This song is absolutely incredible. Definitely right up there with "Consider Me Gone" as one of my favorites by her. It's like they combined the concept of "Strange" with the high energy and production of "Turn on the Radio" and even though I like both of these, this one blows both out of the water! Wow is this good! :o It sounds like an absolute smash, too. I'm ready for her to make yet another comeback at country radio. <3

I was having high hopes for this, and Reba didn't disappoint. Absolutely love it.

I finally listened to this yesterday, and it's a "meh" verdict from me.
I would probably like this more if it was sung by a younger artist, but I' ve never liked the the idea of Reba trying to be that artist. The lyrics are decent and the melody is catchy, but this is way below the standards I'd expect from Reba.
I know she wants a hit, but I'd take a great song over a forgettable radio hit anytime.

I think this was a smart choice for a new Reba single -- the melody is really engaging and comfortable, and the lyrics have that uplifting sassy vibe that has served Reba well on her most recent hit singles. That vibe is also one that Reba delivers especially well -- the third person voice lets Reba act her age and sound like an encouraging sister-figure, and there's a little bit of signature Reba humor in her delivery that makes this song sound especially believable coming from her. As for its prospects at radio, I'm torn between agreeing with jhomes87 and sabre14's skepticism about the full country radio panel's willingness to support a new single from a veteran female legend on one hand and on the other hand wondering if country radio is willing to treat her first single in a while as an "event" worth supporting, especially in a climate in which Tim McGraw is releasing and succeeding with a sound that would have fit right into country radio in the 1990s. So looking at early indicators, "Going Out Like That" is the Greatest Gainer for the week so far on the Billboard Real Time Tracker with a +8775 (which means 877.5K in audience, right?). It has fourteen starters at All Access, eleven of which are Cumulus stations. The three that are not are Portland's KUPL (owned by Alpha Broadcasting), Spokane's KXLY (owned by QueenB Radio), and Denver's KYGO (owned by Lincoln Financial Media). Not a single Clear Channel or CBS station yet, which is early reason to think jhomes87 and sabre14 were right to be skeptical. But surely the other stations will at least test the song in the coming weeks, and if other metrics look good for "Going Out Like That," perhaps the rest of the big radio conglomerates will also get on board.

Yes. Technically, 877.5 more than it had over the previous 7 days, but when that previous total was 0 then you can be confident in using the 877.5 for a current total.
On last week's BB chart, 1.2 mill would have been a virtual tie with Will Hoge for #53. This coming week we'll have a couple of recurrents (Shay, Niemann) but of course some of the other low-ranking songs might move up past Reba. I wouldn't be bothered by a 1.2 mill total but I'd like more.
As of a few days ago, I was hoping for a 3 mill total and a top 40 debut for the Reba song, but that doesn't look likely with the low-ish audience total reported by the RTT.
EDITED to point out that, on today's RTT, Reba's total audience is 1.321 million. Might wind up in the 2 mill range, if the weekend is unkind to Reba -- that's usually what happens on the weekend. But if radio is more generous, then maybe 2.5 mill is possible. That seems too high to me, but we can hope.

Another thing that's interesting to me about this release is that it lists both Valory and Nash Icons as the labels, and that tells me that they'll probably still try to work this to mainstream radio as much as they can (that's where Valory would come in), and of course it will probably be getting substantial airplay on Cumulus stations, especially those branded as Nash Icon.
Reba should have no trouble going top 40 based on Cumulus airplay alone, but like Dudley said, it might take some good metrics (such as good sales and good research feedback) to get a lot of the other non-Cumulus stations to jump on board (and it's so far, so good with the sales). Clear Channel in particular might be tough to sway, given that Nash Icons is an exclusive joint-venture between Big Machine and Cumulus (FYI, in case anybody didn't already know this, Cumulus is Clear Channel's biggest rival, so that's a big reason why this situation is rather...interesting).

I'm glad I'm not in music marketing cause I'd be fired for being too honest. If I was marketing for Reba and Garth's new projects I'd be completely real about it. I'd just say play these legends cause their legacies are the reasons you in Country radio have jobs today.

