"Booty" by Jennifer Lopez featuring Iggy Azalea or Pitbull is the top new entry on the Billboard Hot 100 at #18. The song is from Lopez’s album, A.K.A., which was widely seen as a flop when it came out in June. (For good reason: It sold just 56K copies in its first six weeks.)
"Booty" has several things going for it.
1. The steamy video has become a viral smash. Billboard reports that 92% of the song’s Hot 100 points came from streaming (and that 96% of its streaming points are from Vevo on YouTube clicks.) (The Hot 100 combines sales, airplay and streaming data.)
2. Female singers are red-hot right now. Females have a lock on the top five for the third consecutive week. That’s the longest period in which men have been completely shut out from the top five since women held down the top five spots for four straight weeks in February/March 1999.
3. Azalea is especially hot. She has had three top five hits so far this year, two of them as a lead artist. One of those, “Black Widow” (featuring Rita Ora), dips from #4 to #5 in its 12th week.
4. Songs about posteriors are having their pop moment. Meghan Trainor's “All About That Bass” holds at #1 for the third week. (It also tops the 2 million mark in digital sales.) Nicki Minaj's “Anaconda,” which borrows heavily from Sir-Mix-A-Lot's 1992 classic “Baby Got Back,” dips from #3 to #4, after peaking at #2.
Continuing on that theme, “Booty” is the second song that begins with the word “booty” to crack the top 20. It follows Destiny’s Child’s “Bootylicious,” which hit #1 in August 2001. Two other “booty songs” have made the top 40. The Ray Charles Orchestra's “Booty Butt” hit #36 in 1971. BLACKstreet's “Booti Call” (that was the spelling) reached #34 in 1994.
"Booty" is the first song from A.K.A. that you could even remotely call a hit. The album’s lead single, “I Luh Ya Papi,” featuring French Montana, stalled at #77. The second, “First Love,” peaked at #87.
Lopez’s pal Pitbull was featured on the original version of “Booty.” But when Azalea became available, Lopez swapped his vocals out and featured Azalea in a commercially-available remix and in the video. (Hey, it’s a business. Azalea is hotter than Pit right now. Also, J.Lo probably surmised that the video possibilities with two beautiful women were greater.)
Still, that phone call had to have been a bit awkward. J.Lo and Pitbull have been frequent collaborators over the years. Pitbull has had a featured credit on J.Lo’s last three top 20 hits. “Booty” follows “On The Floor” (#3 in 2011) and “Dance Again” (#17 in 2012).

Taylor Swift's “Shake It Off” holds at #2 for the second week. The pop smash regains the #1 spot on Hot Digital Songs after being bumped out for two weeks by Trainor's smash. “Shake It Off” sold 294K copies this week, bringing its five-week total to 1,783,000. This is the third week on top of the digital sales chart for “Shake It Off.”
"Bang Bang" by Jessie J, Ariana Grande & Nicki Minaj jumps from #5 to #3 in its eighth week … Sam Smith's “Stay With Me” holds at #6 for the third straight week in its 24th week. The song peaked at #2 … “Break Free” by Ariana Grande featuring Zedd holds at #7 for the second week in its 12th week. It peaked at #4. It’s #1 on Dance/Electronic Songs for a sixth week … Charli XCX's “Boom Clap” jumps from #10 to #8 (a new high point) in its 16th week … Sia's “Chandelier” rebounds from #11 to #9 in its 20th week. The song has climbed as high as #8.
Jeremih lands his third top 10 hit as “Don’t Tell ‘Em” (featuring YG) jumps from #12 to #10 in its 13th week. Jeremih reached #4 with both “Birthday Sex” and “Down On Me” (featuring 50 Cent). “Don’t Tell ‘Em” is from Jeremih’s third studio album, Late Nights: The Album, which is due Oct 7. Impressively, each of his three studio albums has spawned a top 10 hit. “Don’t Tell ‘Em” interpolates Snap's “Rhythm Is A Dancer,” which reached #5 in January 1993.
Maroon 5's “Maps” and MAGIC!'s “Rude” both drop out of the top 10 this week.
Lee Brice's “I Don't Dance” tops the
1 million mark in digital sales this week. The song reached #33 on the Hot 100.
