Sia Earns First No. 1 Album On Billboard 200 with '1000 Forms of Fear'

Singer-songwriter Sia nabs her first No. 1 album on the Billboard 200 — and her best sales week ever — as "1000 Forms of Fear" debuts atop the list. The new album, released on Monkey Puzzle through RCA Records, sold 52,000 copies in the week ending July 13, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

The album was released Tuesday, July 8.

Sia took a rather unconventional route to promoting her album. She opted not to show her face during TV performances of the album's single "Chandelier," and didn’t pose for traditional photo shoots. Instead, she performed on TV with her back to the camera while a dancer (or dancers) interpreted the song — as seen recently on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show," "The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon" and "Jimmy Kimmel Live!"

The promotion of the album effectively launched with her uniquely photographed Billboard magazine cover story last year. She was pictured on the Nov. 2 cover with a bag over her head that read, in part, "This artist is responsible for over 12 million track sales … and doesn't want to be famous."

Sia previously charted twice on the Billboard 200, with 2008's No. 26-peaking "Some People Have Real Problems" and 2010's No. 37 hit "We Are Born." ("Some People" logged Sia's previous biggest sales frame, when it launched with 20,000.) Prior to that, she reached the Heatseekers Albums chart with 2006's "Colour the Small One" (No. 14).

Sia is probably best-known as the female voice heard on David Guetta's "Titanium" and Flo Rida's "Wild Ones," both of which were top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100. She also co-wrote Rihanna's No. 1 smash "Diamonds," Ne-Yo's "Let Me Love You (Until You Learn to Love Yourself)," Beyonce's "Pretty Hurts" and Britney Spears' "Perfume," among other tunes.

"Chandelier," meanwhile, recently became Sia's first top 20 hit on the Hot 100as a lead artist. It jumped 20-17 on the chart dated July 19.

One last note on "1000 Forms of Fear": It logs the lowest sales figure for a No. 1 album in nearly two years. It's the smallest since the Aug. 11, 2012 chart, when Zac Brown Band's "Uncaged" led the list with 48,000.

Following "1000 Forms of Fear" on the new Billboard 200 is the resurging "Frozen" soundtrack, which rises 5-2 with 46,000 (up 23 percent). It jumps thanks todeep discounting at both Amazon MP3 and Google Play, where the album's price was temporarily dropped to $3.99 during the tracking week.

Sam Smith's "In the Lonely Hour" holds at No. 3 with 42,000 (down 6 percent), and Ed Sheeran's "x" dips 2-4 with 35,000 (down 34 percent). Last week's No. 1, Trey Songz's "Trigga," falls to No. 5 with 34,000 (down 67 percent).

Veteran rock band Judas Priest collects its highest-charting album ever, as "Redeemer of Souls" enters at No. 6 with 33,000. It's the band's 17th studio effort, and first since 2008's "Nostradamus." Judas Priest has been charting since 1978, and "Redeemer" is the group's 18th charting album — and first to visit the top 10. The band previously topped out at No. 11 with "Nostradamus."

The "Now 50" compilation climbs 11-7 with 22,000 (up less than 1 percent), while the Dirty Heads' "Sound of Change" bows at No. 8 with 21,000. It's the first top 10 effort for the group and best sales frame yet. The act is currently in the top 10 of the Alternative Songs chart with "My Sweet Summer," which rose 12-10 on the July 26 list.

Miranda Lambert's "Platinum" falls 7-9 with 20,000 (down 20 percent), and Lana Del Rey's "Ultraviolence" slips 8-10 with 18,000 (down 29 percent).

Overall album sales in this past chart week (ending July 13) totaled 4.1 million units, down 5 percent compared with the sum last week (4.3 million) and down 19 percent compared with the comparable sales week of 2013 (5 million). Year-to-date album sales stand at 129.2 million, down 15 percent compared with the same total at this point last year (151.8 million).


The week's 4.1 million haul is the smallest weekly sum for album sales since SoundScan began tracking data in 1991. Weekly album sales volume has been below 5 million for the past 12 consecutive weeks. The 5 million mark has only been surpassed in five weeksthis year. To compare, a year ago at this point, there were 21 weeks where sales exceeded 5 million.

Weekly volume didn't fall below 5 million in the SoundScan era until 2010, when, in the week ending May 30, album sales dropped to 4.9 million.

Next week's Billboard 200 competes with the same week in 2013 when: Jay Z's "Magna Carta … Holy Grail" spent a second week at No. 1, selling 129,000 copies (down 76 percent). Sara Bareilles' "The Blessed Unrest" started at No. 2 with 68,000.