I know I haven't commented on this song yet, but I have been listening to it non-stop since Tuesday... I love how Reba sounds on this song! It is so vintage yet modern. Reba has managed once again to reinvent her sound to match the times while still remaining true to herself. There have been criticisms of the lyrics being weak, but I am completely of the opposite opinion. They are simple, yes, but weak they are not. I find there to be a simple charm to them. Lines like "She's got a couple new guys blowin' up her phone, and she loves the way that that feels. You'd never know she was goin' through a break-up. There ain't a single tear messin' up her makeup." paint a vivid picture of the subject's character. The listener can tell that the subject of the song is determined to not let her sadness defeat her, and is experiencing new emotions that she has not felt in quite some time, trying to focus on the exhilaration of life rather than missing out due to sadness. This is a song about a strong woman, sung by one of the strongest women this genre has ever known. The main character may be throwing back shots and partying like a college kid, but it still seems age-appropriate for Reba to be singing about these things due to the 3rd-person narration of the song. The production is clear, and I even hear a steel guitar in there! My only complaint is the weird effect for the majority of the 3rd chorus. It was alright when it was just applied to "goin' out like that" at the end of each chorus, but giving the majority of the 3rd chorus that weird production is a questionable choice in my opinion. However, that is my only complaint, and I really would not be surprised if that part grows on me.
I wish nothing but the best for Reba with this project. If anything is going to help her get her foot back in the door, it is going to be this!

As a follow-up on the stations playing the song, the first CBS station to play the song twice popped up this morning, and it's KFRG Riverside. Still no Clear Channel stations that have spun the song more than once in its first two days out, but "Going Out Like That" did pick up some additional stations not owned by one of the three big conglomerates.
I'm not especially enamored with the lyrics of this song -- I was going to say yesterday that the "blowin' up her phone" lyric didn't sound right coming from Reba, but refrained because it didn't sound right to me coming from Hillary Scott in "Bartender," either. I like the dual meaning in "[ain't] going out like that," but the rest of the lyrics tread no new ground. For me, the charm of the song is entirely in the melody and the personality in Reba's delivery.

I think the lyrics for this, while far from being anywhere near one of her best, are pretty solid in the confines of what the song is aiming for. I don't have a problem with them and I agree with bboat11 that they get the job done in the imagery department. Her being a third-person narrator makes the age not really a factor, though I admit that this doesn't really bother me anyway and it wouldn't have bothered me if she were directly playing the protagonist in the song. I don't find them any less believable than the notion that George Strait can pick up a woman in "I Got a Car" and start a family with her at his age.

I don't find them any less believable than the notion that George Strait can pick up a woman in "I Got a Car" and start a family with her at his age. The first song that came to mind for me as an age-appropriate conflict was actually also a George song! "I Saw God Today" is a phenomenal song, and I absolutely love it, despite the fact that it is a little weird to hear a man in his late 50's singing about having a brand new baby. The fact that there is an age discrepancy between artist and material usually has little to no effect on my enjoyment of a song whatsoever, as long as the material is good. "Goin' Out Like That" is, to me, a song that has an infectious positive energy that becomes enjoyable and believable with Reba's earnest delivery, regardless of what the subject in the song is doing. The main time I have an issue with age gap is when an artist is releasing music that is well below their maturity level. While this song is actually about a girl hitting up parties and drinking, it comes across to me more like "A Little Bit Stronger" than "Drink To That All Night".

This idea doesn't strike me as incredibly well thought out by Big Machine. Clear Channel stations are being asked to play a song branded as a Nash Icons single, named after the Nash brand of Cumulus-owned country stations. It seems to me this is almost asking for a challenge. Reba was already on her way out the door when it comes to mainstream radio success, so even without the Nash Icons business it would be a gamble whether radio would play her song. Now Clear Channel has an extra reason to be skeptical to add the single. To make matters more frustrating for non-Cumulus stations, Cumulus' America's Morning Show was given the privilege of world-premiering the song before it was even on the desks of any other radio stations. When Clear Channel does the hourly world premiere events, I'm pretty sure the song is on the desk of any radio station that wants to play it at the same time Clear Channel gets it and starts the hourly spins. All things considered, I'd say since Reba is still making a bit of a splash with this comeback, Clear Channel will "have" to add the song next week or the week after, but Valory may still have some trouble getting IHM radio stations to give this single consistent rotation after the initial hype dies down.
On another note, I did hear this played for the first time on America's Morning Show Tuesday morning, and I couldn't help but feel Blair Garner's reaction to the song was quite superfluous. Blair was acting like he'd just heard the next "Live Like You Were Dying." I'm not one to get very opinionated about music (or anything, for that matter), but his over-the-top, exaggerated reaction to the song is consistent with the theme I've been noticing that, since Blair switched to America's Morning Show from After MidNite, he's lost his "real-talk" shtick and seems to try much harder to flatter artists and throw them "softball" questions or comments. I'm not saying I want Blair to take the same approach as Bobby Bones and meanly insult artists while starting a "nice people club" for artists who haven't hurt his feelings, but I wish Blair would give more believable, realistic reactions to the music. It just seems he used to be a lot less influenced by artists and label politics back when his show was only on overnight.

