What is the formula used to get those points? (e. g. Royals 1093592) I noticed at first Royals had 1.21 million and also One More Night used to be behind We Are Young in the first pages and now it jumped ahead so the formula must have changed (if it's been posted here before what page? there's too many to go through and try and track it down)

I use georgetherunners formula. The reason for the point jump is due to the points being corrected. When i originally made the list, I put wrong multipliers and made tons of typos in the initial calculation. The positions should all be near exact now

Also sorry if this is a stupid question but what multipliers are used at what time? I used George's formula for "All About That Bass" and I got 1298214, meaning that for that era the multiplier would be about x .085

Is Billboard really going to let that many songs dominant in 2019 enter the decade-end list?

Like even if they somehow do, it's not like Billboard will keep the x0.80 for this era, they'll probably lower it to x0.75. 

And if that's the case I'm not saying those songs will not make it, the 2019 songs closer to the top 100 will miss.

So if you think about it, basically the cutoff for the decade-end list will be 716k or 709k depending on if I'm lucky or not.

For songs that only charted in 2019, it will be more like only 7 or 8 though since some songs charted well over 2 years.

Update: I just checked and Eastside has pulled ahead, about 360K pts v 346K pts not including this week, which would only extend Eastside's least.

Now that this has been settled, I can only hope we can return normalcy to our lives.

Tanooki, any reason why Dec 30 1972 is a major cut-off point?

Just 5 months later on June 9, 1973, the Hot 100 had the biggest overhaul in its entire history (biggest until Nov 30, 1991 - hell, just look at the actual published chart - it's bizarre)
That would seem like a more logical era break...

That would seem like a more logical era break...

I'm not entirely sure, but perhaps Billboard decided that the start of the 1973 chart year would be an easier multiplier for them to do. Considering the only other multiplier changes where the dates aren't calendar/chart years are the Neilsen update and the Streaming update, it's entirely possible that they went with arbitrary dates (the start of a year, chart or calendar year) as their start of an "era"

I really think it's impossible for High Hopes. He needs like 17-18k points every week till 52 weeks. But hey, Brendon has one of the biggest songs of this decade, top 120 is cool.

Also, I think it's hard for Starboy too, Wow and OTR will be in the top 100 + one song for sure (Sucker, bad guy, Talk or something else).

Just 5 months later on June 9, 1973, the Hot 100 had the biggest overhaul in its entire history (biggest until Nov 30, 1991 - hell, just look at the actual published chart - it's bizarre)

I looked up the June 9, 1973 chart on the Billboard site and didn't notice any out of the norm activity. There were several songs that dropped a lot, a couple that made major leaps, but that was typical of the day. No large number of debuts or high-charting debuts either.

Putting aside the Billboard site (manually input 8 years ago without context), if you check the June 9 1973 issue (Google books / American Radio History) or Joel Whitburn's books that photocopy the actual printed charts, you'll see that the last week column says "This column deleted this week only. For explanation, see Page One story". Basically Airplay was re-added to the Top 50 (missing since the late 60s), Jukeboxes were increased dramatically, and sales decreased. This week is notorious as it was the only time that American Top 40 with Casey Kasem was like 95% inaccurate, as this chart was published late and the countdown did not yet have the new chart. It was known by chart watchers as the biggest Hot 100 methodology change ever (until 1991, 1998, 2005, etc).

"Billboard Launches Super Singles Chart" - Five major changes are being introduced in the Hot 100 Chart, effective with this week's Billboard.

 Of primary significance is the fact that the methodology of preparing the Hot 100 has been changed to reflect the changes in the singles record business. The number of dealers handling singles - which heretofore had been sampled for the Hot 100 Chart - has been dwindling.

 To make up for the reduced number of dealers, the Hot 100 methodology has been readjusted to include one-stops and a greater emphasis on radio airplay. The addition of reports from one-stops injects a new essential factor in the compilation of the Hot 100 - that of the jukebox operator. One-stops are the primary singles source for operators and, by sampling one-stops, the Hot 100 will include in its compilation the relative strength of singles in jukeboxes, as well as, sales at the retail level and radio airplay.



Jukeboxes 50 percent:


Industry estimates place the sale of singles to the jukebox industry at 50 percent of the total, thus making the jukebox operator equal in importance to the retailer. 

Inasmuch as this issue's Hot 100 is based upon a different research sample than last week's - as the result of adding one-stops and giving increased emphasis to radio airplay - no valid basis of comparison exists between the chart positions as they appear this week with the previous week. In short, a different yardstick is being used now to 
measure singles strength.



Therefore, to avoid reader confusion, the Hot 100 column headed "Last Week" has been deleted from this week's chart. This column, of course, will be reinstated in all future Hot 100 charts once the new basis of comparison (i.e., this week's Hot 100) has been established.



Another important change being introduced in this week's Hot 100 is the positioning of records by computer. In harnessing the computer to rank each week's selections, the time consumed for manual chart compilation has been eliminated, as well as, the possibility of human error.



Faster Chart

High speed compilation by computerization thus results in a faster chart reflection of actual market place conditions as to retail sales, radio, and jukebox programming activity.
This is achieved by narrowing the time interval from the moment the market place sample is taken and the chart is printed.



Another major feature introduced in this week's Hot 100 is "The Super Seven". These are the seven singles which showed the *greatest chart strength* during the week in the bottom 70 of the chart. Singles in the top 30 are considered established hits, and because of their dominance in the market place do not require the "Star" designation.
