Mark G.'s Top 20 - August 28th, 2014Enrique Iglesias lands his second #1 on my chart as "Bailando" ascends 2-1 in its second week on my chart (after an astonishing #2, so close to #1 debut last week). He previously spent 2 weeks at #1 in February 2011 with "Tonight (I'm Loving You)" featuring Ludacris and DJ Frank E. "Bailando" is the first #1 for any of the featured acts and it is also noteworthy that this is the first ever Spanish #1 on my chart ever (I listened to both the Spanish and English version, but I'm feeling like I prefer the Spanish version because the words and flow sound better plus because Sean Paul gets kinda annoying in the English version lol). The song increases by 48% in points to 185k, marking the 8th biggest peak weekly point total for a song this year (meaning there were 7 songs whose highest weekly point totals were higher, meaning that a song counted once even if it got more than 185k points on multiple occasions this year). Meanwhile Meghan Trainor's booty-and-empowerment-anthem "All About That Bass" climbs 4-2 in its 3rd week on the chart. It had debuted at #7 two weeks ago. It jumps by 62% to 178k points, just missing the #1 spot this week. But it could still get to #1 in the future, stay tuned... Nico and Vinz's 4-week champion "Am I Wrong" falls 1-3 this week, although it increases by 9% in points. Each of its four weeks at #1 had four separate runs at #1. Daft Punk's "Get Lucky" was the only other song to ever do this. In fact, no other song had ever even had 3 separate single-week runs at #1 (May 9, June 6, July 4, and August 15, all in 2013 obviously). Several songs had 2 weeks at #1 with a gap between them but only the two aforementioned songs had had 3 or more weeks at #1 with a gap between each one. Ariana Grande and Zedd each score their second top 5 on my chart as "Break Free" charges 10-4 and concurrently dethrones Disclosure's "Latch" on EDM Songs after the latter had led for 8 consecutive weeks. Grande has previously spent 2 weeks at #1 in May and June with "Problem" and "Break Free" matches Zedd's highest peak to date and will likely pass it next week ("Clarity" reached #4 in August 2013, just over a year ago! Fun fact: it was the same week that the aforementioned "Get Lucky" made its 4th return to #1). Taylor Swift scores her third top five as her new catchy "Shake It Off" powers 12-5 in its second week. It rises 606% in points (I think the biggest percentage increase for any song since "Maps" increased 1022% the week in June when it jumped 15-1 in its second week, which is the record for the biggest jump to #1 on my chart) As you know, this song debuted at #1 on the Hot 100 this week and will likely stay at #1 next week and by then it could reach #1 on my chart too. Stay tuned... "Rude" by Magic! and "Maps" by Maroon 5 fall out of the top five this week as they fall 3-6 and 5-7, respectively. They each spent 2 weeks at #1. Sia's "Chandelier" rebounds 9-8, Disclosure's "Latch" featuring Sam Smith falls 8-10 in its 16th week and also falls 1-2 on EDM Songs after being on top the last 8 weeks, as mentioned earlier. Iggy Azalea scores her third top ten (second one with her being the lead artist) and Rita Ora her first as "Black Widow" zips 17-9 in its 3rd week on the chart (I actually listened to it this week, hence why it jumped into the top ten xD). Also, BW enables Iggy to replace herself atop Rap/Hip-Hop Songs as it dethrones "Fancy", halting the latter's 17-week reign on top. In other news, I