Um, judging from this brief clip of a teaser for the new single "American Kids", I don't know if it's just me but I wish Kenny would get away from this island type of music and get back to what he used to do and that is story songs about life that are not island related. I really didn't care for his last album, hope this new one is better and less island based. I will give him a chance with this since it is Summer and hope it does well for him. He hasn't had a #1 hit now for almost a full 2 years now. I hope this song is a good one when it is released later this month. I miss the old Kenny with songs like "Fall In Love", "All I Need To Know", "Me And You", "When I Close My Eyes", "She's Got It All", "A Chance", "That's Why I'm Here", "You Had Me From Hello", "What I Need To Do", "Don't Happen Twice", "Young", "The Good Stuff", "A Lot Of Things Different", "Big Star", "I Go Back", "The Woman With You", and "Anything But Mine".

That didn't sound 'island' at all to me. I heard a percussive melody behind a Sitar.

That clip does not sound promising to me. Sounded really campy. I'm hoping the song is a lot better than that preview, I've. been looking forward to his next album.

Yeah the clip didn't do much to get me excited either, but I'm optimistic the full version will be better. I do want Kenny to release another song like "Don't Blink", "There Goes My Life" and "The Good Stuff" again and hopefully this album will be along the lines of When The Sun Goes Down or Poets And Pirates: Just Who I Am. Life On A Rock was OK (the lead single was not good IMO), but radio single success wise, it clearly wasn't. "When I See This Bar" I enjoyed but was not surprised it failed to crack the top 10.
He had a message on Twitter this past week that simply read 9.30.2014. Perhaps that's the date his new album drops?

Sounds intriguing to me. I'll take this, or "campy" or anything else other than what he built his career on. It's refreshing when artists of his stature take different routes to experiment with.

I respect artists taking different routes to experiment with as well like Eric and Brad have done recently. But that doesn't mean the execution will be there. I do understand what you mean though.

I'm really excited for this, although that clip didn't offer much of anything to get me even more excited (it was hardly a clip in the first place). Just the announcement of a new Kenny single will have to be enough excitement, I guess.

I'm looking forward to this, as usual. Kenny remains one of my all-time favourite male country artists. I hope he can have more commercial success with this new project than he did last time around.

Also excited for a new Chesney single. I have primarily liked his emotional ballads like El Cerrito Place, You and Tequila (or cute heart string tuggers like There Goes My Life) way more than his uptempo stuff, so I'll have to reserve judgement.

As a Bengali-American who grew up listening to a reasonable amount of classical Indian music, the timbre and resonance of the stringed instrument in the clip don't sound remotely like a sitar to me. I hear an acoustic slide guitar, but I could be wrong. I agree, though, that the clip doesn't sound particularly island-y, either. The instrumental part of the song sounds sprightly and interesting, but as is often the case for me when I listen to a Kenny Chesney song, I'm not hearing much character in Kenny's voice. The feel of the song does feel refreshingly light and jaunty compared to Kenny's recent uptempo/midtempo singles and much of today's radio, though. So I'm looking forward to hearing the rest of the song, especially since it appears that Shane McAnally is involved.

Music in the clip sounded cool, but it wasn't much to go on.

This clip sounds okay; it doesn't sound one of KC's typical summer songs (thank God).
Judging by the single cover, though, it seems like Chesney might be going for yet another "I'm-45- and-I'm-Still-Young summer anthem.

According to an ad in tonight's Country Aircheck the release to radio is now set for 6:30 AM CDT a week from Friday on June 20th, which is rather unconventional to say the least, although both 'Never Wanted Nothing More' as well as 'Good Girl' were both sent to radio on a Thursday, with spectacular results.

From tonight's Country Aircheck Weekly: Goes to radio on Friday, June 20, at 6:30 am central time. Sounds to me like a Clear Channel deal.

I'm not excited about this at all. The clip isn't very encouraging. Plus I tend to enjoy Chesney's slower, deeper songs and the way he describes it doesn't get my hopes up.

KNIX here in Phoenix (Clear Channel) said they'll be playing this once an hour starting tomorrow morning. I'm assuming the other Clear Channel stations will do the same.
Not looking forward to the once-an-hour deal, but I'm interested to see what Kenny's come up with.

Kenny's song will probably debut at #1 like Garth's song did after a long absence at radio. Kenny will have to fight for his place back in radio that now belongs to Luke Bryan or was Kenny ever that big??
I just wish things were like it use to be when a song was played on huge request by fans and not by labels duking it out or favoritism shown to certain artist and corporate people deciding who the next big thing is.

