My favorite on the album and I'm so happy it's going to be a single.

I guess I'm one of the few who doesn't care for this song. I would have much preferred Sunday In The South, unless they thought thematically it was too close to Automatic.

I'm enjoying this song, but I don't like it enough to approve of it being Miranda's next single. Sounding different can be good sometimes, but the just might be a little too different for radio. Miranda's voice sounds pretty monotone in the verses and her voice sounds very different than it usually does. I think listeners will get a little bored with it. It won't translate well to radio.

I'm actually going to be bold here and predict that "Smokin' and Drinkin'" will be Miranda's first Billboard #1 single since "Over You." Radio actually really likes polarizing/"risky" stuff like this most of the time. I know that "Somethin' Bad" was even more radio-friendly than this and still ended up missing out on #1, but I think programmers may not have liked that style for Miranda. This might come across as having more substance and being more unique/special than "Somethin' Bad" and as such I think it'll move the needle with radio a lot better than Miranda's previous two singles have. Also, I expect digital sales for this to be really high and I can see a lot of non-country fans crossing over to buy this single on iTunes. So right now, before this even hits radio, I'm going to predict that it'll be a very successful chart run.

I don't know if I'm going to go quite as bold as your prediction here but I can certainly see "Smokin' And Drinkin'" being a pretty big hit. I listened to it just now for the first time (now it's on repeat) and I have a feeling that it will do quite well digitally. I've never purchased a Miranda Lambert album but she's 3/3 this 'era', at least to my ears. I haven't heard any other tracks on Platinum yet aside from the 3 singles and "Another Sunday In The South", all of which I've loved. I can understand why some people might not like this song but it really drew me in. I actually like the vocals (and the vocal effects) a lot, and just the mood and the atmosphere of this one, as well as the production, has such a cool vibe to me. I hope this does very well for Miranda and LBT. Obviously it will need a radio edit to take out a good bit of the intro and outro (which is unfortunate, but it's too long for radio so some of the song will almost certainly need to be cut), and if the label wanted to perhaps they could adjust the vocal effects a bit to make it a little more radio-friendly (I doubt they'd take out the effects completely, though, as this was obviously the feel Miranda was going for and the way she wanted it).

I love this, it's grown on me a lot since the album came out. I'm just not sure it makes sense as a single release. I was totally expecting "Priscilla" or "Platinum" to be next, although my personal choice would've been "Girls". I think that would've been the best single choice for the fall/winter.

I think this is a pretty solid choice and I think it should do well for her - close to top 5. I hope it's not too different for radio. I like Little Red Wagon a lot, but I don't see that doing well on radio. Platinum and Babies Making Babies have to be singles though - locks to be hits. Sad we probably won't get to hear Bathroom Sink on the radio, but it likely wouldn't do very well - I'll never put it past Miranda to just throw a risky one out there at the end though. (And if she's feeling really risky Gravity, but I'll just hope for BS)

One of my favorites off the album but I'm surprised she went with another duet for a single

There's a big ad for Miranda in tonight's BCU about her big CMA night on Wednesday, but there's no mention of this song. I thought for sure that they'd use the opportunity to promote the new single.

^Yeah i'm surprised there's no adds date yet. Somethin' Bad isn't even in the top 10 recurrents right now, so after the performance on the ACM's it would have seemed natural to go for adds right away. Not sure what they're waiting for.

There's a big ad for Miranda in tonight's BCU about her big CMA night on Wednesday, but there's no mention of this song. I thought for sure that they'd use the opportunity to promote the new single. I thought that was a little strange, too, so I looked at the other ads in this week's BCU and Country Aircheck. With the exception of the Warner Nashville ads for Blake Shelton and Brett Eldredge, none of the other congratulatory ads for other CMA winners (Luke, Little Big Town, Keith, and Kacey) mentioned their current singles, either (of course, Kacey doesn't have a current single). I can't say I see the logic in the omission, but it was a common one between UMG Nashville and Sony Nashville, apparently. In any event, I'm only speculating, but I had posted a while back in the Carrie thread over in the General Artist Discussion forum that if Carrie released a single in October (which I wrongly thought was the earliest she would release), then I expected there to be a bit of a gap between the second and third Platinum singles. Why? I had the feeling that in the current climate, Sony Nashville would feel the need to put some space in between its solo female singles, even if they involved the format's two female A-listers. Not putting that space would potentially mean that country radio would slow the trailing female single down so that it didn't hit the top-10 until the leading female single had peaked. Putting this in a more positive way, Sony Nashville may have felt its solo female singles might stand more of a chance at a smooth run up the charts if only one were trying to move into the highest rotations at any given time (so in a similar way, if "Little Toy Guns" is Carrie's next single, I wouldn't be surprised to see Sony Nashville holding it until it feels that "Smokin' & Drinkin'" is far enough ahead). Moreover, maybe there will be more pent-up demand for a Miranda single after the wait, which will help it get off to a better start. My guess is that "Smokin' & Drinkin'" will be announced in two weeks with an early December adds date. ETA: Another theory that may make more sense...perhaps RCA Nashville is waiting out "Day Drinking," which will peak in the next two weeks?I have another speculative theory, which is that RCA Nashville deliberately chose another collaborative single for Miranda because a) in the current climate, it's taking "event" releases (as in, lead singles or collaborations) for females to score hits and b) female-led groups are seen as having more of a chance to excel at radio than solo females. I also think it is crazy that a label might need to apply these considerations to the format's second biggest female star so again, hopefully I'm wrong and this is just where the label hears a hit.

