BRACE YOURSELVES: According to our numbers-crunchers, it now looks like Taylor Swift’s 1989 will hit the 1.3 million mark, easily besting the 1.2m of her last album. It also appears that she’ll score the second-biggest digital sales week ever, moving past Beyoncé’s 618k and behind only Lady Gaga’s 662k. It should be noted, however, that Beyoncé scored the impressive number in only three days with her surprise iTunes exclusive, while Gaga benefited from a 99 cent sale at Amazon Digital. While we're on the subject, check out I.B. Bad's take on the Taylor narrative here. (10/31a)

I am not a fan of Taylor, but I have to give her a lot of respect for her consistently dominating sales.
With only a week of sales, she's going to have the best selling 2014 release.

But if she falls short of 1 million, that will be the headline. FLOP! -- If she ends up selling, say, 900K, I would hope that any self-respecting publication would mention two things: **That's a ~25% drop from "Red." It's the first album-to-album drop from someone who had previously proven immune to market downturns and is still gaining steam as a radio star. **That's the biggest opening week total of the year by more than double and already the biggest *cumulative* sales mark for any album released in 2014. It's a monster number in *any* year, and it is coming in a year of underwhelming album sales performances. Whether you want to celebrate the number or condemn it, you should be giving the *whole* context. -- But there's a part of me that couldn't imagine the label not buying an extra 50-100K copies to get her over the hump. If she's tracking for 750-800K, then no, they won't be able to get away with it. They could easily push her from 925 to 1 million though.

I predict 800k, hopefully she'll be able to pull that 1 million but it will be tough
Any promo appearances later this week?

If she does pull 1 million, she'll be the only artist to do it 3 times, right? If so, that's incredible, especially given the sales climate.
I know it's said a lot on this board that the weakening sales climate shouldn't affect first-week sales for "event albums" like Taylor's but whatever the reason (climate, TRL effect, etc.), a good handful of artists were pulling in million+ weeks in 1999-2001 and IF 1989 hits the mark, it will be one of 5 albums that have done it in almost a decade - 3 of which, are Swift's.

I think she'll go north of 1 million
With sales predictions out, I wouldn't be surprised if the label discounted the album on Amazon or Google or something.

Big Machine discounted Red for the first time EVER just this past week on iTunes. Literally the only time the album was on sale was for that one day Amazon $2.99 sale around the first few months it came out, and that was on Amazon's bill. Either Big Machine is really oblivious to sales or they know people will pay whatever price they have to to get Taylor's albums. More likely the latter. That said, I hope she hits the million mark. Would be such amazing news at this bleak time in music sales.

I noticed today this album is Amazon's Album Of The Week; it's not discounted, but it's still promo. Damn, I wish my faves all had this woman's flawless promotional team.

Even with her promo (or more), no one outside of Adele is even getting in the same realm as her numbers. See Ariana a few months ago, promo blitzes only work to this extent if the general public actually wants to buy the album. Not really addressing this at you by the way, just wanted to make the point.

A good promotional effort - and smart single roll-out strategy (as in...take a BREAK after the last Crash My Party single comes out) - should be able to net Luke Bryan upwards of 700-750K on the next album. (But I guess you might not be considering that in the same realm, which is fair)

Speak Now was discounted to either $7 or $4 (I don't remember which) it's first week when it was released on Amazon MP3 and they had a $3 MP3 Credit coupon that week as well. I know that is true because that's the only reason I bought the album lol

^...Yea, and that was another sale put on by amazon. I'm trying to say that if it is discounted anywhere, it won't be because of Big Machine but because of Amazon/Google Play wanting to increase traffic. I hope one of them does (at above the $3.99 though), the more sales the better. Even with her promo (or more), no one outside of Adele is even getting in the same realm as her numbers. See Ariana a few months ago, promo blitzes only work to this extent if the general public actually wants to buy the album. Not really addressing this at you by the way, just wanted to make the point. (But I guess you might not be considering that in the same realm, which is fair) If he does pull off those numbers I would think they're fantastic and, at this point in time, definitely comparable to the numbers Taylor is doing. But personally I don't think he'll get there, I see his next debut around 500k (still excellent).

Taylor Swift's '1989' Aiming For 900,000-Plus Sales Debut NEWS By Keith Caulfield | October 27, 2014 6:38 PM EDT
Taylor Swift's 1989 album has been on sale for less than a day, but its first-week sales forecast has already been upgraded.
Industry sources now suggest the fast-selling set may sell over 900,000 copies in the week ending Nov. 2. As earlier reported, that would secure Swift the largest sales week for any album since March of 2013, when Justin Timberlake's The 20/20 Experience debuted with 968,000 sold in its first week, according to Nielsen SoundScan.
1989 is Swift's fifth studio album, and was released Oct. 27 through Big Machine Records. Its first-week sales figure, as tabulated by Nielsen SoundScan, will be announced on Nov. 5.
The album's current sales projection is its second increase in two weeks. Last week, it was pegged to do between 800,000 and 900,000. A week before that: 750,000.
The set is off to a quick start with digital retailers and Target (which carries an exclusive version of the album with bonus tracks).
Can 1989 reach one million sold in its first week? Anything is possible, though it's incredibly difficult for albums to achieve sales of that magnitude. (Only 18 albums have sold a million in a single week since SoundScan started track sales in 1991.)
Also important to keep in mind: In 2014, only one album has sold a million copies in total: the Frozen soundtrack (3.2 million). The next-largest seller is Beyonce's self-titled set, with 787,000.
Thus, if forecasts hold, 1989 could -- after only one week on sale -- become the second-largest selling album of 2014.
Swift's last two albums, Red (released in 2012) and Speak Now (2010), both sold more than a million copies in their respective first weeks (1.21 million and 1.05 million), making her the only woman to earn two million-selling frames. If 1989 does cross the million threshold, Swift will become the only act to have three million-selling weeks. (The last album to sell a million in a week was Red.)

Even if Taylor hits 1M, some publication will note that it's a 20% drop from Red and will conclude it's because she gave up her Country base. Lamestream reporters are not going to delve into industry issues - they don't care - they want the headline. It doesn't matter because the project will be a success.

But the post right above you features the key publication proactively defending a 900,000 total. Most other sites just copy Billboard. So I don't expect too many mainstream publications to call it a flop. I've frankly always found Billboard to be too soft--not too hard--on sales performances. If something does a respectable number and hits #1, it's treated like an undeniable success. BB only applies context if it makes the artist look better.

Does anyone have links to Billboard/HDD estimates throughout the week when Red and Speak Now were released (or links to the threads here)? I think I remember both lowballed estimates at below a million and then increased as the week went along, but I'd just like to compare.
