ahhh i have been mia too long and i apologize! but this countdown is flawless. perfect, no missteps, your faves could never (unless your faves are my faves)...etc.
also, though i don't have time to comment on each song i do want to comment on My Need:
"I need you Like the flowers need the rain And I need you Like the blues need the pain
And I need you Like the stars need the night I need you Like the waves need the sea"
can we just talk about how this lowkey is some of the best lyricism ever. similes so easily fall into cliche territory but these are really original and fresh while still being straightforward and to the point.
as you can imagine, reading your list has put me on a TVR kick now!

I'm starting my Sunday morning off with coffee and a little "One More Chance" by Janet. I actually prefer Janet's version to her brothers. Lovely!
Janet has some AMAZING B-sides.

#24 Everytime 1997, Velvet Rope Great melody and gorgeous video. You've already spoken on the impact ;) #23 Someone To Call My Lover 2001, All For You I love it! Her last GREAT single imo. Even though I've loved some of the later ones. #22 Black Cat 1989, Rhythm Nation 1814
"AINT NO ACID IN THIS HOUSE" Janet was giving us EVERYTHING with this song! Fabulous and fierce. #21 Come Back To Me 1989, Rhythm Nation 1814 Her best ballad. I could listen to it all day :'( #20 Go Deep 1997, Velvet Rope BOP!!!

#18 Love Will Never Do (With You) 1989, Rhythm Nation 1814
Instantly recognizable by the intro alone, its classic in that as soon as you hear that intro you know its going down. A sped up ballad basically, it carried a beat but I always viewed it as ballad, even though its midtempo. I love that its one those sing along chorus that from the first listen hooks you in.
Janet sings this so supremely, her voice just sounds like birds chirping in nature, in the best way possible. Familiar, nostaligic and will always remain a mainstay for me and apparently quite a few others. I should add that it was a #1 hit on billboard not that it matters greatly song was incredible regardless, but historic in that was the only album to produce #1 hits in 3 different years, from 1989-1991. Now that is durability and shelf live if I must say so myself!
I was going to talk about how beautiful and perfect the video was but otherwise touched on it so I will let them carry the commentary! simply gorgeous. A sensual angel, especially at the end of the video when she is doing those poses and the sun shines on her face, ughh.
Linnethia Monique Sex appeal with nothing more than an infectious smile and some jeans. If you don't immediately get happy when this track drops you need some love in your life. ASAP. The call out is my favorite section. The reason why I love 80s and early 90s music is because of music like this; 5-6 minute songs that captivated you for every second and had you reeling for more when the song starts to fade out with the synth.
Janhova's Witness the iconic SEVENTH top five single from RN1814 (her best album), serves us jacksonese vocal realness, boldness and joy all at once! And the iconic debut of sexy janet in the video yes lord!
#LisaRinna It's Pop perfection and pretty much defines the transition between the younger Janet and the more mature, sexually conscious Janet. The music video is flawless, she looks divine and it represents this organic transition in her image: the military suit-wearing Janet is gone to make room for the tight jeans and tank top and Janet having a good time and flirting on the beach instead of executing the precise dance routine she is known for. A sign of what was to come with her self-titled classic.
@antigonerising take what I said about Alright and maybe multiply it by two? This was the final single from probably my most favorite Janet era and boy did she end that era on a note of perfection. Here there is only one horn. We're going to ignore that this horn was basically filling in for the high note that we all know she could not reach, because I actually love the way she incorporated that. I live for that part. I really don't even know what exactly to say about this song. It's just so light and sweet. It's like the musical equivalent to a perfect spring day. And on a shallow note this is probably the most gorgeous moment for Janet as far as videos go.

My favorite single from "Rhythm Nation" (except maybe "Come Back to Me") but for some reason it took me years to appreciate it. At least I do now, haha! Agree with everything said here. I actually was thinking about that the other day, that tracks used to be anywhere from 4-7 minutes long, while most everything now is 3-4 minutes only, and yet the newer, shorter stuff is sometimes a lot harder to sit through, lmao. YESSS that is my favorite part of the song as well. I get chills.

#17 And On and On (B side) 1993, Janet
I always felt some of the B-sides and unreleased, Janet tracks are just fantastic! This one takes the cake for me for a couple of reasons. One because its one of those easy flow summery songs that you can just ride around to and two it just makes me happy, feel good record. Like maple syrup on pancakes this just feels right.
Her vocals silky, the beat relaxed but so many elements to it and with all the heavy subject matter songs she has put out, this one stands up with the best of them. I believe she has only performed this song once, it has been lost and forgotten by most of the public but I'm sure, Janet fans will love this one. If you can listen and not fall in love with her vocals then get ya ears checked out!
Its a rare and hidden gem but its a must and essential if you are going to experience all of Janet Jackson, she had so much variety to offer.

