I like all of Sam Hints music. I just hope he doesn't get pushed to a Luke Bryan or Florida Georgia Line type status so quickly I don't want to see him sell out for the sake of getting hits and stop writting good material. Not that either of this artists have I don't think they have. I just could see that happening to someone with such a big rise.

I get what your saying and I meant to put hunt my phone autocorrected. I was typing in between classes. Anyways I was specifically saying neither florida Georgia line nor bryan sold out for hits but that it could happen to someone in a simillar situation very easily.

Sam Hunt @samhuntmusic Back in Nashville for a couple days making the "Take Your Time" video. We'll have it up in a few weeks! Get ready for a 10 week reign on the Hot Country Songs chart. Wow already #1 on BB Hot Country Songs this week!!! Despite country radio trying to hold back Sam with only #19 airplay, he's already #1 overall on BB based on huge sales & streaming. Congrats Sam!!! The people have spoken....Radio needs to wake up and finally play this song!

I was mainly directing that comment to those dozen stations that took their sweet time and just added the song this week. And there's still 6 more that still haven't even added the song....which unfortunately includes one of my local radio station!! I'm so pissed about that.

A lot of radio stations won't even add a song until it reaches the Top 20, it's pretty common. But those stations who are late to add will most likely play 5 months after it peaks like it's still a current hit song.

This is still only his 2nd single so to say that radio is "holding him back" seems kinda silly to me. This song is moving up incredibly fast for a new artist, and I really think Sam has the potential to be as big as Florida Georgia Line is/was after their debut album (minus "Cruise").

This is continously selling great, and with the video the way, it is definitely not slowing down. Glad to see Sam Hunt get another hit.

It's hard to say. Sam Hunt or Maddie & Tae for this year's Best New Artist at the C.M.A.s?

It's hard to say. Sam Hunt or Maddie & Tae for this year's Best New Artist at the C.M.A.s? Sam Hunt has become far more popular than Maddie & Tae by this point and he's proven that he's not associated with the other bro-country males as some might have thought he would be when "Leave the Night On" was out. I'd be shocked if Maddie & Tae beat Sam Hunt for this award.

This conversation might end up moving over to another thread, but why does Scott Borchetta have a reputation for being more powerful than other label CEOs in country music? Big Machine certainly can't get songs that aren't popular on their own up the charts any better than Universal, Sony, Broken Bow, and Warner Brothers from what I can tell. For example, there were only six Big Machine songs in the top 40 on last Monday's Billboard airplay chart, which isn't great when three of those are outside the top 30 and the label has four divisions (five if you count Nash Icons, which may or may not be working Reba's current single to mainstream country radio). It just seems to me that Scott doesn't have any more power over airplay or awards than Mike Dungan, Gary Overton, John Esposito, or Benny Brown and Big Machine has never been known in the past to win unlikely awards at these shows.
Even as recently as the 2013 ACMs Big Machine couldn't win against Broken Bow in a battle between FGL and Thompson Square for Vocal Duo of the Year, so I don't see Big Machine as likely to have any wild card that gives them the upper hand over Universal and Sam Hunt at all. Scott Borchetta has made a reputation for himself over the success of founding his own label and breaking a big star he discovered on his own and he's further developed this reputation by finding several other artists with unique abilities and star potential and making them successful, but I don't see this as related to Big Machine's airplay or award success and I need to see a bit more evidence before I think Borchetta himself has much control over who gets played on the radio and who gets chosen for awards.

Still, we may have some other artist who takes the award from one of these two anyway.

This conversation might end up moving over to another thread, but why does Scott Borchetta have a reputation for being more powerful than other label CEOs in country music? I think, to an extent, this is a relic of Taylor Swift's country award campaigning days -- her CMA campaigns in particular were well-known for being outsized and expensive. And Big Machine was really the first label to engineer ridiculous Mediabase-only pushes (often on behalf of Taylor, but also on behalf of Rascal Flatts) to get singles to #1 that had no business getting there. But I would agree with you that at this point, Big Machine doesn't appear to have an unusual amount of influence on the awards scene or at country radio, and certainly not enough to make Maddie & Tae the favorites to win a CMA New Artist award at this point. That said, I think Borchetta continues to attract a great deal of attention as a market mover and shaker. His was the first label to strike an all-encompassing royalties deal with Clear Channel (covering digital and terrestrial broadcasts). He has taken a stand against the blanket availability of new music on the "freemium" tier of streaming services like Spotify. He began the Nash Icons joint venture with Cumulus, though it remains to be seen how well that will do. I think that he has earned the reputation of a label executive who is approaching a declining music market with aggression and new ideas. This may not make him more powerful in the country context, and it should be noted that few if any major labels have followed his lead (Warner did negotiate a royalties deal with Clear Channel). But his moves certainly attract attention in an industry looking for new revenues streams and ways to stave off its decline. To bring this back on topic, I think that Sam Hunt will need overwhelming numbers in the current country market context to become the favorite to win the CMA New Artist of the Year award. But I think he has a good chance of achieving those numbers. He will also, as rsmatto points out, have the support of Music Row's biggest label. It's hard to know how other blocs and otherwise unaffiliated voters might see him, but it stands to reason that at least some will resist voting for him on the grounds that his music isn't country. And then the question becomes whether there will be one other nominated artist (like, say, a Brandy Clark) around whom voters can concentrate enough support to result in a win. But I also don't think a CMA win or loss will have much of an impact on Sam Hunt's rise -- it will certainly be a story if he wins, but more for what it says about CMA voters than what it says about his breakout.

