I remember initially I wasn't too into Janet and only had a handful of her songs in my library; this was one of them. I fell in love with it and the rest of her music soon. It's probably one of the best R&B songs, not just of the 90's, but of all time. Perfection.

Excellent track and one of the best in Janet's career. Massive hit on mainstream top 40, rhythmic top 40, and urban contemporary. This got loads of airplay on B96 and WGCI in my market back in the day. Lot of great tracks from the 1993 Janet album with nearly all the singles being played on B96 but "That's the Way Love Goes" is one of the real stand outs. That laid back sound was atypical of the Janet sound coming out of her mega-successful "Rhythm Nation" period (Though the upbeat tracks from Janet like "If", "Because of Love", and "You Want This" aren't that far apart from "Alright" and "Rhythm Nation" in the 1989 Rhtyhm Nation album but updated enough to have its own sound). Highly recommended for fans of 90s R&B or rhythmic pop. The album version is great but I kinda like this version better with the extra piano. www.youtube.com/watch?v=4J7Dp2Jpod8

This debuted at #1 on Billboard's R&B Airplay chart.

Unpopular opinion, but I don't really care for it. It's too chill and laid back for my taste, and though I like Janet and am happy the song was so successful, I never got how it was such a massive hit. I prefer a good number of her other singles over this one.

Pure sex and chill. One of the best songs of the 90s hands down.

This debuted at #1 on Billboard's R&B Airplay chart. Yeah it debuted #1 on R&B and #4 on Top 40 Airplay. The latter is weird, though, because it debuted #29 Top 40/Mainstream and #11 Top 40/Rhythmic. Not sure how those meant #4 overall. Jade's "Don't Walk Away" was higher on both components but not higher on Top 40 Airplay. How did that work?

Lol being chill and laidback is Janet staying true to her style like Sade. Alot of R&B slow jams reflect similar vibes like "That's The Way Love Goes".

It's not in my top 5 Janet songs, but I definitely like it. Despite being laid back, it was definitely a bold move as a lead single. She was at her peak in a lot of ways at this point.
