Are you serious? I saw this title and laughed that maybe it's the Glen Campbell song. I can't believe it actually is! Do people think this will actually do well? I mean, they lack momentum, but it's still The Band Perry.

Eh, something's tellin' me this'll be a place-holder between eras. Don't think this'll actually be sent to radio.

Eh, something's tellin' me this'll be a place-holder between eras. Don't think this'll actually be sent to radio. It is on your desk (radio) next Monday and goes for adds on October 13th, there is a HUGE AD in the latest Billboard Country Update. So ya it is heading to radio.

My initial thoughts are that this is a bad idea, but I guess we'll just have to see.

This rendition is something I've gotta hear; I was in the 10th grade when Glen's version came out in 1967, and I'm very intrigued on how this will sound, coming from a year in which the top three Hot 100 singles of the year were all debut singles, including the country classic 'Ode To Billie Joe' by Bobbie Gentry, which finished right behind 'The Letter' by the Box Tops and right in front of 'To Sir, With Love' by Lulu at #2 for the year.
I have no clue as to how this real country tune will fare at today's country radio, but we'll all know relatively quickly, I would guess.
This release undoubtedly means we'll get a new CD from them next year as opposed to later this year; oh well!

I've heard several covers of this song over the years but they've all reassured me that the song itself just isn't very good. It's just so boring and "there" imo, but I'm intrigued by this choice to say the least. Not really sure what to expect with this going to radio, but I would much rather have all-new material from TBP instead, and I imagine radio/fans in general would respond better to original music as well. But I guess we'll see how this ends up doing.

Why's everyone so hesitant? I think it will sound great and do good! Plus it's not even like a song has to even be good to chart well in country music. Hopefully it will be be as good of a remake as Wagon Wheel was w/ Darius.

Love that song! I hope they do it justice. And anyway, it's not JUST a Glen Campbell song; John Hartford released his own version of it first. (I know this from my dad the John Hartford fanatic. :) )

Given that Big Machine released "Home Sweet Home" from Justin Moore, why wouldn't they too release "Gentle On My Mind" from The Band Perry? It's also a smart play for the label given their partnership with the documentary's soundtrack.

I doubt this song's performance will affect anything for TBP's momentum and I don't see it as a waste if they don't have anything new to release yet in its place. That said, Justin Moore's song is floundering right now, so it's not like a sure bet that this is going to be a smash.

I didn't know this song from its title but once I looked it up, I recognized it as something from an album my parents listened to when I was growing up. I quite like it, and think that it lends itself to the kind of performance from The Band Perry that I prefer -- understated, melodic rather than rhythmic, California country-soft rock over overblown arena rock. If The Band Perry's version becomes a hit, great. If not, I'm still glad that they're lending their voices to the promotion of this project while they're in between album cycles.

It was more about the label promoting a project of theirs -- projects that historically don't get singles -- with an artist on their roster.

My first sentence was just my thoughts on this being released, and that I don't think it will "hurt" them in any way. But since you brought up the Justin Moore song for comparison, I just wanted to point out that his single is floundering so it's not as if promoting these projects through a radio single is guaranteed to be all that beneficial.

They have done this song live in the past with an acoustic slant, not sure if the studio version is the same arrangement or not. TBP has a knack for taking risks and making them pay off, so we'll see what happens. Wouldn't surprise me a bit if they pull off another surprise with this.

I think it makes sense to compare this song's chart run to Life Is A Highway's, and maybe to some of the songs (like T Tritt's version of Take It Easy) from the Eagles tribute album from a long while ago. Top 20 would be reasonable, better would be outstanding. Rascal Flatts' career didn't disappear on them because they covered Highway.
It's a good thing to have some variety on the radio. Mostly radio programming is very safe, but having a well-written if old-fashioned song on the radio a few times a day won't hurt anybody, and will cheer up an old-timer like me. Looking at the lyrics to the new Florida Georgia Line song (that supposedly will be released) makes me nostalgic for strong lyrics like John Hartford's, so I hope this gets 15 weeks worth of airplay.

