I think Tom Petty n the Heartbreakers career is underrated. I know they're in the HoF but they continue to have good success years after they're prime

www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/6205527/eric-clapton-shawn-mendes-billboard-200-previewEric Clapton, Shawn Mendes Aiming for Top Five Debuts on Billboard 200By Keith Caulfield | August 01, 2014 8:00 PM EDT The legendary guitarist is heading for his 14th top 10 album, while YouTube phenom Mendes’ debut is set for a handsome bow. Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Eric Clapton is aiming for his 14th top 10 album on the Billboard 200, as The Breeze: An Appreciation of JJ Cale, should debut in the top five of the chart next week. Industry sources suggest the star-studded tribute set will sell around 50,000 copies by the end of the tracking week on Sunday, Aug. 3. The album was released on July 29 on Clapton's own Bushbranch label, through Surfdog Records. (It is distributed by Warner Music’s independent distribution arm, Alternative Distribution Alliance.) One of the guests on Clapton’s album, Tom Petty, looks like he’ll block Clapton from the top slot on the Billboard 200. Petty’s own new album with his band the Heartbreakers, Hypnotic Eye, is set to debut at No. 1 next week with around 100,000 sold. It will mark the act's first No. 1 album after nearly 37 years on the chart. A significant chunk of Petty’s debut sales week will come from a successful album/concert ticket bundle offer. Petty’s last album, 2010's Mojo, was also supported by a similar promotion, which helped it sell 125,000 copies in its first week, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Also on tap for top 10 debut next week is Shawn Mendes' self-titled debut EP, which might move around 45,000. Mendes recently debuted and (so far) peaked at No. 24 on the Billboard Hot 100 with the EP's single "Life Of the Party." Rock band Theory Of a Deadman could also nab its second top 10 album, as Savages could sell around 25,000 in its debut frame. The group tallied its first top 10 set with its last release, 2011’s The Truth Is…, which debuted and peaked at No. 8. On SoundScan's Building chart (below), Petty’s likely No. 1 is at No. 3, behind Mendes at No. 1 and the current Billboard 200 chart champ, 5 Seconds of Summer’s self titled album (No. 2). Petty’s Hypnotic Eye is behind Mendes and 5 Seconds of Summer because the Building chart does not factor in Hypnotic Eye's sales from Petty’s concert ticket/album offer. Those sales, however, will be included in the final, official Billboard 200 chart. As for the rest of the Building chart’s top 10, Clapton is No. 4, followed by Theory Of a Deadman at No. 5 and Sam Smith’s In the Lonely Hour at No. 6. PARTYNEXTDOOR’s new album PARTYNEXTDOOR TWO is No. 7, while the soundtrack to Frozen is No. 8 and Jenny Lewis’ new Voyager set is No. 9. Both PARTYNEXTDOOR and Lewis may not finish the week in the top 10 of the Billboard 200, as each could sell around 15,000. Rounding out the Building chart’s top 10 is Ed Sheeran’s x at No. 10. NIELSEN SOUNDSCAN BUILDING CHART Rank LW BB 200 Artist Title 1 NEW Shawn Mendes Shawn Mendes EP 2 1 5 Seconds of Summer 5 Seconds of Summer 3 NEW Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers Hypnotic Eye 4 NEW Eric Clapton & Friends The Breeze: An Appreciation of JJ Cale 5 NEW Theory Of a Deadman Savages 6 4 Sam Smith In the Lonely Hour 7 NEW PARTYNEXTDOOR PARTYNEXTDOOR TWO 8 2 Soundtrack Frozen 9 NEW Jenny Lewis Voyager 10 10 Ed Sheeran x The Building Chart reflects the first four days (Monday through Thursday) of SoundScan's tracking week (which ends Sunday) as reported by six major merchants: iTunes, Trans World Entertainment, Best Buy, Starbucks, Target and Anderson Merchandisers. Billboard estimates that they make up about 85% of all U.S. album sales.

I think Tom Petty n the Heartbreakers career is underrated. I know they're in the HoF but they continue to have good success years after they're prime Yeah they have definitely held up better than expected. It is amazing to think how long and how many changes in the music industry have happened since they debuted. I have been to several of their concerts and they are always amazing-you see people in their 50-60s and people who are probably 14-15 all singing the words to the same songs.

I didn't realize Petty's album had the promo (only via shows sold via Ticketmaster, it looks) like the last album.

I didn't realize Petty's album had the promo (only via shows sold via Ticketmaster, it looks) like the last album. I'm actually going to a Tom Petty concert but didn't receive any promo for the new album. it's probably because I had to purchase directly from the box office (needed accessible seats for a guest). That's bad that it's only through ticketmaster.

Great for Tom Petty! Nice mention on HITS page:
EYE HAS IT: The HITS Top 50 Albums Chart is final, boys and girls, and as we boldly predicted, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers have snagged the first #1 of the band’s (or Petty’s) 38-year recording career, one notch ahead of Eric Clapton. What year is this, anyway, 1979?

*NSYNC's social media "outrage" at not being told a compliation album was being released work amazingly well. So much so that Amazon ran out in first day. That's a pretty high placement for "Essential" series - who'd have thought it would be *NSYNC.

As far as I know, just a few Essential albums have reached the top 40 on the Billboard 200 before this week: Billy Joel and Barbra Streisand both peaked at No. 15, and Johnny Cash at No. 16. Not sure if there are any others. Elvis Presley's topped out at 42.
Of course, Michael Jackson's reached No. 2 on Comprehensive Albums after his passing. There have been albums re-released with that title (i.e. Aerosmith's O Yeah! Ultimate Aerosmith Hits- but that reissue didn't go higher than the album did in its initial release).
One album that never cracked the Billboard 200, that is certified platinum (for shipments of 500,000+) is Thew Essential Heart- that logged one week in the catalog top 50.

I'll take a quick look and get back to you Edit: Didn't realize this, but it debuted at #1 and never left. For 34 weeks. The previous #1 was Catching Fire, the chart week dated December 7.

I'll confine this to the top 20 (top 40) is a bigger list
Celine Dion (8) Bruce Springsteen (14) Barbra Streisand (15) Billy Joel (15) Hank William Jr (16)
Michael Jackson (2)
These are the albums with the word "essential" in the title
In the case of Celine Dion and Hank Williams Jr these were "Essential Collection" albums

Gary- I was referring to Sony's The Essential series, rather than albums that had the word "essential" in the title. You may have realized that, though. Bruce Springsteen's was part of that series, but not Dion and Williams. Maybe Sony hasn't done one for Dion, given 2008's My Love collection.
