If this does indeed peak at #2 on Billboard, then this will be a peak that won't accurately reflect the popularity of the song. "Drinking Class" has outsold "Sun Daze", "Lonely Tonight", "Ain't Worth The Whiskey", "Mean To Me" and "Just Gettin' Started". Now grant it granted, it has had more weeks on the chart then most of those songs, but still, this one has consistently sold well throughout it's chart run, and Lee is even coming off a Single Of The Year award at the same time this song is peaking. That's just it, though--a song's sales performance isn't linear when compared to its trajectory at radio. Singles that chart longer tend to sell better, but does that really mean it was a bigger hit than a song that flew to #1 in 15-20 weeks? I'd argue against that notion, simply because artists like Blake, Jason, FGL, and even Cole have sold way more albums than Lee has, which means that fewer people needed to buy a song like "Sun Daze" or "Lonely Tonight" as a standalone single...because they already purchased it when they bought the full album. "Drinking Class" has certainly sold well, I'm definitely not arguing that. But if a song like "Sun Daze", "Lonely Tonight", or, for a more recent example, "Homegrown", had been on the radio charts for 35+ weeks, you can bet they'd all be pushing past 1 million sold. "Drinking Class" has been able to benefit from more and more repeated exposure than songs that have a quick (20 weeks or fewer) run up the charts. Also, I'm not convinced that "Drinking Class" is being 'hurt' by Curb Records here. Sure, it had a slower run through the top 10 and it took a bit longer to catch on, but lately it's shown a pretty high burn rate, so it makes sense that Curb needed to do a big push just to get a MB #1 here. This song has been out for so long that radio is tired of it and ready to move on, but that's not exactly the case for other songs in the top 10. According to the most recent Mediabase callout, Lee has a burn rate of greater than 12% (one of the highest for any currently-charting song). The next highest for a top 10 song is Dierks with around 10% (but this is the first time he's been above 10%). "Homegrown" and "Smoke", two singles that are much younger, have burn rates of less than 6%. The burn rate for "Take Your Time" is only around 7% yet. Also, Lee's net positive is only 43.7%, which is the lowest of any song currently in the top 10. I didn't break it down by demos, but Lee's negative callout percentage is about 10% higher than all the other songs in the top 10 (or even top 20). In the end, I think a #1 MB / #2 BB peak is really good for a slightly-polarizing song like "Drinking Class". This one is going to fall really, really hard next week, though, I'm sure of it.

Well forgive me for making at least one more post in this song's thread but "Drinking Class" lost 2159 spins and nearly 16.0 million in audience this week, falling all the way to #17 on MB (1-7-17).

Wow! Another #2 peaking song becomes the year end #1 on Billboard Country Airplay! Well I think honestly it's only the second time it's happened because the only other song I remember to do it was "Time Is Love" by Josh Turner. This is Lee's 2nd year end #1!