"And On and On" is a summer playlist staple! I've been playing it a lot this past week. I can't play it after September because it makes me hate the cold weather even more.

Noteworthy B-sides: You Need Me The Skin Game And On And On One More Chance 70's Love Groove - "afros, incense and blacklight..." - yes, Lawd! God's Stepchild Can't Be Stopped - hidden track, but AWESOME nonetheless Pops Up Put It On You Accept Me
There are others but I'm going by memory.

#16 Got Till It's Gone 1997, Velvet Rope
Lets delve right back to one of my favorite albums of all time and plug a song that made some waves when it dropped. Let me just say it wasnt the HUGE depature that people made it seem, outside of the production. Janet's lyrics and music always had variety so I'm not sure why people freaked out. It was hailed as Janet moving from pop to harder edgy side, pls. I guess people freaked out cause she was less glamorous , more afro centric or something, she still looked hot as f**k , if you ask me.
What happens when you infuse one of my favorite producers with one of my favorite singers? A earworm of a song that is a blend of neo-soul and r&b done with precision and perfection! I will forever be grateful for this song because it made me appreciate Janet on a whole other level. I love the addition of Joni Mitchell and her sample and of course the rap from Q-tip.
What i love and this is a tip for other entertainers, dancers or whatever you wanna call them, you don't always need to carry a song with your feet, Janet over and over has proven she can still make classics just from employing great lyrics, a great conceptual video and a voice that is equal parts soothing and captivating in its sweetness and tone.
My only regret is that we didn't get more funky, Q-tip produced songs her her over the years, these two should have done a entire album together. That realization grew when I heard 'Meteorite" from Q-tip and Mariah recently, Q-tip >>>JD.
Linnethia Monique I remember waiting for the 1997 MTV Video Music Awards because this song would be premiering before the show. I was floored as a kid. Janet was in her experimental/free stage and she was going to shatter the social boundaries. Others have tried to sample this classic Joni Mitchell track afterwards like Kelly Rowland, but this is easily the best flip of the sample to date. Janet, Jimmy and Terry made it sound as if she was actually apart of the recording process. Q-Tip comes in with a slick verse that matches perfectly with the relaxing groove. "Now why you wanna go and do that love huh?" I wish the full "Internet Age" was around so that we could've got some footage from studio session. The various laughs and banter with her and Q-Tip made me so happy that they were able to reconnect after Poetic Justice.
Rose "Payola" Nylund Got Til It's Gone because it's so chill and the beat is so dominate. I still listen to that one a lot. It's my most played Janet song.

#15 Rhythm Nation 1989, Rhythm Nation GOD said so- "Rhythm Nation" was the song that got me into Janet so, respect, etc". PRAISE THY LORD. When that elevator in the intro drops and you hear Janets spoken word, the world stops, a legend is born. Still unsure watch Janet and her army work that dance floor like no other woman can.
Arguably her signature and best known track, a classic in the truest sense of the word and a song that inspired and cause more copy cat teas than any other. She changed the face of female pop music for a lifetime. I know another woman sometimes gets credited with being the most revolutionary pop female but I don't subscribe to fallacy, sorry come again.
A social concept song with powerful lyrics that wasnt about sexual revolution and crassness practiced by other divas of that time, but a deeper social message of uniting as one people, black or white, gay or straight, differing cultures and beliefs uniting as one, powerful stuff from that era and she made it look and sound good. I believe social issues are best raised while entertaining the masses and getting your message out to as many people as possible, she succeed.
One of the best videos of all time imo, classic, world renowned, remembered and copied for dear life, Janet however can never be replicated.
Bottom Line one of the most important, songs and videos by one of the most important black artists or not, in music history.

I'd definitely put her up there. She remains as my No. 2 female, so I have a different feeling on the "most," of course. :) She certainly wasn't the only who touched on social issues at the time, but that's here nor there for this thread to celebrate Damita Jo Jackson.
"Love Will Never Do"- always liked the contrast in vocals in the verses- but as it was meant to be a duet, it makes sense. Musixally, it wasn't far off of "Miss You Much," but they were both from the same album, so there's a symmetry there. "And On and On"- probably my favorite Janet B-side. Very summery and fun.
"Got Till It's Gone"- Always loved this. Great use of a sample; I even like Q-Tip's contribution.
"Rhythm Nation"- Essential Janet. (And, they finally credited the sample in the Number Ones album.)

#16 Rhythm Nation 1989, Rhythm Nation I remember being so bummed that Rhythm Nation stalled at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100. Was it Phil Collins that blocked her? Janet's Rhythm Nation outfit that she wore in the video was part of the "Women that Rock" traveling exhibit sponsored by the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. #Legendary
