I'll inaugurate this new board, why not?
I few weeks ago I went to see Luke Bryan's "That's My Kind of Night Tour" at the Barclay's Center in Brooklyn, NY. It was billed as the first country concert ever at that venue, which seems somewhat surprising. But with the advent of bro-country the popularity of country music generally seems to be growing, especially among younger "folk." I went to a Kenny Chesney concert at the Meadowlands last year as well. It's always somewhat surreal to me seeing thousands of people in cowboy hats and boots and plaid shirts (literally, 90% of the audience was wearing exactly that) seemingly appear from nowhere. Luke Bryan and his openers made all the proper sounds about being honored to perform in Brooklyn, at Barclay's, etc., but you have to wonder what they really think about all these Long Islanders and Manhattanites completely stereotyping, to the point of parody, southerners (then again, Luke Bryan and his ilk generally milk that stereotype as well, so maybe it's fine).
The opening acts were Cole Swindell, who was decent, and Lee Brice, who was better (if much older than I remembered). My main complaint here would be that the volume was just a bit over the pain threshold for me during Cole's performances. They resolved that pretty quickly though. Luke Bryan started the show with a bang, coming out of a fiery hole in the middle of the audience on top of a pickup truck, because, you know . . . country. He then proceeded to do his "thing," which I consider cheesily shaking his ass all over the stage. There were songs about beer and cars. My favorite performances were "This is How We Roll" and his cover of "Dynamite," plus "Country Girl (Shake it For Me)." It was a mostly upbeat concert, but flowed well and didn't feel too long.
If you can't tell, we went to this concert mostly for my boyfriend, who is totally into the whole bro-country thing. But I like Luke Bryan quite a bit and enjoyed myself.
