Another one for me came from "If You're Gonna Play in Texas (You Gotta Have a Fiddle in the Band)" by Alabama: Actual: "A cowboy in the back stood up and yelled, 'Cotton-Eyed Joe'" Heard: "A cowboy in the back stood up and yelled, 'Hot nachos'" I remember for many years having no idea what was said in that part. When I finally heard of "Cotton Eyed Joe", I was like "ah, so that's what he says!"

^ I always knew they were saying "Cotton Eye Joe" since the dance version of "Cotton Eye Joe" is played at nearly every single Sabres game I've been to in my life.

Conway Twitty - Saturday Night Special Heard: "I wasn't goin' to use that bullet in my life." Actual: "I was gonna use that bullet to end my life."
Wow, that adds a whole new dimension to the song for me. Can't believe I missed that.

Right now the only one that comes to mind is "The Other Life" by Shooter Jennings.
I always thought he was saying: "And sing my homies at another long some bar.'' He was actually saying: "And sing my pommies at another long some bar."
I'm sure a lot of people thought he was saying "homies" as well.

I sometimes come up with misheard lyrics on purpose. It's not country, but one of my favorite intentional mondegreens is turning Hall & Oates' "Maneater" into "Watch out boy, she'll lick you up / Whoa oh, here she comes, she's an anteater..."

Joe Nichols - Revelation Actual: "Somewhere in Vietnam a nineteen year old soldier stumbled from a barroom." Heard: "Somewhere in Vietnam a nineteen year old soldier stumbled from a ballroom."
Great song, but that line confused the heck out of me until I looked up the lyrics.

Reba McEntire - Fancy Actual: "Mama died and I ain't been back." Heard: "Mama died in her evening black. Interesting! I always heard that line as something along the lines of "Mama died in a heap in the back"/"Mama died in a heap out back."

Reba McEntire - Fancy Actual: "Mama died and I ain't been back." Heard: "Mama died in her evening black. And I definitely always heard "Mama died in her evening bath." That line is just full of interesting interpretations!

Actual lyric: "I'm gonna put on my it's-all-over-coat" What my mom heard: "I'm gonna put on my hip-sole overcoat"

I've had more than a few doozies. Tanya Tucker - Tell Me About It (with Delbert McClinton) Actual: "I know what you're goin' through, I graduated from that school too." Heard: "I know what you're goin' through, I graduated from night school too." Yikes, I still think you're right about this one. Looked it up on 4 sites, they all say "that school" -- but I'm still not convinced. It's my favorite Tanya song and I refuse to give up "night school." I guess I'll listen to it a few times but I am very stubborn.

I guess I'll listen to it a few times but I am very stubborn. Lyrics sites aren't necessarily right. It's not uncommon for the first site to get it wrong, and all the others to copy it. The most reliable confirmation method would be to look at the lyrics in the liner notes of the album, but even that's not 100% foolproof because there's no way to know who transcribed them. That being said, I just listened to the song again. When Delbert sings the line, it's extremely ambiguous. However, when Tanya sings it around the 2:33 mark, it clearly sounds like "that school" to me. www.youtube.com/watch?v=uQwjeMqYmZI

I always had trouble understanding some of the lyrics to "Hard Livin'," by Keith Whitley.

In his cover of Kris Kristofferson's "If You Don't Like Hank Williams," Hank Williams Jr. jokingly says "I'm in love with Linda Ronstadt." For the first several times I heard this, I had no idea who Linda Ronsdadt was, so I used to think he said something like "Linda Ron's Dad" and I had no idea what he meant. When I finally learned about Linda Ronstadt I did a major facepalm.

I posted this before in the "Misheard Lyrics" thread of the general section, but for the longest time this is what I heard when listening to Taylor Swift's "Love Story": Heard: "When I met you on the ox cart to town" Actual: "When I met you on the outskirts of town" I thought she was pandering to her country fanbase.

George Strait - "Carried Away"
Actual: "Like feather flying high on a windy day" Heard: "Like a flag flying high on a windy day"
Even though its in my top 10 George songs, when I was a kid for whatever reason I thought it was "Flag" instead of "Feather", which makes way more sense.
