I cant remember who kept him from the "penthouse" , But I remember being positively pissed that Travis Tritts " A Great Day To Be Alive" was hung up for several weeks at #2. It seems like it was really high on the year end lists even though it didn't top the charts as well.

That would be Jessica Andrews' Who I Am and Brooks & Dunn's Ain't Nothing 'Bout You, coincidentally, those two artists' biggest hits.

Thank you sir! How long did it sit at #2?
With my fuzzy memory I'm thinking four or five weeks?

Ready for today's pick of a #2 that should have been a #1? I am picking on Charley Pride's Ev'ry Heart Should Have One from 1984. Had that topped the chart, two things would have happened: 1. Pride would have had #1s in ten consecutive years (1975-1984). 2. Pride would have had 30 #1 hits, joining these artists with at least that many: Alabama (33), Ronnie Milsap (35), Merle Haggard (38), Conway Twitty (40), and George Strait (44).

Love Someone Like Me by Holly Dunn from 1987 is the pick of the day. Why? She would have been the third chart topping artist at MTM following Judy Rodman (Until I Met You) and Schuyler, Knobloch & Overstreet (Baby's Got A New Baby). Furthermore, she would have had #1s on two labels: MTM and Warner Bros..

"She Couldn't Change Me" - Montgomery Gentry (finished #7 on Billboard's year end chart in 2001)
"Big Star" - Kenny Chesney (finished #16 on Billboard's year end chart in 2003)

Waylon Jennings spent five big weeks in the runner up position in 1968 with Only Daddy That'll Walk The Line (his biggest #2 hit). If that hit the top, Jennings would have had chart toppers in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s.

Let us go back to 2000 with today's pick. It is by SHeDAISY and the song is I Will...But. If that hit the top, Lyric Street would have had four chart topping artists. The other three are: Aaron Tippin, Rascal Flatts, and Josh Gracin. Furthermore, if I Will...But hit the top, SHeDAISY would have joined other female groups like the Forester Sisters and the Dixie Chicks in having a #1 record.

Seeing since I saluted Ronnie Milsap big time today, let us pick his #2 hit from 1990, Stranger Things Have Happened. Two things would have happened if that went #1: 1. Milsap would have had chart toppers during the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. 2. Milsap would have extended his chart topping run to 17 consecutive years (1974-1990).

The biggest #2 hit of the Statler Brothers' career is Flowers On The Wall from 1966. If that went to #1, two things would have happened: 1. They would have had chart toppers during the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. 2. They would have had chart toppers on two labels, Columbia and Mercury.

Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynn's "I Can't Love You Enough" peaked at #2 for 3 weeks in 1977. What would have happened if it had went #1?
Conway would have had 4 #1's in 1977 ("I Can't Believe She Gives It All To Me", "Play Guitar Play" and "I Already Loved You In My Mind"), he would have had 5 if "Georgia Keeps Pulling On My Ring" went to #1 (only peaking at #3 in December 1977)

By the way, the song that prevented Loretta Lynn and Conway Twitty from getting their sixth chart topper was Ronnie Milsap's It Was Almost Like A Song. I find it odd that given the amount of chart topping hits Twitty has (40), he NEVER had four #1s in a calendar year. Milsap did in 1980 where he was named Country Singles Artist of the Year: Why Don't You Spend The Night, My Heart-chart wise, his biggest hit, Cowboys And Clowns, and Smoky Mountain Rain. Outside of 1977, Twitty would come close in 1973 with these hits: 1. She Needs Someone To Hold Her When She Cries-#1 2. Baby's Gone-#2 3. Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man-with Lynn-#1-my favorite duet of theirs 4. You've Never Been This Far Before-#1-his second biggest hit Also came close in 1982 with these hits: 1. Red Neckin' Love Makin' Night-#1 2. The Clown-#1 3. Slow Hand-#1-his biggest hit of the 1980s 4. We Did But Now You Don't-#2

While we are discussing duets, let us pick a #2 duet that should have been a #1. Ready? It is Rings Of Gold between Don Gibson and Dottie West (1969). Had that reached #1, the following would have happened: 1. Gibson would have had #1s in the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s. 2. West would have had #1s in the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. 3. West would have had #1s on two labels: RCA and United Artists (later Liberty). 4. West would have scored #1 duets with Gibson and Kenny Rogers.