once again make an exception to my 15-week recurrent rule allowing "Rather Be" re-enter my chart even though it had already gone recurrent because I feel like it can grow again (and it is almost sure to go back to the top ten this week for the first time since April) I broke the recurrent rule a few months ago when I allowed "Wake Me Up" to re-enter because even though it just barely couldn't hang on that one week in March I felt like its run just wasn't over quite yet; and I was right, it spent 5 or 6 more weeks in the 14-20 range. Anyway, I have a feeling that this time around, RB may possibly surpass its peak of #8 from its first two weeks on the chart. Still a bit more to talk about! "Bang Bang" jumps 18-12 following it's video premiere and passes the #17 peak of "Domino" making BB her highest peaking song to date ("Price Tag" never entered my chart, and I liked "Domino" but for some reason I couldn't get it to go any higher I guess because I was busy with other songs that I really liked at the time lol). "Fancy" by Iggy Azalea had spent its first 17 weeks on the chart in the top ten and it looks like that has come to a halt as it falls 6-13 this week. "Happy" by Pharrell Williams rules R&B Songs for an 18th week. It had given up the top spot for one week to "Not A Bad Thing" and "Problem" reigned for 14 consecutive weeks. The other. 18 weeks of the chart run of "Happy" were spent atop R&B songs. I believe this is the longest ever reign on that chart for any song. For some reason "Problem" has recently started burning out on me super fast and is hence falling hard. This could be its last week on the chart. This is likely the last week on the chart for "All of Me", despite it rebounding 20-18 in its 28th week. However, it had a great run (even though it missed the #1 spot due to the massiveness of "Happy") and it ties "Glad You Came" for the third longest chart run among songs that did not peak at #1 (GYC spent 3 weeks at #3 in spring 2012) behind "The Motto" and "Demons" which both peaked at #2 and spent 34 and 42 weeks on my chart, respectively. "Counting Stars" just refuses to go as it is now 5 weeks away from tying the record of Imagine Dragons' "Radioactive". This is its 54th week on my chart. It will probably still be on this coming week but it can drop out any week now. Will it pass "Radioactive"? Stay tuned... Sam Smith's "Stay With Me" falls out of the chart from its peak of #14 this week. @smirjal Mr. Thonk Eyes surfy Daniel Collins Zeebz Billie

The longest running songs on my chart to date (only songs that debuted on my chart on or after the week I started doing my chart, December 30th, 2010; thus LTYWL and Dynamite are not eligible):
1. Radioactive - Imagine Dragons (59 weeks) 2. Counting Stars - OneRepublic (54 weeks) 3. Get Lucky - Daft Punk (48 weeks) 4. Ni**as in Paris - Jay-Z & Kanye West (46 weeks) 5. Party Rock Anthem - LMFAO ft. GoonRock & Lauren Bennett (45 weeks) 6. Thrift Shop - Macklemore & Ryan Lewis ft. Wanz (42 weeks) (record most weeks at #1, 15) 6. Demons - Imagine Dragons (42 weeks; only song on this list that did not reach #1) 8. Give Me Everything - Pitbull ft. Ne-Yo, Afrojack & Nayer (41 weeks)
9. Love the Way You Lie - Eminem ft. Rihanna (40 weeks) 9. E.T. - Katy Perry ft. Kanye West (38 weeks)
10. Dynamite - Taio Cruz (36 weeks) 10. Wake Me Up - Avicii (36 weeks)
Counting Stars is the only song on this list that is still alive on my chart. Happy may or may not make this list in 4 weeks' time.

