www.hitsdailydouble.com/news/rumormill.cgiYOUR TOP 15: It looks like a race is brewing for the #1 best-selling album next week. Taylor Swift and Pentatonix are both hovering around 190k in sales. Tay Tay will take a wide lead once track sales and streaming are added in, however. Here’s how it looks with only three weekends left before Christmas. Sigh. 1. Taylor Swift (Big Machine) 185-195k / 235-245k SPS 2. Pentatonix (RCA) 185-195k / 200-210k SPS 3. AC/DC (Columbia) 135-145k / 140-150k SPS 4. Idina Menzel (Warner Bros.) 70-75k / 75-80k SPS 5. Michael Buble (Reprise) 60-65k / 65-70k SPS 6. Garth Brooks (Pearl/RCA Nashville) 55-60k / 55-60k SPS 7. One Direction (SYCO/Columbia) 50-55k / 65-70k SPS 8. 3 Christmas albums in the Top 5 = weak release schedule.
Nice re-climbs from Pink Floyd and Bennett/GaGa.
Garth is holding on.
So is Michael W Smith...

Yet another great hold for Taylor.
Terrible #s for AC/DC.
1D probably won't go platinum (in actual sales.)

With one founding member gone, there may not be so much interest in a new AC/DC album.

How are Mary's sales even bad? Considering the state of R&B sales, especially females, and especially females over 40, and the fact the only place she has a hit is Urban AC, those seem good to me. Shows she has a pretty strong core following.

Damn so the streaming into sales only really benefit younger artists, ugh. Not sure if I really like that.

Their audiences are still buying albums. I know that. I'm just saying that I would love to see older artists benefit from this new method as well; however, older artists rarely sell singles and aren't quite popular with streaming either. I don't like the disadvantage that they have now with this. Let me not speak on genre focus because "Pop" artists (some country and rap artists) will truly get the "goodness" of this.

While I agree in finding it ridiculous that a chart adapted to measure "consumption" is only measuring certain forms of "consumption" (most applicable to a certain class of artist), note that changing the chart rules only makes sense if it *does* change rankings (that's why I find it odd that people are simultaneously defending the rule change but also saying - look, not much is changing). The only reason to adjust the chart methodology is if you feel you have a more accurate way of measuring album popularity/consumption. In this case, Billboard is saying that the previous methodology disproportionately *hurt* younger/modern/pop artists and is thus correcting for that (and better capturing true album status) by incorporating streams.

Damn so the streaming into sales only really benefit younger artists, ugh. Not sure if I really like that. I think that was the whole point of changing the formula. A strictly sales-based chart represents an antiquated model of music consumption that is not reflective of the current technological landscape. It's mainly helping younger artists because younger people are the ones who have grown up with the mindset that streaming songs and digitally cherrypicking album tracks to purchase are viable, or even desirable, ways to experience music.

So Billboard has Taylor at 225,000 for the week? Isn't Billboard usually more conservative than HITS? This is perhaps even better news for Taylor then. If she clears 225,000 then it's up from there until the end of the year.

I don't think they're saying that Pentatonix is a threat for #1, just that the steaming will bring help it more than it will for 1989. After all, 1989 only had 36k total streams last week. Making up some of the difference doesn't mean that it will surpass it. Everyone knows that's impossible because 1989's track sales.

I know they're not saying it's going to win, but last week, SEA+TEA didn't help it make up the difference. It actually lost ground because Swift's received a far greater boost from TEA. Swift led PTX by like 64,000 copies on the sales chart but by over 100,000 on the BB200

I have a feeling that once older people "get in" with the whole streaming thing, the numbers are going to start shifting. Kind of like how Facebook was for millennials but now there are plenty of folks from the prior generation on it.

I dont think older consumers will ever make that shift (at least until they stop producing physical albums, which I don't see happening for a very long time. They're are buying digitals yet, let alone streaming.

My biggest issue with streaming is that it could count multiple listens from one person. If someone buys an album but listens to it every day, it would only count as one purchase. However with streaming, someone could not buy an album, but then stream it numerous times, and it would count numerous times (unless they've addressed this somehow and I've missed it. Sorry if that's the case).
