I don't like this song because of the "movement" I love the song itself, melodically, vocally, lyrically!
And I don't think there is anything wrong with wearing make-up, people should do whatever they want to feel good about themselves! :)

This was released two days after the "Try" video was uploaded.
Another mega talent, but trash.

Pandering, gimmicky, contrived, blah. And as a male, this really does nothing for me.

Well we all know the pass on "Hold On" was one of the biggest misses in CHR/POP history, rather it went for adds or not. 10 million views in a week, nearly a million in free downloads on iTunes, sitting pretty in the top 20 on iTunes, and I couldn't hate something from her more. Colbie Caillat, a talented, beautiful, incredible artist, going for this gimmicky s**t. It works, I don't understand why these types of things continue to work, but they sure do. Hey girl, take your make-up off, you're pretty underneath. OMG REALLY? DONE! I'm taking it off! Wait, nobody is doing that. Make-up will continue to be a dominate product in the world. Girls will watch this video and 10 minutes later cake some on to go to the grocery store. Nothing will change, yet people thumb it up like a movement is beginning. The whole video made me cringe, I'm gonna take my wig off and I'm gonna pull off my fake eye lashes! It was just like all the same s**t I've seen so much. Just the other day I watched a John Legend video where some girl took her wig off - BUT SHE'S STILL BEAUTIFUL! What is wrong with people wanting to improve their appearance, or cover up unfortunate things that happened to them. If I got some sort of disease that caused me to lose my hair, I'd get a wig and I wouldn't think twice. I wouldn't think "god, why do I have to wear this wig, I wish people would just find bald me beautiful." No, I'd just wear my wig because I feel like I like myself better with it on. Girls can think they look prettier with make-up on. What's wrong with that? Guys can feel like they look better with make-up. Let them. Let everyone. Why is it that removing make-up is the bold statement and not wearing make-up and being proud of yourself the bold statement? Songs like this are also inherently unfair to people who AREN'T beautiful. It's easy for Christina Aguilera to say you're beautiful in every single way when she's also beautiful in the way that matters most to society. What did she know (at the time she released that song, when she was considered one of the hottest women in the world) about never getting asked to go to dances, never getting noticed at bars and getting bullied for your face or weight? (And even if she did, it's easy to get over bullying when you're a famous singer and getting paid millions to show off your face and body). Colbie Caillat might not have to try, but not everyone has naturally pretty features and a tall, fairly slim build. Meghan Trainor is singing about "bringing booty back" but is barely heavier than conventionally hot celebrities. It's not the singers' fault - it's the industry's. No one who was ACTUALLY obese and ugly could succeed with this type of song. And that's a problem. =========== Plus, the fundamental notion of not going the extra mile is ridiculous. Maybe you don't go the extra mile to attract a boy, but you should certainly be going to the extra mile to achieve everything you can in life.

You guys are missing the point of this song entirely. It's a song about finding your inner beauty and being proud of yourself because you like who you are. It has nothing to do with actual looks. Colbie isn't singing about taking your make-up off and liking what you see. She's singing about looking past the skin to see yourself for who you actually are. If you like yourself, then you don't need to try hard to impress anyone else. To an extent that does include looks, but there's so much more to it than that, and this song is speaking about all of what makes a person beautiful, not just looks.

I don't think anyone truly doesn't understand the point. No one thinks it's just about makeup or looks, and no one really thinks Colbie is slut-shaming anyone who wants to wear makeup for THEMSELVES rather than for boys. The issue is with how the message is being communicated and how the message is limited in its relevance to the real world. Songs like this, far too often, are communicating their message to the individual who feels insecure rather than the society that is actually making them insecure. Whether you feel comfortable in your own skin or not, if you don't look like Jenna Dewan, you're probably not landing Channing Tatum (or, if you go beyond the surface, someone who's as intelligent, funny or successful as Tatum is good-looking). So how do you tell a girl that wants to date a guy like that not to worry about trying? I'm a guy who lives in a city with tons of wealth. There are very pretty, sophisticated, desirable girls that I can't realistically land because of the money I make, so why shouldn't I try to make more? If Colbie Caillat doesn't try, she can still get almost any guy she wants. That's not true of the average woman.

Some of you people are beyond judgemental. I mean beyond. Colbie in the interviews I read did not BASH nor talk about anyone else but HERSELF. Who are any of you tell her what to feel? She said she was being pushed by record labels to look and act a certain way. She talked with Babyface and she said I don't think i want to do that but I feel pressured. None of this conversation pertained to anyone but her. This song doesn't pertain to anyone else but her.
If she is tired of photoshop and looking a certain way and wants to deglamorize her image , good for her. If you dont like it thats your business, but its also not your business what she feels.

"Songs like this are also inherently unfair to people who AREN'T beautiful."
Kanimal, seriously? The song is about embracing your natural self regardless. Did you watch the video? There is every type of people, even senior citizens. Loving yourself is something we all need to work on, she is working on herself. I just can't fathom how it possibly is unfair to people who aren't beautiful. I read your reasoning and its still escapes me.
"I'm a guy who lives in a city with tons of wealth. There are very pretty, sophisticated, desirable girls that I can't realistically land because of the money I make, so why shouldn't I try to make more?"
The song is NOT about you, and it seems this song might help you overcome some of your own insecurities. Maybe there are some sophisticated and "desirable" girls that you can attract if you changed your mindset and attitude. Not every woman or man is out for money, even in these days. Newsflash, every city has tons of people with wealth not just yours, not every girl cares about your important jobs and your earning at this "job". Some people, gasp actually enjoy each others company, and just want someone to love their personality and something a little bit deeper. Work on that and you will be able to attract more people.

And I agree that missing out on "Hold On" was just awful!

^ I know, I wasn't trying to say one ripped off the other, as I highly doubt either of them would have been produced in under 2 days, but it's just so funny how trendy this easy thing is.

I still don't see how this is gimmicky, considering all the blatant other gimmicky stuff that gets a pass why is it when its something positive people jump on the "oh this gimmick", shit.

I think that this type of cynicism towards anything remotely positive is more trendy than any "gimmicky" thing. The message of this song isn't original, but I love the way the video does this. It's simple and a lot of people relate to it. It's not about the make up or whether someone looks better with it or without it, it's about you liking you at the end of the day. As long as you like you, you're usually in pretty good shape. That's what Colbie is trying to do here.

I will give people the benefit of the doubt and say they have no idea what they are talking about. If you read through her interview before you watch the video its clear like night and day it comes from a real place and woman who was struggling with the industry vs image vs real her. It scream authentic coming from Colbie. Maybe i could understand if people actually had a issue with gimmicky if they watched Katy's "Unconditionally" and then seen her other video right after that and felt it was ingenuine or whatever or that she tapping into the "real woman" angle for a minute, but even then people have complexities about them. I just think and agree we are so cynical and judgemental now that we always think we know best for everybody else and we always know what is going on in everybody else's head.

This song is beautiful and personal and i think it will be huge on pop and other genre radio types. Buzz is huge right now on TRY and if radio gets involved then this song could be BIG>

This is doing well on my station's daily trash or stay contest. I like the song for the most part (liked her last attempt at a hit, too). One complaint - it may have too many "trys" in it. Maybe too repetitive to become a major hit but I do think it has some potential if promoted.

This has a great message and I can certainly see why lots of people like it. Unfortunately, other than the lyrics, I find the song to be very boring.

I mean, is John Mayer can have a hit with "say what you need to say" [x13452347502375028705384760859], then I don't think repetitiveness really matters anymore.
