Don't matter how you try to discredit it, AATB was "Happy/Thrift Shop/Blurred Lines/CMM/STIUTK popular". I'm definitely not trying to discredit it. I bought it the second I heard it and I still listen to it frequently, whereas some of the other songs mentioned I couldn't stand. With that said, I just don't believe it was as popular as these other songs.

Don't matter how you try to discredit it, AATB was "Happy/Thrift Shop/Blurred Lines/CMM/STIUTK popular". I won't deny AATB is huge - in fact, one of the biggest songs of this year (surely it would be much higher than #8 on year-end had it been on the chart for more weeks in a single chart year), but those songs were probably much bigger tbh and the decade-end chart would show that (after its run). AATB needs to be on the chart 30+ more weeks in order to match the size of those songs but I doubt it will be on for that long. Perhaps 15-20 more weeks on chart left for it. It is about 70-80% as big as the least significant of those five songs (would be TS since it is the only one not in top 10 decade-to-date). But I guess only time will tell so we will see. Don't matter how you try to discredit it, AATB was "Happy/Thrift Shop/Blurred Lines/CMM/STIUTK popular". I disagree. AATB is huge, but Happy, BL, TS, CMM, went to the next level of huge. When grandparents are dancing to a song a la Happy, it crossed all generations, all countries, all races... Plus STIUTK which was even bigger than aforementioned songs (as per Billboard's decade-to-date top 20 list). Although there were surely many grandparents dancing to AATB. It was (and still is) in the top 10 on AC and fell just barely short of #1 on HAC so obviously the song appealed a lot to older audiences as well as youngsters.

Neither "Thrift Shop" or "All About That Base" seem like the same type of pop culture phenomenon as the other songs mentioned.

AATB will be remembered for sure, but remembered less than the other songs I think. It will also probably rank lower than all of them on the decade-end chart (I honestly can only see it POSSIBLY passing Thrift Shop if it is on the chart until May-June, though it surely will be pretty high decade-end - can't imagine it not being in the top 40 even if it does start free-falling). I wonder how big Blank Space will be decade-end - whether it will have enough longevity to be high on the decade-end chart or burn out fast enough to not be on it at all...

#1's did seem to hang around longer than normal (given their popularity). With that said it felt like we only had one HUGE number one this year with Happy. You could argue for AATB, but it wasn't Happy/Thrift Shop/Blurred Lines/CMM/STIUTK popular. Agreed, but I felt like Happy, Dark Horse, and All Of Me were close. And those 3 singles felt bigger than Thrift Shop to me.

But I get what you're saying, I felt Royals didn't feel huge/blockbuster, but it's chart performance says otherwise.

I think it's too early to tell. Sometimes songs have big peaks but then fall off so quick (i.e Born This Way).