Ray Price had four #2 hits during the 1960s. They are: 1. One More Time-1960-his biggest #2 hit 2. Make The World Go Away-1963 3. Burning Memories-1964 4. The Other Woman-1965 Had any of those hit #1, he would have had chart toppers during the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s.

Billy Currington - Don't and Josh Turner - Firecracker "Don't" was another Mediabase only #1. "Firecracker" didn't have a high audience on Billboard or points on Mediabase as the month of December in 2007 was a fairly week chart overall. While it's disappointing that Josh's song didn't go #1, I don't feel it should have either.

Let us define a key term, shall we?
One hit wonder-an artist with only one top 40 hit. That said, the greatest one hit wonder with a #2 hit is Red Ingle & the Natural Seven. Their Temptation Tim-Tayshun from 1947 was #2 for eleven weeks (you read that one right). If that hit #1, they would lose that dubious distinction!

I saluted this one last year, but if the duet between Earl Thomas Conley and Anita Pointer called Too Many Times hit #1 in 1986, Conley would have had seventeen consecutive #1 hits, beating Sonny James by one. It would have been the second 'ebony and ivory' chart topper following Seven Spanish Angels by Ray Charles and Willie Nelson in 1985. Furthermore, a black woman would have led the list for the first time.

Randy Travis' first #2 hit was in 1987 with No Place Like Home. Had that hit the top, Travis would have had ten consecutive chart topping hits from 1986's On The Other Hand to 1989's Is It Still Over.

If I remember correctly, Zac Brown Band's "Whatever It Is" was a Mediabase #1 and Billboard #2. I always liked this song much better than "Chicken Fried" and felt bad when it missed out on the Billboard chart.

Backroads by Ricky Van Shelton was a #2 hit in 1992. Had that reached the top, Shelton would have had #1s in six consecutive years (1987-1992).

Let us list ALL nine #2 hits of Tanya Tucker's career, shall we?
1. I'll Come Back As Another Woman-1987 2. Love Me Like You Used To-1987 3. Highway Robbery-1989 4. My Arms Stay Open All Night-1990-her biggest #2 hit 5. Down To My Last Teardrop-1991 6. Without You What Do I Do With Me-1992 7. Two Sparrows In A Hurricane-1992 8. It's A Little Too Late-1993 9. Soon-1993
Had all of those went to #1, the following would have happened: 1. Tucker would have 19 chart topping hits. 2. Tucker would have had #1s during the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. 3. Tucker would have topped the charts for eight consecutive years (1986-1993).

BlackHawk has two #2 hits: Every Once In A While (1994) and I'm Not Strong Enough To Say No (1995). Had those went to #1, BlackHawk would have been the second chart topping group on Arista Records. Diamond Rio was first.

Let us pick Jo Dee Messina's Lesson In Leavin' from 1999 as today's #2 hit. If that went to #1, two things would have happened: 1. She would have been the second artist to take it to the top. Dottie West was first in 1980. 2. She would have been the third female artist to have a quartet of chart toppers from a CD. Bye Bye-1998, I'm Alright-1998, and Stand Beside Me-1999 were the others off the I'm Alright CD. The two ladies before her that accomplished the four #1s from one CD were Rosanne Cash with King's Record Shop and The Woman In Me by Shania Twain.

Alan Jackson's "Between the Devil and Me." I think it's one of his best and most underrated songs. Despite being a huge AJ fan all my life, I somehow never heard it on the radio and didn't hear it for the first time until 2009.

Oh yeah, "I Still Miss You" by Keith Anderson, since I just did that song in the "Random Video" thread. Keith's "You Look Good In My Shirt" was to thank for that one.

You must be on a Keith Anderson bend or something. You've mentioned him quite a few times on quite a few threads. I'm going to start calling you Everything Keith Anderson (or EKA for short)!
