^ You're right. I think we should ask mediabase if they can create a format for post grunge, hard rock, and heavy metal songs so that fans of that music don't have to complain about it not being played on alternative. Wait, such a format already exists? It's called...active...rock? Wow, I wouldnt have guessed with all the complaining in this forum. I expect my Alt stations to play Active rock just as much as I expect my Pop stations to still play Nickelback and Daughtry. I'm not opposed to alt stations playing active leaning songs, I just think complaining about lack of alternative chart success is silly considering those songs have a core format to compete on.

I'm not against Alt and Active sharing similarities either, I think Rise Against is the perfect example. But sometimes it's like complaining that your Hot AC didn't play "Rack City".

Green Baron, if you want to save yourself the headache of seeing songs you hate do well, just do what I did recently and give up on Alternative for the time being. No matter how much we rant/complain, Alternative probably isn't going to change or get better anytime soon. I'm just going to follow Active more closely from now on, as it really is more in line with what my tastes are. It's also gotten to the point where I can barely even look at the Alternative chart without cringing. Also, the new artists being played on Active are IMO far more tolerable than the ones getting play on Alternative.

I would, but the bands that have a history on Alt need to do better on alt, and someone get him into the pm

This is actually kinda growing on me, and I like how the lyrics do have some underlying tension to them (in spite of the banal opening lines). Kinda like Johnny Kemp's "Just Got Paid" re-imagined as an indie pop song (kinda farfetched, I know, but whatever). Hope it rises higher.

I just listened to it in between "Leader Of Men" and "Breathe" by Nickelback. It kinda made me like it more, probably because of the epicness that surrounded it.

Wait, such a format already exists? It's called...active...rock? Wow, I wouldnt have guessed with all the complaining in this forum. Yeah, I really don't see why all the indie-hating post-grunge/nu-metal fans on this board don't just take solace in the fact that they can still hear their type of music on Active Rock radio. (EDIT: I do see that one such poster is taking that route, at least.) I know the Alternative format was a different animal during the oughties, and I guess it can be hard for people who grew up with that iteration of the format to deal with the change. But the fact of the matter is that most people who identify their tastes as "Alternative" (and not just "pop posters") are more into the type of music that the format is playing now, and many stations have seen ratings success as a result of the current direction. I'd also say that the current direction is a lot closer to what Alternative used to be prior to the late 90's. I'm not sure what to make of this song yet, but I don't see why it should be dismissed as "poppy" just because it doesn't have a brooding guitar riff and angsty lyrics. Also, what could possibly be gained by trying to convince a band that stations shouldn't play their music?

Interesting - this has completely slowed down as far as airplay but also just had a pretty big adds week. So I guess it can go either way at this point.

Nah, it's a problem because Alternative was better than Active from 1991-2012. And the bands that have had a history of charting high aren't doing well anymore, and that sucks, which pisses me off because they have a history on Alt.

I can't help but feel you'd hate most of what was big in 1991. You're just seeing it through rose-coloured glasses.

For the bands I know you like, you should probably start that time period off around 1994. Grunge was big from 1991-1994 and beyond with Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, and Pearl Jam coming out, but during that time Alternative had plenty of songs I'm not sure you'd really like or would consider appropriate to be on the chart.

as time passes, history filters out most of the forgettable/really bad music. I'm not sure you'd have the same opinion if you were around back in the 90s and heard all of the songs that charted instead of just the massive its.

Although I did say that I'd follow Active more closely, it would make that a lot easier if I had an Active station that came through to where I live. And I'd rather just turn on the radio in the car than have to seek out a stream somewhere online.

I'm starting to feel what I am Jack Bauer, DAMMIT! is saying. It's like me a few years back wanting KISS, Def Leppard, Aerosmith, Van Halen ect.. to chart high on Active Rock. They did modrately top 10 , but nothing like in the 80s. I'm perfectly happy with Indie Pop cuz it reminds me of 80s New Wave Synth pop, but poor Jack Bauer. Some one throw the man a bone.

Meh. I prefer both this and "Take It as It Comes" at #11 to "Gotta Get Away" (which is inevitably going top ten anyway), which is easily the least memorable of any of the singles from the Black Keys' last 3 records.