I was listening to country (as usual) while driving with my mom the other day. The only time she listens to country is when I do (and she doesn't like it at all).
This song came on and she said, "why is this rapper trying to sing country?" Instead of trying to explain it to her, I just said, "I know."
I do like this song and I like singing along to it, but the fact that it is being marketed in this genre and is racing up the charts (now looking like it may pass a debut Zac Brown song) is just shameful to the genre. Many well-known artists are coming together to stray back toward a more traditional sound (Blake Shelton with "Brining Back the Sunshine", Jake Owen leaning toward more meaningful songs, Luke Bryan abandoning his Spring Break collection and favoring songs like "I See You" and "Shut it Down", Kenny Chesney speaking out against bro-country, Tim McGraw's traditional resurgence, Chase Rice devoting his new work to more meaningful topics, songs like "She Don't Love You", "One Hell of an Amen", "Lay Low" all making impacts) and that tells me radio is going to have to make a decision.
If all our known and loved artists continue to traditionalize their music and radio STILL craves non-country songs like this, what are playlists going to be like? I for one am not looking forward to hearing garbage playlists like on The Highway, where I can hear "Break Up With Him", "Lay it On Me", "Hell of a Night", "Take Your Time", "Love Me Like You Mean It", "Wastin' Gas", "Sippin' on Fire", "Smack Dab", "Burnin' it Down", "Doin' Country Right", "Whole Lotta Nothin'", "Love You Like That", "Leave the Night On" for a whole hour and not be anywhere particularly CLOSE to knowing what songs or artists I just listened to, nevermind the fact that I probably have an annoying pounding in my head which the doctor will prescribe as a minor case of "MOPS" (or "Moi Over Production Syndrome").
It's a good song Sam, but if I want to hear you I'll switch over to Hot 93 for a couple minutes.
Luckily the new Aaron Watson record is reminding me what country actually sounds like.

MOPS is the greatest thing I've read today. Unfortunately MOPS doesn't effect the average fan (along with country radio) and many Joey produced songs find their way to sky rocket up the charts.

I'm wondering if MCA will promote Sam Hunt to other formats given his pop leanings. I would love to see a 'Sam vs. Sam (Smith)' battle on other charts.

Sam is OBVIOUSLY country, he'll even say so himself! And plus why switch when you can just use the country genre to score some easy #1's? I mean heck he's already fooled quite a lot of other people!

I like this song, but yeah, not a fan of the talking, which is why I'd be opposed to "Break Up In a Small Town" being released. Go with "House Party" and the best on the album in "Make You Miss Me" for the next 2 singles, please.

I think Speakers will be the next single, as it will sound great heading into Summer and early Fall. Make You Miss Me seems like a great 4th single and slight risk to take (with it being a little slower and all) to close out the album era.

I'll let you know the results tomorrow. First of all, I would not have sweet and sour chicken. Not my favorite. My favorite Chinese foods are: boneless spareribs, chicken and cashews, and beef with mixed vegetables. Second, getting back to Sam Hunt, I do see him going off in a pop direction like Taylor Swift after being in the country genre for a few years. Whether MCA will allow him to do that would be another story.

Sam doesn't need to go off in a pop direction since he's already there. As long as Sam Hunt continues to be successful on country radio, he will stay in the genre. I need to see country radio decide he's too pop for them to believe he will move over to the pop scene. He will most certainly get airplay on pop radio in the future but to maximize the revenue for him and his label, he will try and be successful on multiple formats which includes country.

Happy surprise to see this now at #15 on iTunes all-genre! This is looking like it'll be a bigger hit than "Leave The Night On" in terms of sales (and that one was a platinum hit). It's only #13 on airplay and no music video yet, so there's still room for growth.