Looking at the lyrics to the new Florida Georgia Line song (that supposedly will be released) makes me nostalgic for strong lyrics like John Hartford's, so I hope this gets 15 weeks worth of airplay. "Life Is A Highway" got unsolicited airplay though in the beginning then radio jumped on the bandwagon once it was close to the top 30. Plus Lyric Street went ahead and sent out "My Wish" at the same exact time and "Highway" didn't hurt that song's chart run at all since "My Wish" spent multiple weeks at #1 during the Christmas season of 2006. Now I definitely think that Rascal Flatts was at the peak of their popularity back then and country radio was a slightly different animal, so that's a big reason why that worked. This is a risk in the sense of a cover on a tribute album and sending it as an actual radio single, but I do believe this is just a gap between studio albums. They have been working on their third album as we speak as there was an article in Rolling Stone about it a couple months back, so I suspect that it's reasonable to predict a peak 15-25 or so like you mentioned Zazie. There is something to the notion of this potentially being a refreshing sound on 2014 country radio with an old Campbell tune, but I'll hold of on a verdict til I get to hear the studio version of this since production seems to be where promising outcomes go awry.

Another thing about "Life Is A Highway" is that, even though it was never officially released as a single and it 'only' peaked at #18, it's still one of the Flatts' most popular recurrent tunes by far. For me it's one of their only older songs that I ever hear, with the other big one fortunately being my all-time favorite by them, "Fast Cars And Freedom". Occasionally I'll hear "Bless The Broken Road" or "What Hurts The Most" but mostly I just hear "Life Is A Highway" and "Fast Cars And Freedom" when it comes to older RF songs.
"Gentle On My Mind" as an official single from TBP strikes me as a bit of a surprise, albeit it a good one, as I've always liked Glen Campbell's version of the song. I'd liken this situation to the ZBB's release of "All Alright". Obviously AA wasn't a cover song, but since it was from an EP, it served more to bridge the gap between their last album and their upcoming spring 2015 release. Or you could compare it to Keith Urban's "For You". That one also wasn't a cover but it was from a soundtrack.
This situation isn't exactly like those ones but it's similar to all 3 (RF, ZBB, Keith) in some ways, I'd say. Definitely a rare situation any way you look at it.

Yes, this is a bridge between now and the forthcoming third album as TBP stays busy working on it.

I love this song, and am excited for it to be on today's radio. I'm not a big TBP fan but hopefully I enjoy their version of this classic.

Considering that Glen Campbell's version of "Gentle On My Mind" only reached #30 in its initial run in 1967, this might be the only song that charted lower and yet it has become a classic almost 50 years later.
I hope that The Band Perry's version makes it and hopefully will match or beat Campbell's version. It may be the best TBP song that I have heard that shows their country roots. Depends on how it does in the climate we are in now with Florida Georgia Line and others in the bro-country camp.

The Band Perry Gentle on My Mind It is one of the all-time classics in every sense of the word, a breezy ode to unfettered love. If there's any band that can make it their own and keep it as fresh as it was originally, it would be The Band Perry, who bring both respect and energy to it. ct40.com/index.php/freshtracks

This is an interesting take on this song. The production manages to sound both very organic but also quite polished at the same time. It's probably the most enjoyable version of this track I've heard, a song I generally don't care for. Even with this being dressed up in a bit more lively production, you can tell how little the song fluctuates from start-to-finish. Should be interesting to see how this does; I'm not predicting this to be one of their bigger hits, but I don't even know what to expect from this release.

Love this tune , but havent heard the studio version yet. Please tell me she dosent sing the line "My beard a roughning coal pile and dirty hat pulled low across my face". Terri Clark had a decent cover on her "Classics" album but that line is so jarring with a womans voice. Ha! Especially when several women in the 70's cut a version with altered lyrics for a females perspective...

I was surprised at how fast the tempo was for the studio version (thanks for posting that Fanofctrymusic), but I still enjoyed it more than the live version. Would be shocked to see it do well in Radio however. I understand releasing it since that documentary/movie is coming out, but still don't think it's strong enough for radio.
As for TBT, I am still hoping that Kim Perry goes solo someday and ditches her goofy looking bros. She's the true star of that outfit and can sing sing sing. Just sayin'

I usually don't mind a female singing from a males perspective but that particular line about facial hair always throws me....
