Let's go back to 1988 for today's pick. It is by Patty Loveless and the song is A Little Bit In Love. If that hit #1, the following would have happened: 1. Its songwriter, Steve Earle would have had his first #1 as a songwriter. 2. Loveless would have had three #1s on MCA and three on Epic. 3. Loveless would have topped the charts in three consecutive years (1988-1990).

Let's take all of Carrie Underwood's #2 hits (five) and convert those to #1s. The following would have happened: 1. She would have 18 chart topping hits. 2. All 18 would be consecutive-the second longest streak behind Alabama's. 3. All of her CDs would have contained at least four chart topping hits-Some Hearts-5, Carnival Ride-5, Play On-4, and Blown Away-4. 4. She would have topped the charts in eight consecutive years (2006-2013).

Lovin' Her Was Easier Than Anything I'll Ever Do Again by the Glaser Brothers in 1981 should have hit the top so Jim Glaser would have had a #1 as part of a group and a #1 as a solo artist. He topped the chart in 1984 with You're Gettin' To Me Again.

Let us pick Joe Diffie's first two #2 hits off his debut CD, A Thousand Winding Roads. They are both from 1991: If You Want Me To and New Way To Light Up An Old Flame. Had those went to #1, he would have joined Clint Black's Killin' Time CD and Brand New Man by Brooks & Dunn as the other debut CDs to contain a quartet of chart topping hits from 1989-1992.

Let us pick two #2 hits from Sonny James: Room In Your Heart (1966) and Only Love Can Break A Heart (1972). Had those topped the chart, James would have had 21 consecutive chart topping hits. Alabama's 21 in a row from 1980-1987 would have matched it.

A #2 hit back in 1974 was between the TWO Bobby Bares (father and son), Daddy What If. Had that hit #1, the following would have happened: 1. Sr. would have had consecutive #1s for the ONLY time in his career. The follow up, Marie Laveau was his ONLY chart topping hit. 2. Jr. would have been the youngest artist ever with a #1. He was born in 1968. However, he is the youngest ever with a top two hit!

Wynonna Judd is our artist of the day. Her second (of two) #2 hits is Rock Bottom from 1994. Had that hit #1, the following would have happened: 1. Her first three CDs would have contained chart topping hits-Wynonna, Tell Me Why, and Revelations. 2. She would be on the list of those artists with the most #1s twice. She would have had five as a solo artist and fourteen with the Judds.

Speaking of the Judds, if their Give A Little Love hit #1 in 1988, their second streak of chart toppers would have nearly matched their first. They had eight in a row between 1984-1987 (from Mama He's Crazy to Cry Myself To Sleep) and would have had seven in a row between 1987-1989 (from I Know Where I'm Going to Let Me Tell You About Love).

The last #2 hit of the 1980s belongs to Lorrie Morgan. The song was Out Of Your Shoes. Had that hit #1, she would have done the following: 1. Had chart toppers during the 1980s and 1990s. 2. Had consecutive chart topping hits. The follow up, Five Minutes rang the bell in 1990.

Lonely Alone was a #2 hit for the Forester Sisters back in 1986. Had that hit the top of the chart, the following would have happened: 1. They would have had five consecutive chart topping hits from 1985's I Fell In Love Again Last Night to 1986's Too Much Is Not Enough with the Bellamy Brothers. 2. They would have joined Ronnie Milsap (1980), Alabama (1985), and Rosanne Cash (1988) to have four #1s in a calendar year during the 1980s. Their chart toppers in 1986 were: a. Just In Case b. Mama's Never Seen Those Eyes c. Too Much Is Not Enough

Within a two year period, Waylon Jennings would have had three chart topping hits on three labels had Drinkin' And Dreamin' hit the top in 1985. His previous hit, Highwayman with Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson, and Kris Kristofferson was on Columbia (#1), D.A.D. would have been his final chart topper on RCA, and Rose In Paradise (1987) was his only chart topper on MCA.

Conway Twitty would have ended his Elektra/Warner era (1982-1987) on a chart topping note as he started it had Fallin' For You For Years reached the top in early 1987. He started it on a #1 note with The Clown.

The country chart would have been Mac Davis' third chart to conquer if Hooked On Music from 1981 hit #1. He already had a double #1 on pop and adult contemporary lists in 1972 with Baby, Don't Get Hooked On Me.

Two Story House was a #2 duet in 1980 between Tammy Wynette and George Jones. Had that hit the top, the following would have happened: 1. It would have been their fourth #1 duet following We're Gonna Hold On (1973), Golden Ring (1976), and Near You (1977). 2. Wynette would have had #1s during the 1960s, 1970s, and 1980s. 3. For the first time in his career, Jones would have charted consecutive chart toppers. He followed up with his masterpiece, He Stopped Loving Her Today.

The Big City Era for Merle Haggard would have ended on a perfect note had Are The Good Times Really Over I Wish A Buck Was Still Silver hit the top in 1982. That followed My Favorite Memory (#1 in 1981) and the title track (#1 in 1982). He followed up with a #1 duet with George Jones, Yesterday's Wine.

Clint Black would have topped the chart for eight consecutive years (1989-1996) had We Tell Ourselves, his first #2 in 1992 reached the top. The one thing I do know about "We Tell Ourselves" is I hear it all the time on Prime Country on Sirius/XM. Seriously, like every other day I seem to hear it. It's not among my favorite Clint songs, so perhaps I hold that against it when it comes on.

Let us take Merle Haggard's first four #2 hits for MCA Records in 1977 and 1978 as today's picks for #2s that should have been #1s. Those were: 1. If We're Not Back In Love By Monday-1977 2. Ramblin' Fever-1977 3. I'm Always On A Mountain When I Fall-1978 4. It's Been A Great Afternoon-1978-chart wise, his biggest #2 hit
Had those reached the top, Haggard would have topped the chart for twelve consecutive years (1967-1978).

Make The World Go Away would have had two trips to the top had Ray Price's version hit there in 1963. Eddy Arnold's version hit there in 1965.

Randy Travis had two #2 hits for DreamWorks: Out Of My Bones (1998) and Spirit Of A Boy, Wisdom Of A Man (1999). Had those topped the chart, he would have had chart toppers on two labels. Warner Bros. has ALL sixteen of his #1 hits.
