Hate "One Thing", love "Nothing Could Come Between Us". Hey, it's not my fault America always rallies after the weaker song. Oh man I can't believe you hate "One Thing", "I Hate Everything About You", and "Fat Lip". At least you like "Nothing Could Come Between Us" and "How You Remind Me". What about "Wasting My Time", "Help, I'm Alive", "Porn Star Dancing", and "Old Man" lol? Nope, #1 hit, yep, yep.

Damn lol, "Wasting My Time" is probably my favourite of every single Canadian hit we mentioned here with the exception of maybe "I Hate Everything About You" lol. It's a shame Default sank into obscurity outside of Canada shortly after though.

Well now I have a good idea what would be on the bottom of a Mainstream Rock #1s list. (Don't do that it's 34 years long)

274 SAFE AND SOUND Capital Cities #1 for 1 week, 52 weeks on chart [2013]
Yeah, when I first heard this one, I actually didn't mind it. The blaring trumpets, the Human League-esque synths all added up to a dancy, upbeat track that wasn't horrible. But then it got overplayed and rose to the top seven months after it first charted, and continued to stay there for a whole year, tied for the fourth-longest chart run ever on Alternative. And if that wasn't enough, it also had to get overplayed on Pop where it peaked inside the top 10 on the Hot 100 and also on Pop Songs. It's not like overplay killed it though - I found this song to be annoying a few weeks into its run. It sounded pretty unique on Pop, but it wasn't unique in a good way, because it just wasn't all that interesting. Yeah, it has trumpets. So what? Jason Derulo's new song also has them. The lyrics are pretty stupid too - "a hurricane of frowns"? What is this, the Disney Channel? Also, it's pretty hard to pigeon-hole this into a specific genre. It's not exactly a generic pop song, and I also struggle with defining it as indie pop because of the lack of "indie" elements in it. I would suppose synthpop or electropop is the best classification, although in that case I would have loved to see CHVRCHES tear up the charts instead, because "The Mother We Share" was f**king amazing.

Well, it was my #2 song of 2013, so yeah, it definitely shouldn't be this low.

Although it's a bit overrated, I don't think it's a bad #1.
I will say this though, I disliked it for the first 6 months or so that it was out. Then it just clicked for me and I started liking it.

273 THE ADVENTURES OF RAIN DANCE MAGGIE Red Hot Chili Peppers #1 for 4 weeks, 20 weeks on chart [2011]
As far as Red Hot Chili Peppers singles go, this is definitely one of their worst. That's not to say it's a bad song, but unlike the legendary "Can't Stop" or "Otherside", "Rain Dance Maggie" is just plain old uninteresting, even more uninteresting than "Dani California" was. It lacks a good riff, an interesting hook and energetic vocals. I mean, when when Anthony Kiedis sultrily cries, "I want to lick a little bit", it's without the swagger and prowess that sang "what's up? Now suck my dick" twenty years ago. Its biggest crime is being boring, and for that, it's probably the band's worst lead single to date. Then again, it's not like they had much material to choose from - most of I'm With You was trash anyways, and it's hard to find a Chili Peppers album I liked less than it unless it was made in the 80s. I do have to give the boys credit for working the phrase "cock blocking" into an otherwise unimpressive song, though.

It would've been huge in the 80s. I never understood why the sank into obscurity. "Taking My Life Away" was almost as big in Canada on both rock and pop formats as "Wasting My Time" was, but it flopped so hard in the US that it just killed them there. I wonder if Roadrunner just didn't find it worth their while to promote them, but it never made sense to me anyway. I just feel like both TMLA and COM were quality lead singles that warranted top 10 status on active/top 20 on alternative just like "Deny" did after "Wasting My Time" was huge.

Also Green Baron I also found Raindance Maggie to be their weakest ever lead single, although I still like it and listen to it from time to time today.

272 WAY DOWN NOW World Party #1 for 5 weeks, 13 weeks on chart [1990]
Another one of those songs that'll make you proclaim, "How the hell did this reach #1 on Alternative?" Granted, it was released in 1990, and most of the songs that reached the top 5 then are all but forgotten now, for better or worse. World Party apparently had three top ten songs, but ask your average Alternative fan and I doubt he'll be able to recall any of them. "Way Down Now" was their sole #1 on the chart, and honestly, it's pretty forgettable. The vocals are pretty monotonous, the riff fades into the background and doesn't stand out. It's no surprise that no one remembers it today.

Raindance Maggie is one of RCHP's weakest singles. The World Party isn't bad, but nothing amazing.

I'd like to think Rain Dance Maggie is when Anthony Kiedis' songwriting prowess finally imploded.

I really like the bassline in "Raindance Maggie", but the guitar is pretty weak, I would've expected better for Klinghoffer's debut. Like Green Baron said, it's not necessarily a bad track but it's really subpar when it comes to RHCP lead singles.

I think they made Rain Dance Maggie with the purpose of making a "classic bassline", or at least I remember reading that somewhere. Flea's bass is solid, but it's clearly one of the weakest RHCP singles. Don't mind seeing it this low.
Safe and Sound is still suffering from a bit of burnout, but I did enjoy it before it was ridiculously overplayed.

Haven't checked this in a while, but I love everything from "Kinky Afro" up to "Safe and Sound", with the exception of P.O.D., my all-time least favorite alt #1. Favorites of that bunch would be Smash Mouth (summmmer), Happy Mondays (good vibes everywhere), Charlatans, and Capital Cities. All those 4 would be ranked pretty high up my list.
Interesting to see so much of the hits from alternative's college rock years from '88-'93 slagged off so abruptly, but guessing that you hopped on the alternative train in the mid-2000s era, the whole "How did this hit #1?" reaction is understandable if you aren't really knowledgeable on the alternative scene from those days.

I'm 14, so like it or not... I'm growing up into the indie pop era

271 THE REASON Hoobastank #1 for 1 week, 26 weeks on chart [2004]
I'm not going to lie, but I liked this song as a kid. It grew off me a lot, though, but that's not to say it's bad, because it's not. It's just stale and cheesy, but apparently the general public loves stale and cheesy, because it was a huge Pop crossover hit, peaking at #2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and still racking up some decent recurrent airplay ten years later. Frontman Doug Robb says he's not a perfect person, and this song shows it. Most of the lyrics here are pulled straight from the post-breakup lyrical cliche book, and it's not hard to spot which lines those are. "I'm sorry that I hurt you". "I never meant to do those things to you." Boo-f**king-hoo. Yeah, you broke her heart, stop apologizing unless all you're doing is trying to get some makeup sex. Overall, "The Reason" is trite, cliched and cheesy, but still slightly amusing in a way.