Mark G.'s Top 20 - September 18th, 2014Ariana Grande scores her second #1 on my chart and Zedd his first. "Break Free" surges by 57% to 155k points joining Problem (which zooms 17-5 this week, I'll explain in a bit) as the second #1 for Ariana. Meanwhile, Zedd scored his first top three (September 11, when BF jumped 4-2) as well as his first #1. Zedd previously peaked at #4 with "Clarity" in August 2013 and at #12 with "Stay the Night" in October 2013. "Break Free" notches a 4th straight week atop EDM Songs. In a very close race yet again, Meghan Trainor marches right behind Ariana and Zedd with "All About That Bass", returning to #2 with a 55% increase in points after spending the last two weeks at #3 (it was blocked from the top spot three weeks ago by "Bailando", 9-13). "Break Free" leads by a meager 4% in point. Truly a nail-biter! This coming week is Meghan's golden opportunity to reach that #1 peak as I listened to it a lot on the radio in my office (at the new co-op job I got, finally, yay!!! )! However, Taylor Swift is making a comeback as well. "Shake It Off" falls 1-3 after spending the last two weeks at the top of my chart (jumping 5-1 the week of September 4). SIO became Taylor's first #1 on my chart (a truly amazing achievement, 5 years ago I would NEVER have thought a song from her would be my favorite, and here we are). SIO increases by 2.8% in point. I hear it a lot on the radio as well (no surprise) and it has a chance to make a comeback in these coming weeks! Stay tuned... "Rather Be" by Clean Bandit and Jess Glyne is now a first-timer for multiple achievements! I broke my 15-week recurrent rule with this one, as I saw that it had potential for smashing now that it's smashing in Canada/USA. It is the first time to reach a new peak after going recurrent (it reached a new peak of #7 two weeks ago, after debuting/spending its first two weeks at #8 in April). I believe it is also the slowest ascent to the top five of any song ever, jumping 6-4 in its 19th week on the chart with a 61.4% increase in points. Truly astonishing that this song is regaining its momentum and could possibly become the second longest climb to #1 ever (Radioactive reached #1 in its 34th week on the chart following a sudden resurgence and having reached #2 four months earlier) and the first song ever to reach #1 after going recurrent! Stay tuned... Ariana Grande and Iggy Azalea zoom 17-5 with "Problem" in its 20th week with a 6400% increase on my chart and tops R&B Songs for a 15th cumulative week. I started to listen to it quite a bit this week. I expected it to return to the top ten but not the top five. It should fall this week. (more of this "article" to come when I have the chance) Maroon 5's "Maps" ascends 7-6 in its 14th week on my chart and 13th consecutive week in my top 10. It's going to have a very high position in my Top 25 Songs of Summer 2014 (Q3) chart (coming very soon...) and a pretty high position on my Year-End Top 50 of 2014 chart (coming around Christmas time). Iggy Azalea and Charli XCX jump 10-7 with "Fancy" and the song reclaims the throne from Iggy's other song on Hip-Hop/Rap songs and reigns for an 18th week on that chart. It should also start dropping rapidly like "Problem". "Bang Bang" by Jessie J, Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj holds at #8 in its 5th week on my chart. It is Jessie's first top ten, Ariana's third, and Nicki's 12th(?). It is vying to become Jessie J's first top five, Ariana's second, and Nicki's 9th(?). Magic's "Rude" falls 5-9 in its 19th week on my chart. See description for "Maps". Ed Sheeran's "Don't" becomes his second top ten single on my chart. The song zooms 19-10 in its 5th week. (I can kinda relate to this song.) Ed previously reached #2 with "Sing" (a whopping 225k points that week, but it was just unlucky enough to get blocked nevertheless...very unfortunate!) "Habits", "Life of the Party", and "I'm Not the Only One" debut on my chart this week, following radio airplay on the station I was tuned into in my office that day. Also "Chandelier re-enters at #18 after dropping off from #10 the week before. "Cool Kids" re-entered my chart at #12 last week and fell back off this week. It will likely return this coming week. "Love Runs Out" fell out last week from #12 after 16 weeks on my chart and a peak of #3. This week, our two long-running champions have finally ended their lengthy journey. "Happy" falls from #15 after 35 weeks on the chart, just barely missing the list of ten longest-running songs on my chart. "Counting Stars" falls out from #18, ending a 56-week run on the chart. CS falls just 3 weeks shy of the record held by "Radioactive" for the longest run on my chart. CS was just the second song to reach one full year on my chart ("Radioactive" remains the only one to sit on the chart for 52 consecutive weeks). Both songs will be greatly missed, but all good things must eventually come to an end in order to make room for other good things. I wonder if any song will ever reach 60 weeks on the chart...I was sure "Radioactive" would do it. I guess we will have to wait... Mr. Thonk Eyes @smirjal Daniel Collins surfy Zeebz