How is there no adds date for this yet? I'm not sure what they're waiting for, as "Day Drinking" is about to peak, and "Somethin' Bad" peaked over a month ago. I fear that Miranda is going to have little momentum by the time they release this song, especially if they wait until after New Years. This is almost starting to look like Sara Evans Pt. 2 (although they'd need to wait quite a few more weeks to rival that blunder).

I've wondered this myself, but it could be that Sony is trying to space out the singles from Miranda and Carrie a bit, like 43dudleyvillas speculated about just a couple posts above. ETA: Another theory that may make more sense...perhaps RCA Nashville is waiting out "Day Drinking," which will peak in the next two weeks?I wouldn't be surprised if this theory is mostly true. In any case it's a real shame that radio operates the way it does, with virtually no females "allowed" on playlists. There are only 3 possible adds dates left in the 2014 calendar year, with those being the 1st, 8th, and 15th of December. Sony has already set the 1st aside for Steven Lee Olsen and the 15th aside for Josh Dorr, so unless they send "Smokin' And Drinkin' for adds on December 8, we're likely looking at a January adds date here I suppose they could send it for adds on the 1st (or 15th), but it's incredibly rare for multiple acts from the same label to have the same adds date. November 24 can obviously be ruled out, too (for one thing, it would have been confirmed by now), as we already have Garth's "Mom" going for adds that day. I hope this gets a 12/8 adds date...a Miranda single shouldn't have to worry too much about getting lost in the shuffle when all the holiday music starts taking away spins.

I'm hoping for a 12/8 adds date, too. I think that Miranda is big enough to avoid the holiday rush, and with "Somethin' Bad" having been off the charts for a little while now, it makes sense to get a new single out there. It is sad that they RCA might have to wait out Artista and Carrie, but I do agree that that could be a factor here. That would make more sense discussing trends in 1914 vs. 2014, but I digress.

I'm so glad I watched the CMAs this year! I was able to catch up on older hits and listen to new stuff. I heard this one at the CMAs for the first time. ML's voice in the verses were initially off putting but then the chorus was nice and the second half of the song felt much better. By the end of the song, the chorus and melody got stuck. I bought it and now it's one of my recent favorites :) even I'm getting used to the vocal effect in the verses. The harmonies are gold and the instrumentation is great too. It's what I consider a perfect sunset song. It also reminds me of music that fleetwood Mac could be recording (some tracks from tango in the night for example). Even if it's not a hit on radio, I'm happy she released this :) Now, I do have one negative: the title and lyrics. I'm anti smoking, so... It'd also be interesting to see how a song with that title is received by those who thought the lyrics of Follow your arrow were too controversial (?!)

I'm pretty sure the 'smoking' in this song refers to just cigarettes, so there's no controversy to be had there. Smoking isn't nearly as commonplace as it use to be, but it's a legal practice (unlike marijuana which is illegal in most places still) and it's still something that is fairly closely tied with drinking, and that's a popular theme in country music. I don't expect this to have any trouble being a hit; regardless of whether it ends up being a Number One hit or not, Miranda Lambert's basically a lock for Top 10, at least.

I can see it being a little bit of a "You And Tequilla", where it drives sales and is a major fan favourite, but misses out on #1 at radio. Still though, I think this song's main job is getting Platinum to, well, Platinum, and I think that it will (or otherwise will come very close).

Is this now a legitimate single or are we still speculating? Does anybody know for sure? Could not find any confirmation on the net. I'm asking because "Girl Crush" got an add date 12/15 this week.

I too am wondering what the hold up is on this one. Maybe they weren't happy with whatever reaction they perceived after the CMAs?
For a song that so heavily features Little Big Town (to the point where it could almost be mistaken for a LBT single), it does seem weird to release this so close to their own new single, if it is going to be released at all...

I don't get what the deal is with the delay of releasing a new single. RCA Nashville did this shit to Sara Evans, but c'mon this is Miranda Lambert, the biggest female at country radio today. And I really hope they stick with "Smokin' and Drinkin'" too, because "Holding on to You" is like my least favorite track on Platinum and I'd rather not see that as a single.

I'm starting to think that they're going with something else (or at least strongly considering it). This is just taking way too long. It's a dumb move too, since arguably country's biggest female artist won't have a current single from her new album during holiday shopping season.

So I guess this is the 4th single now, apparently?
I love this, but I just don't get it as a single for the radio. If "Girls" doesn't get to be a single, someone at the label needs to be fired.

This isn't a single yet, nor do we have any confirmation. It was originally planned to be the 3rd single but then they switched to "Little Red Wagon" instead. So, until we have confirmation of what the 4th single will be (whether it's "Smokin' And Drinkin'" or another track), discussion about what the next single will be should take place in the "Little Red Wagon" thread, now that LRW has gone recurrent on the charts.

Anyway, this debuted at #7 on the digital songs chart with 27,000 sold. I want Miranda Lambert to get a #1 here. This didn't debut, the other single ("Roots and Wings") for the commercial did.
