OMG this song is so clever. I love it when a song has sad or upset lyrics and it has a dance beat.

I wish this had become a runaway worldwide hit. Robyn continues to make some of the best songs to ever grace the airwaves.

The real queen of pop music.
This song is perfect. This video is perfect. The life performances were perfect. Body Talk is perfect.

I absolutely adore this song. It still sounds fresh to this day. It really should have done more.

Fucking epic.
And I love that she's singing from the perspective of a gay man - clever lyrics.

Love this song. There were so many songs from Body Talk that deserved to SMASH. She's releasing radio friendly material way above the level of most of her peers, yet without a fraction of the success. So frustrating.

I love that she's singing from the perspective of a gay man - clever lyrics. See, this is why I enjoy the song-- but even so, it's just a little cringey because cheating is implied and idk, it makes me a tad uneasy. The Kaskade remix of this is absolutely phenomenal though. Better than the original. Of the Body Talk era, 'Don't Fucking Tell Me What To Do' is still my favorite.

Better than the original. Of the Body Talk era, 'Don't f**king Tell Me What To Do' is still my favorite. This song is definitely about cheating. But in contrast to something like Carly Rae Jepsen's "This Kiss", cheating isn't glamourized here. This song is supposed to make you feel uneasy because it constructs an inherently desperate situation in which there can really be no winners. We know that. And from the lyrics, it sounds like she (he) knows it at heart, too. The interpretation is perfect. Robyn's lyrics are always so artfully crafted, and very few artists can pull this off as well as she does. It's hard to strike just the right tone and still allow the listener to sympathize with the narrator. Another one that always leaves me slightly uneasy is "Be Mine!". Various lyrical flourishes like the spoken word bridge imply that the narrator is stalking the object of her affection - along with the eagerness of the exclamation point in the title. It works because it's subtle, and it's real.

Yeah, I agree with @touch, the lyrics have always bothered me a little bit, but I also agree they are well crafted and you have to respect her honesty. I had never heard the interpretation of this being told from the perspective of a gay man, but that makes me like it even better.
There were like three official remixes of this and they all kicked ass. Sultan & Ned, Kaskade, and Feed Me; I believe. Kaskade's was the major stand out.

I always thought this song is singing from the perspective of that "girlfriend" in the title.
It's actually a guideline of how to break up with "me" when "I" know how it's all a lie and it's gonna hurt yet still expect the cheating partner to be the gentle, caring person.

The production is really good. I miss the synthpop trend of late 2000s. I love the Kaskade remix.

It's actually a guideline of how to break up with "me" when "I" know how it's all a lie and it's gonna hurt yet still expect the cheating partner to be the gentle, caring person. I have always said the lyrics are ambiguous enough that all three interpretations are valid. 1.) A girl singing to her boyfriend about how to break up with his girlfriend 2.) A gay man coaching his lover who is coming out how to end it with his girlfriend 3.) The girlfriend herself in what Ty described above

In my mind, it was a non-stop era for two years with hit after hit and its song were everpresent. It was basically what the Teenage Dream era was and I refuse to remember it any other way.

I used to find the lyrics to this a bit off putting, but I'm past that now - it's perfect. The whole Body Talk album sounds as fresh as ever.