Mark G.'s Top 20 - September 25th, 2014
Gonna try to keep it short this time. Meghan Trainor finally reaches the top spot on my chart with "All About That Bass" which climbs 2-1 in its 7th week with a 15% increase to 171k points. Meghan Trainor becomes the 20th act to have its breakthrough US/Canada single to reach #1 (note that it must be their first song, hence songs like Suit and Tie and some of my first number ones in 2011 are not eligible for this, even though they were the first songs from that particular artist to be on my chart officially). The anthem for appreciating your body is well on its way to being in the top 25 of my year-end chart at least. Taylor Swift rebounds 3-2 in its 6th week on my chart after having spent 2 weeks at #1 earlier this month. It jumps by 30% to 144k points. It could come back to number one. "Rather Be" by Clean Bandit and Jess Glyne climbs 4-3 reaching a new peak yet again! It rises by 59% to 113k in its 20th week; TS is the first time the song gets over 100k in a week. This is the first time ever that a song has had so many consecutive bullets/climbs after so many weeks on my chart. It's vying to become the second-longest climber to #1 ever, as well as the first song to reach #1 after having gone recurrent! The song dethrones "Break Free" on EDM Songs, sitting atop that chart for the first time since April! This may very well be a record never to be broken for the biggest gap between two weeks at #1 on a genre chart for a song! Ed Sheeran's "Don't" jumps 10-4 with a 124% increase to 105k points, giving him his second top five hit on my chart. I can somewhat relate to this song, hence I like it so much. It returns to the summit of R&B Songs for a second week. Could it do what "Sing" barely failed to do (having gotten a hefty 225k points that week) - that is, reach #1? "Bang Bang" by Jessie J, Ariana Grande & Nicki Minaj climbs 8-5, giving Jessie her first top five hit on my chart. She previously reached #17 with "Domino" (I really liked that song and I'm sad it couldn't go higher than that). It's Ariana's third top 5 and Nicki's 9th(?). The song increased 75.5% to 93k points this week. This may be the highest it will ever get, but we will see. Maroon 5's "Maps" holds at #6 in its 15th week (of which only the first one was not in the top ten, impressive! I did not expect this much longevity from this song). It peaked at #1 for two weeks (and holds the record for the biggest jump to #1, 15-1. It was the band's 4th number one on my chart. "Break Free" by Ariana Grande and Zedd takes an unexpected tumble. It falls 1-7, making tied with Flo Rida's "Whistle" for the second biggest single-week drop from #1. Ylvis's "The Fox" fell to #12 the week after it climbed to #1 in October/November 2013 (that song fell off the chart the following week, dropping off just two weeks after being #1, amazing lol). Break Free might return to the top five this coming week. The song falls off the throne of EDM Songs after spending the last four weeks on top. Nico & Vinz's four-week #1 hit "Am I Wrong" returns to the top 10, rebounding 11-8. It is likely to be in the year-end top ten. I still love this song. Iggy Azalea and Rita Ora return to the top ten with "Black Widow" (12-9). The song returns to the top of Hip-Hop/Rap Songs for a fourth cumulative week. The song peaked at #4 two weeks ago. Magic!'s debut single and two-week chart-topper "Rude" falls 9-10 in its 20th week on my chart. The song spends a 16th week atop Alternative Songs - the second-longest reign after Imagine Dragons' "Radioactive", which was #1 for 20 or 21 weeks spanning from May 2013 to May 2014 (more than a year apart). Echosmith's "Cool Kids", another relatable song, re-enters my chart at a new peak of #11. It will likely jump into the top ten this coming week. "Habits (Stay High)" by Tove Lo climbs 15-12 in its second week on my chart. It will also likely jump into my top ten this coming week. "Sing" by Ed Sheeran re-enters my chart at #17. I broke the recurrent rule again because I feel like this song has a chance to spend a few more weeks and it's gaining in points. "Fancy" and "Problem plummet 7-18 and 5-15, respectively. Told you so. They might rebound this coming week though. Sam Smith's "I'm Not the Only One" and Calvin Harris's "Summer" fall off my chart this week. After 15 weeks on my chart, the latter officially goes recurrent.