I really wanted to like this, but I don't at all. I expected something a little better, especially since her last "comeback" album was so good.

On Mediabase's All-Stations Spin Increase list, this has 608 spins from 79 stations. KUPL-FM in Portland is far and away the leader, with 36 plays.

The last pre-chart Billboard Real-Time Tracker figure for the week puts "Going Out Like That" at 2.2037 million AIs for the week. I think Zazie's 2.5 million projection for Billboard looks achievable. WMZQ Washington, D.C. played the song twice on Friday evening, it appears, since it showed up as a starter yesterday morning. That would be the first Clear Channel station to spin the single, so it's not a total freeze-out from that conglomerate. It's not likely that any additional stations will pick the song up over the weekend, obviously, so our next marker will be the adds that "Going Out Like That" receives on Monday beyond the Cumulus block.

If she indeed opens up with 2.5 million on Billboard for the week, that should put her in the 44-46 range. I was hoping for a top 40 debut, but a debut in that range is still good.
I'm glad to see that a Clear Channel station has started to play the song. It'll be a bit of a slower go there I'm sure, but that's a sign in the right direction. The stations that add the song tomorrow should be interesting. I'm hoping for the best.

"Going Out Like That" is 6th most-added on Mediabase today.
MICKEY GUYTON/Better Than You Left Me (Capitol) 79 MIRANDA LAMBERT/Little Red Wagon (RCA) 65 A THOUSAND HORSES/Smoke (Republic Nashville) 49 FRANKIE BALLARD/Young & Crazy (Warner Bros./WAR) 48 ZAC BROWN BAND/Homegrown (SouthrnGrnd/Varvatos/BMLG) 37 REBA/Going Out Like That (Valory/Nash Icon) 22
GOLT is also the Hot Shot Debut on Billboard, where it checks in at #45.
Tomorrow we'll be able to check AllAccess for the full list of stations that added this song. I'm sure it's getting played on more than 22 stations, but I don't believe that most of the Nash Icon stations are on the panels for Mediabase and Billboard anymore (Nash Icons stations don't play enough current music to be on the panels). So this "22" number only includes stations whose airplay counts toward the Mediabase chart.

22 is about what I expected - perhaps 30 being the top end but 22 isn't too much of a surprise.
I'll be very interested to see how this performs in the coming weeks and how many adds come from Clear Channel (iHeartMedia) and CBS stations. I still think a top 30 peak is a likely scenario.

Although they didn't include specific figures, the advertisement included in the new issue of Billboard Country Update says this was the biggest digital sales debut of Reba's career. Certainly not the worst way to return to the charts!

It's funny, though. For some things she's 'Reba', and others 'Reba McEntire'. iTunes has her as Reba McEntire, and I'm pretty sure they also had her last name listed when she charted last Christmas with Kelly and Trisha on "Silent Night".

Billboard credits this song to Reba. Did she drop her last name, or is this a mistake on Billboard's part? She hasn't been credited as "Reba McEntire" (it's been just "Reba") on Billboard for a long, long time. She was just "Reba" long before I started posting on Pulse, even. Mediabase seems to always include last names, but Reba's label and management team never do.

Looking back at her albums, the last album to use her last name on the cover was 1987's "Merry Christmas To You". Her following studio album was titled "Reba" in 1988, and every album since then has featured only her first name. Wow, I had never realized that! It looks like she may have been listed as only Reba for the majority of her period of superstardom!

The other day, Reba tweeted that they don't have any music video plans for the single and that greatly worried me. It appears they have some promotion scheduled, however. They just announced that Nashville: On The Record is returning this year, and Reba has been tapped to perform this song. Last year, only four million people watched the special, but it's better than nothing!

No music video? Wow, that's a very bad idea, imo. Glad she's got some promotion lined up at least. I'd love it if she could also get a performance slot to sing this on the ACMs, too.

I know nothing is a given, but I almost feel that a performance slot at the ACMs is close to one? With it being a big celebration year, her long history with the show and with new material out, it seems like a good bet to me. Then again, what's logical doesn't always happen.
