seriously. There’s a strong hook and a lively production, and, unlike other songs shooting up the charts, there’s no sleaze or slight to this or ‘Let Me Reintroduce Myself.’ I question now if these negative reactions towards this song and Gwen imply ageism. I think that if this song was done by someone half of Gwen’s age, it would have been more palatable, especially to naysayers. I think the problem is that we’re not looking past our subjective views on Gwen’s age and what’s age-appropriate for her. I’d rather the attention be focused on how she’s skilled and current enough to still figure in the pop music scene. I commend her for continuing yield good pop songs at this point of her career.

She should just do classic pop songs a la Don't Speak/Early Winter/4 in the Morning or go country. The retro is back big time (with Silk Sonic etc) so she should try to be retro in the right way.
That said, Slow Clap isn't that bad, the video though...

That said, Slow Clap isn't that bad, the video though... Going country would just dull her enthusiasm and flavor, and she never really had any inclination towards it apart from her boyfriend. Retro is on the rise, but I like that Gwen isn’t giving us literal interpretations of retro, i.e. pastiche. Her new singles have a ska spin to them—which adds that retro feel since no one in the mainstream has really done ska ever since Sublime, Reel Big Fish, No Doubt, and other bands did in the 90’s—however, they still sound fresh and new.

I’d rather the attention be focused on how she’s skilled and current enough to still figure in the pop music scene. I commend her for continuing yield good pop songs at this point of her career. I don't think it's ageist. Now, naturally Gwen is going to be totally blocked off from pop because she's 51 and that IS ageist, but I don't think the reaction to the song and video is. Used to Love You was a great track IMO for Gwen, b/c it was kind of like Early Winter and some of her other songs she's known for, and it wasn't really chasing trends. Slow Clap (and Let Me Introduce) are both just so cringeworthy in their content that they'd be horrific for whoever was singing it. And then to see her, as a 51 year old woman, dancing around a high school, just is... again cringeworthy. And that would be cringe for anyone. I don't think it's necessarily ageist in that way to say that the video is just immature and beneath her. She was always good at creating trends and it feels like she's been desperately chasing whatever she can for years now.

I don't get what Gwen wants from these releases. I hope she's doing it just for fun, because it appeals to no one. I doubt young people will be interested and older people, that grew up with her songs, will likely be over this high school charade by now... I still like most of her songs, I really think she still has a place in pop radio, but I'd prefer she go more in the "Serious" or "Cool" direction.

I mean, it kind of does relate to her age for me. Because her ass is old enough to know better.
Gwen has always had her quirky moments. Sometimes they work and sometimes they fall flat (lbr, they fall flat A LOT). And nothing about these feel organic to me. It sounds like she's deliberately trying to capture old magic, which is always a recipe for disaster. And I think the songs end up appealing to no one because of it. There's a way to filter these quirks through a more mature sound and make them work. She's done it successfully before. These aren't it.

The woman doesn't age at all. Love her! Her looks in the video really take me back to her earlier eras. Slow Clap, although cute song, doesn't really match up to her iconic hits.

I feel like the Hot AC route with stuff like "Used to Love You" would've been a great route for her, b/c they're mature sounding while also sounded "current". That was her list "hit", wasn't it? Meanwhile, you're right about Slow Clap (and other such songs) appealing to no one. The remix has 143K streams on Spotify after 3 days of release.

You'd think she'd be racing to get the band back together with how the solo career is going, but I guess considering how badly they botched the Push & Shove album/roll out/era, I guess I'm not surprised

Push and Shove was epic. It was ska, power pop, garage rock, and synth pop. It was completely the rollout that botched it: They did their job and turned in some great material that sounded fresh and compelling. The label didn’t do its part in priming the record to succeed. It’s a crying shame for it deserved a better end.

Yeah I can appreciate how Gwen has always been pretty experimental, but it's always been either hit or huuuge miss with her in utilizing that formula and the hits are few and far between. I mean you get bops like "Hollaback Girl" and "What You Waiting For", but then you also get complete dumpster fires like "Spark The Flame", "Wind It Up", and "Slow Clap" so....
Oddly enough I feel like she is most consistent when it comes to balladish type songs which most likely don't naturally associate her with. I mean "Early Winter", "4 In The Morning", "Cool", "Used To Love You" etc are all very strong.

It completely boggles my mind how A) they thought Settle Down and Looking Hot were the singles and B) how Push and Shove (the single) was not the first song out of the gate or even a single AT ALL Like you said, it's a real shame. The label, or whoever was in charge of that era completely what could've been a successful comeback.

I've been going back to Early Winter recently because it's just still damn good after all these years. "Used to Love You" is the route that she should've gone for the new era. She needs to stop doing messes like "Slow Clap"

She should just do a No Doubt album because she is done as a solo artist.

While we wait for this mess of a new album, here are the Billboard radio histories for No Doubt and Gwen's solo career. A personal favorite of mine is her duet with Moby in 2001 which was his only crossover hit. {Gwen - Billboard Radio Monitor} Song | Chart | Peak Position | Weeks Charted | Peak Week |