Mark G.'s Top 20 - October 2nd, 2014
Meghan Trainor holds at #1 for a second-week with her self-confidence anthem "All About That Bass" in this mega-points week, with a 21% upstick to 209k points, which is more points than any song got in a week since Fancy got 217k points in its 5th and last week at #1 back in June. I had a chance to listen to music a lot this week, which enabled not only the first 200k point week for a song in a while, but also nearly the entire top ten having over 100k points! Obviously this resulted in point increases for most songs. AATB keeps at #1, fending off "Rather Be" which climbs 3-2 in its 21st total week on my chart. The song reaches a new peak yet again, after such a long time on my chart (from before it debuted on the Hot 100 and when I liked it but not as much). The song jumps 53% to 173k points. Obviously this is the most points the song ever got in a single week. RB holds atop Dance/Electronic Songs for a third total week (including one back in April when it first debuted). Will it complete its ever so slow climb to the top? Tove Lo vaults 9-3 with "Habits (Stay High)". This multi-format smash increases by 410% to 158k points in just its third week on my chart. "Habits", her first chart entry, thus also becomes her first top five single. The song tops Alternative Songs for the first time, dethroning "Rude" which had reigned on that chart for the last 16 consecutive weeks. Ed Sheeran's "Don't" bullets at its peak to date of #4 with a 42% increase to 149k points. It tops R&B Songs for a third week. It is Ed's second top five, vying to become his first #1... Iggy Azalea's "Black Widow" ft. Rita Ora continues to rebound as it jumps 9-5 with a 112% increase to 146k points after peaking at #4 (so far) three weeks ago. The song holds atop Hip-Hop/Rap Songs for a fifth total week. Echosmith's "Cool Kids" jumps 11-6, giving the band their first top ten hit. The song got jumped by "Habits (Stay High)" just as it was about to top Alternative Songs, and thus holds 2-2 on that chart as "Rude" falls 1-3. :( Taylor Swift's "Shake It Off" takes quite a tumble, dropping 2-7 so soon. But if you look on the bright side, it was her first and well-deserved #1 on my chart. It should be able to stay in the top ten for some time. Ariana Grande and Zedd's "Break Free" slips 7-8. I think this song might be burning out on me now... Nico and Vinz's "Am I Wrong" slips 8-9. It will likely be in my year-end top ten. Jessie J's "Bang Bang" featuring Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj falls 5-10. It was the first top five for Jessie, Ariana's third, and Nicki's ninth(?). By the way, I forgot to mention that Ariana became the only artist 2 weeks ago to have three songs in the top ten simultaneously! Iggy Azalea was really close to doing it but BW just couldn't co-ordinate with the two older songs of Iggy's from earlier this year and Drake was really close in early 2012 but Headlines was jumped by Party Rock Anthem that week (which had been on for a really long time already) so Headlines ended up at #11 and didn't join TC and TM in the top ten. :( Maroon 5's "Maps" tumbles 6-11; this is the first week since June that the song is not in the top ten. Magic!'s "Rude" drops 10-13, likewise exiting the top ten. Sam Smith's "I'm Not the Only One" re-enters my chart at a new peak of #19, kicking Shawn Mendes' "Life of the Party" out of my chart.