Sales are horrible, but Sia getting to #1 makes it all worth it.

Sia is now the second Australian female to get a #1 album, and first since Olivia Newton-John in 1975.

Sia this week becomes the first female Australian artist to land a #1 album on The Billboard 200 since Olivia Newton-John scored a pair of #1 albums in 1974-1975. Sia, who has a current hit single with “Chandelier,” achieves the feat with her sixth studio album, 1000 Forms Of Fear. Newton-John topped the chart with back-to-back studio albums, If You Love Me, Let Me Know and Have You Never Been Mellow. (Newton-John was born in England, but moved to Australia when she was six and is most often associated with that country).

Sia (full name: Sia Furler) was born in December 1975, exactly nine months after Newton-John reached #1 with Have You Never Been Mellow. I’m not saying that Sia’s parents conceived her while listening to that album, but it’s a distinct possibility.

Another female Aussie, Iggy Azalea, debuted and peaked at #3 with her current album, The New Classic. Over the years, two other female Australian artists have cracked the top five: Helen Reddy (whose Helen Reddy’s Greatest Hits reached #5 in January 1976) and Kylie Minogue (whose Fever debuted and peaked at #3 in March 2002).

Alas, Sia’s album sold just 52K copies this week. Since 1991, when Nielsen SoundScan began tracking music sales, just two other albums have debuted at #1 with sales of less than 65K. Cake's Showroom Of Compassion debuted at #1 in January 2011 with sales of 44K. Amos Lee's Mission Bell debuted on top two weeks later with sales of just 40K.

(I guess you could say that Sia has just demonstrated a “1001st Form Of Fear”—that you’ll debut at #1 and have your achievement picked apart because the sales tally is weak for a #1 album!)

It’s not really fair to diminish Sia’s achievement. It’s not her fault that sales are down or that nothing else is happening right now. And this is a breakthrough moment for her. Fear isn’t just her first #1 album, or even her first top 10, but her first to crack the top 20. Her previous highest-charting album was Some People Have Real Problems, which debuted and peaked at #26 in January 2008 (with weekly sales of 20K).

The reason for Sia’s current breakthrough is her dramatic hit single “Chandelier,” which ranked #17 on last week’s Hot 100 and seems headed for the top 10. It’s Sia’s first Hot 100 hit as a lead artist. She cracked the top 10 twice in 2011 as the featured artist on David Guetta's “Titanium” and Flo Rida's “Wild Ones.”

Sia co-wrote those two hits, as she did on “Chandelier.” She has written or co-written 10 Hot 100 singles since 2011, including Rihanna's #1 smash “Diamonds” and Ne-Yo's masterful top 10 hit “Let Me Love You (Until You Learn To Love Yourself).”

Here are quick summaries of this week’s other top chart stories.

Ed Sheeran'sx, which debuted at #1 two weeks ago, drops from #2 to #4 (35K). The album holds tight at #1 on the U.K.’s Official Albums Chart for the third straight week.

Judas Priest lands its first 10 album, a mere 40 years after the release of its debut album, Rocka Rolla. The heavy metal band achieves the breakthrough with Redeemer Of Souls, which debuts at #6 (33K). It’s the band’s 17th studio album; its first since 2008’s Nostradamus, which peaked at #11. The band first cracked the top 20 in October 1982 with Screaming For Vengeance.

Miranda Lambert’s Platinum drops from #7 to #9 (20K). The album logs its fifth week at #1 on Top Country Albums. The album has spent more weeks atop the country chart than any other album so far this year. It surpasses Luke Bryan's Crash My Party, which spent four weeks at #1 in 2014.

Speaking of Crash My Party, the album tops the 2 million mark in sales in this, its 48th week. It’s the country hunk’s second studio album in a row to top 2 million. Tailgates & Tanlines also achieved the feat, though it took nearly twice as long (93 weeks) to hit the 2 million mark.

Here’s some bad news: Overall album sales in the past week (ending July 13) totaled 4.1 million units. That’s the lowest weekly sum in the Nielsen SoundScan era. Weekly sales volume didn’t slip below 5 million until May 2010, when sales dipped to 4.9 million. How long will it be before weekly sales slip below 4 million? Place your bets.

Coming Attractions: Four albums appear headed for top five debuts next week, each with sales in the 50K to 60K range: Jason Mraz's Yes!, Kidz Bop Kids'sKidz Bop 26, Weird Al Yankovic'sMandatory Funand Rise Against's The Black Market. In two weeks, 5 Seconds of Summer's first full-length album will debut at #1 with sales north of 200K.