I just wish things were like it use to be when a song was played on huge request by fans and not by labels duking it out or favoritism shown to certain artist and corporate people deciding who the next big thing is. This song won't debut anywhere close to #1. It will only have 3 days of airplay (Friday-Sunday) before the chart comes out, so a debut somewhere in the 30's is likely (and only because of hourly spins tomorrow). As for the Kenny-Luke question, I don't want to start a fan war or anything but I don't think the big names of today are as popular as Kenny, Tim, Keith, and others (obviously Garth, Shania, etc) at their peak. It's a different age, though...singles routinely sell 1-2 million copies these days and if an album is able to surpass 1 million it's considered a huge success. A couple of the recent albums from guys like Luke and Jason have managed to sell 2-3 million, but Kenny has two 4x Platinum albums and another that went 3x Platinum, and guys like Luke and Jason just haven't done nearly enough yet for me to feel they are as big as Kenny was. Keith's 2 biggest albums are 3x and 4x Platinum, respectively. And Tim has multiple 3x and 4x Platinum albums as well as a 6x Platinum album. I guess Luke and Jason and Blake are probably as popular now as Toby, Kenny, Tim, and Keith were 10-15 years ago, but they haven't been cranking out hits for nearly as long as those guys have, and I personally don't feel like today's superstars have released as strong of material either. I don't think a lot of Luke's singles will stand the test of time, but I guess we'll have to wait and see. I certainly don't hear many of Luke's previous hits on the radio very often. Garth Brooks' first 7 albums sold anywhere from 12-23 million copies apiece worldwide. And Shania's 2nd, 3rd, and 4th albums all sold well over 10 million apiece in the US alone.

Comparing album sales from the 90's and early 2000's to today is really unfair. Double Platinum now (at least in the years 2013-2014) would have to equate to at least 6x platinum back in the day. Kenny was bigger back in the day though simply because when he toured, he would sell out NFL stadiums, and he was one of the top grossing artists of the past 25 years or something, I remember reading it on Billboard recently. Luke is pretty big though, and could continue to get even bigger with 2 more really solid albums. I think much like Kenny, Luke has the ability to attract non-Country fans to the genre, making him a bigger star then his peers.

Yes, that's why I said this in my post: Also, I don't think 2x Platinum now would equate to 6x Platinum back in the day. I don't think there is really a way to figure it out unless you did it like movies where things were adjusted over time due to inflation. The only problem with that is that movies haven't exactly had something else come along and take a chunk out of those sales (whereas albums have lost sales to individual track sales). I don't think Luke's material or much of the stuff from Jason, Blake, FGL, etc. has really made much of an impact on country music. I'm not saying that Kenny was necessarily a game-changer either but I feel that, overall, his contributions to country music have been more impactful and more meaningful. Most of Luke's material is fairly harmless but I find so much of it to just be good-time "fluff" so it's hard for me to view most of it as a big contribution to country music despite his recent string of hits (and again, you could say the same for many of the recent hits from Blake, Jason, and FGL...all in all, I just feel that a lot of the 'bro' stuff won't leave much of a lasting impact the way that some of the really big hits from Kenny, Keith, Tim, Toby, etc. did).

Just heard it and I have to say I'm digging it. A little different while staying true to who he is. Going to be perfect for his shows while also radio friendly.
Last time he took some time with a album he produced Hemingway's Whiskey which produced 4 number 1's. This is a good start to an album that I have big hopes for.

Lyrics:
Doublewide Quick Stop midnight T-top Jack in her Cherry Coke town Momma and Daddy put their roots right here ‘Cause this is where the car broke down
Yellow dog school bus kickin’ up red dust Pickin’ us up by a barbed wire fence MTV on the RCA, no A/C in the vents
Chorus We were Jesus save me, blue jean baby Born in the USA Trailer park truck stop, faded little map dots New York to LA We were teenage dreamin’, front seat leanin’ Baby, come give me a kiss Put me on the cover of the Rolling Stone Uptown down home American kids Growin’ up in little pink houses Makin’ out on living room couches Blowin’ that smoke on a Saturday night A little messed up, but we’re all alright
Baptist church parkin’ lot, tryin’ not to get caught Take her home and give her your jacket Makin’ it to second base, but sayin’ you went all the way Monday afternoon at practice
Sisters got a boyfriend Daddy doesn’t like Now he’s sittin’ out back, 3030 in his lap In the blue bug zapper light
Repeat Chorus twice