Mark G.'s Top 20 - October 9th, 2014 Iggy Azalea's "Black Widow" featuring Rita Ora jumps 5-1, giving Iggy her third #1 on my chart and Rita's first. Despite a 1% decline to 145k points, the song climbs to the top spot. Thus Iggy Azalea has sent her first three chart entries to number one! She previously reached #1 in May with her own "Fancy" and then as a feature on Ariana Grande's "Problem" the next week. She is the first act to get 3 number ones in the same calendar year. Maroon 5 previously reached #1 with "Moves Like Jagger" (September 2011), "Payphone" (May 2012) and "One More Night" (September 2012), all within one year but not within a calendar year. The song tops Rap/Hip-Hop Songs for a sixth week. Clean Bandit's "Rather Be" featuring Jess Glyne remains at its #2 peak for a second consecutive week in its 22nd week on my chart (that's a lot of 2's) and spends a fourth week atop Dance/Electronic Songs. This could be the most disappointing and closest #2 peak for a song ever :( and I know a lot of fans of the song may hate me now...with an 18% drop to 142k points, the song comes within just 3k points of the top spot. But the longevity factor of this song will definitely help it secure a moderately high position of my year-end chart. Tove Lo's "Habits (Stay High)" holds at its #3 peak for a second week and on top of Alternative Songs for a second week as well with a 13.3% decline to 137k points. It is Tove Lo's first chart entry. Ed Sheeran's "Don't" likewise holds at #4 for a third straight week losing 13.4% of its points to 129k this week. It tops R&B Songs for a fourth week. This is the closest race between the top four that I've had in a while! Meghan Trainor's "All About That Bass" falls 1-5 with a hefty 49.3% loss of points to 106k this week - lost almost half of its points from last week. It spent two consecutive weeks weeks on top of my chart. This is it's first week outside my top 3 since 7 weeks ago when it jumped 7-4 in its 2nd week on my chart. It's also very odd that 1 and 5 switched places this week while 2-4 stayed in their respective positions. An unusual chart event. Taylor Swift's "Shake It Off" reverses course 7-6 after having spent 2 weeks at #1 in September. Jessie J's "Bang Bang" featuring Ariana Grande and Nicki Minaj likewise rebounds 10-7. It has so far peaked at #5. It has potential to reach anew peak this coming week... Nico and Vinz's "Am I Wrong" also rebounds 9-8 having spent 4 weeks at #1 spanning from beginning of July to mid/end of August. One of this week's two major chart oddities is Ed Sheeran's "Sing" returning to the top ten (17-9) and being there for the first time since the beginning of June. This song was stuck in my head for a few days this week especially when I was at work. I knew it had potential when I allowed it to re enter after it went recurrent too bad it didn't get a #1 though :( Magic's "Rude" somehow makes it back to the top 10 in its 22nd week on the chart (13-10) yet Ariana Grande and Zedd's "Break Free" falls out 8-11. This should also be normalized next week. The other oddity this week is one that can be explained. In honor of Bruno Mars's birthday last week, "Young Girls" re-entered my chart at #14. It peaked at #3, making it his 8th and most recent top 5 hit (it would've been 11 had my chart officially began in 2010 as Nothin' On You and Grenade would have probably peaked at #3 and Just the Way You Are would've probably peaked at #4). Locked Out of Heaven, Grenade and Treasure would've also re entered my chart but they could not as they are recurrents. After hearing them a jewelry store (where I was buying birthday gifts for my mom) and grocery store, respectively, alternative smashes "A Sky Full of Stars" by Coldplay and "Bad Blood" by Bastille enter my chart for the first time. It is the second chart entry for each band. It is the highest-peaking single for Coldplay (though the previous one, "Magic", which was on my chart for one week at #19 in May, got more points the week it was on my chart, 15k). Bastille previously peaked for two weeks at #4 with "Pompeii" in March and the song spent 21 total weeks on my chart and five weeks atop Alternative Songs. "Chandelier" tumbles off the chart from #12 after 14 weeks on the chart, just one week shy of recurrent status. Sam Smith's fourth chart entry, "I'm Not the Only One", falls off my chart from its #19 peak and "Bailando" falls off from #20, putting it in second place for the second shortest chart run of a #1-peaking song, behind Ylvis's "The Fox" which spent just 6 weeks on my chart and fell off just 3 weeks after being #1 for a week, and I think that's the quickest descent off the chart from #1.
