I wonder how rare it is for a song to hit 24 (I think consecutive) weeks on the chart like El Perdon and still not make the top 50?? The English version release of course allowed it to start gaining right when it was on its last leg. Headband by B.o.B did the same thing in 2013-2014

Ellie has 2 debuts in one week, interesting. I thought I'd check how many songs she'd charted -- turns out it's only 10 total (I didn't know Beating Heart and Explosions charted):
2 - Lights 3 - Love Me Like You Do 13 - Burn 16 - I Need Your Love (w/Calvin Harris) 22 - On My Mind 29 - Outside (w/Calvin Harris) 47 - Anything Could Happen 88 - Beating Heart 95 - Powerful (w/Major Lazer and Tarrus Riley) 100 - Explosions

Wow I didn't realize how fast Bad Blood was falling... Unless it rebounds, it will be the first #1 song to spend fewer than 20 weeks in the Top 40 since "Harlem Shake".

I'm 100% here for 20 weeks or less for ANY song these days. Get in and get out. The longevity of big hits is increasingly more and more ridiculous.

It appears Pop Music is receeding again. Look at the bottom 50... Seems close to 95% is R&B/HH or Country.
It's not a fait accompli yet, but I have seen this cycle at least four times before since 1970.
A lot has to do with Streaming dominance, lack of new superstar product, an aging of yesteryear's stars, and a CHR rut.

Maybe it will change when Gaga, Adele, Ariana, Katy or other pop singers release new songs.

It could. I hope so.
But I recall in the early 90s everyone saying Paula Abdul, Bobby Brown, Bon Jovi, Richard Marx, Expose and Taylor Dayne's new releases would turn the tide but they didn't.

The top 10 alone is R&B/HH-centric. It just gives me shudders to think back to the godawful state music was in circa 2003-2007.

Pop is definitely on the decline after the huge boom earlier in this decade. The hot, buzz-worthy stars right now are The Weeknd, Fetty Wap, Drake, etc. Gaga, Rihanna, Ke$ha, and Katy Perry all seemed to underperform in their last eras and they no longer feel like they dominate the pop culture conversation. Of course that could change and they could continue to have more hits ("Dark Horse" could signal a direction change for Katy Perry going forward), but their moment of pop saturation has passed.

Is it a problem that it's R&B/Hip-Hop now? It's finally diverse, it's been stagnant for the longest.

if anyone is interested in buying a copy Joel Whitburn's Billboard Pop Singles 1955-2012 hardcover book, i have a coupon email to order it for $30 off (making it only $49.99). send me a PM with your email and i'll forward the coupon to you. it's a great book!!
Mind you, i'm sure this means there's a new edition coming out.. but still worth the price.

Of course that could change and they could continue to have more hits ("Dark Horse" could signal a direction change for Katy Perry going forward), but their moment of pop saturation has passed. It's simply too soon to how someone like Fetty Wap is going to do, right now he had three hit songs, but his album is far from doing on that level. And the same with The Weeknd, he is doing well for some time, but now he reached a different level, if he will be able to sustain that level in future efforts is something that will see (anyway he is not Fetty's same situation because he had a decent career before the explossion) Drake on the other hand is an established artist. Hip hop is getting some hits lately, but it was struggling to have a top 10 not so long ago. Streams benefit hip hop artist, but right now absolutely nothing indicates the genre is going to dominate again like it did a decade ago. In fact crossover hits from hip hop, no matter how big the song is, are struggling on the pop charts. And the only big hip hop number one of the year has a totally pop chorus that mades the song. Maybe it's a change of cicle, but i can't see that clearly now

Is it a problem that it's R&B/Hip-Hop now? It's finally diverse, it's been stagnant for the longest. The big hip hop hits in recent years (with a few exceptions) are as bad as the worst pop hits. And diversity is exactly the key. Hip hop hits lately are as diverse thematically as country hits, and even videos lack of originality, are the same cliches again and again and again. For a genre where lyrics as supposely so important, the quality of the lyrics is very far from decent.

For a genre where lyrics as supposely so important, the quality of the lyrics is very far from decent. With the exception of Drake, I see your point. Trap Queen, 679, and My Way aren't lyrical wonders, but they are catchy. I was talking about mainstream hip hop in general. Fetty Wap success is not accidental, his songs are very catchy. In my opinion mainstream hip hop artist have a problem of credibility, not street cred or bullshit like that (a rapper is not better if he was in a gang or in jail). Rap was supposed to be urban poetry, a way to express rage and a cronic of the difficult life on cities (specially the life of black people), but lately all you get in mainstream rap hit are song about money, drugs and women (well women in a derogatory and misoginistic way). And the worst part is that it's even an advance because homophobia seems out of fashion in rap lyrics (at least the ones reaching mainstream success, which at least is an advance). Don't get me wrong, i'm no expert in rap by any means and i know there's a lot of interesting rap artist out there, like every generalization there's a lot of exceptions. The problem is that media seems to pay way more attention to the less interesting ones. Everybody praise Kendrick Lamar but urban radio stations doesn't seem crazy for the guy. When pop song have more interesting and diverse lyrics (and pop is a genre know for the vapid lyrics in the sense let's throw a party and put your hands in the air) you have a problem. Of course country, a genre known for telling stories in their lyrics is suffering something similar and everybody seems to sing the same lyrics and make the same video

The pop artists you mention as underperforming were all coming off highly successful eras, so of course they seem to "underperform"... but there's an even newer class of pop stars making waves now... not necessarily taking gaga or katy's place, but... adding into the mix, ensuring pop isn't going anywhere anytime soon. i just don't see it happening. at most, pop production may start to lean more hip hop than dance.

It's cyclical, pop will find its way back again, they haven't peaked in streaming yet (which is going stronger as time passes) so we shall see
