I've been following this thread over the past few years. I work for Record Research and we are planning to update the Country Songs book sometime next year (2018). I've created a thread here: pulsemusic.proboards.com/thread/170632/next-country-singles-record-researchIf you're reading this thread, then I know you are passionate about our book(s), so I'd love to hear some feedback on what we're planning for the next edition!

We are concluding the first week of 2018 today. Two thoughts about this thread: 1. Are we getting the ultimate update plus analysis from Jonsolo this year? To say that Jonsolo is missed around here is an understatement. 2. Will Kanenrá:ke resume weekly updates on this thread? It's been nine months since the last one.

I can't answer question 2, but I am in touch with Jonsolo and I am expecting to do some work on the end-of-year update that Jon produces. Give it an 80% chance to happen. Or maybe 75%. I am still updating the Whit-list every week but I don't trust the accuracy of my own numbers. But if Jon's willing, we'll get the 2017 Whit-year in the books.

Just a quick update. We (Record Research) are currently working on a brand new edition of the Country Singles book. We will be using the Airplay numbers as the "main" numbers in the book, with the HCS peak position off to the side. For those songs that ONLY made HCS, they will be the "main" numbers, with a symbol designating those titles. The artist rankings therefore will be mainly based on the Airplay stats. I may give a little "preview" of the new artist rankings as we progress with the book. We hope to have it out by late summer/early fall.

We at Record Research are currently hard at work on the new Top Country Singles 1944-2017 book. We will start advertising it very soon and it should be out by August. Here are the current Top 10 all-time artist rankings (with points). We actually found a weeks charted mistake that added a point to Eddy Arnold's total. Keep in mind, that we also are adding points for those songs that ONLY made the Hot Country Songs chart, but not the Airplay chart. Otherwise, all numbers from 10/20/12-on are generated from the Country Airplay chart.
1. Eddy Arnold (12,668) 2. George Jones (12,027) 3. George Strait (11,301) 4. Johnny Cash (9,474) 5. Conway Twitty (9,101) 6. Merle Haggard (9,094) 7. Reba McEntire (8,665) 8. Tim McGraw (8,640) 9. Dolly Parton (8,367) 10. Kenny Chesney (8,097)

Keep in mind, that we also are adding points for those songs that ONLY made the Hot Country Songs chart, but not the Airplay chart. Otherwise, all numbers from 10/20/12-on are generated from the Country Airplay chart. What does this mean exactly? Do songs that hit the Hot Country Songs chart count double, or are you just giving points to those few songs that appear on the Songs chart as if they were on the Airplay chart? Or some factor of points? It's interesting, and I love the fact it's sticking to airplay personally. Plus it takes away a Post Malone type of situation where an album could be released and 8 of the top 10 would be from one artist with non-single songs based solely on streaming. That would really skew points pretty quickly and ruins the comparison to older artists.

The only way that songs get points from the Hot Country Songs chart is if they never charted on Country Airplay.

The only way that songs get points from the Hot Country Songs chart is if they never charted on Country Airplay. Which means pre-October, 2012.

Thanks for all the explanation. I don't keep up with the numbers as enthusiastically as I used to, but I still do some updates. Looking at your top 10, I see George Jones gained a little bit, and I am never surprised to see minor adjustments. I was surprised at the totals for Tim McGraw and Kenny Chesney -- comparing totals I can see * your update for Tim gives him 8640, but I have him with 8310. In other words, you have Tim almost up to Reba's total whereas I have him barely ahead of Dolly. * your update for Kenny gives him 8097, but I have him with 7953, just barely outside the top 10. With 2 active songs in the top 10, he will easily pass Webb Pierce in June or July of this year. I just wanted to confirm that your somewhat surprising totals mostly reflect the Hot Songs rule changes. I don't see any other way I can be this far off, especially on Tim's updated total. If that's true, then I wonder if Taylor Swift's total is going to drop quite a bit on your new list -- I have her at #117 with 2672 points (and an active song that is still gaining), but I would think you have cut some of her Country Songs points if you're following these new rules. It's nice to know that you're still determined to get everything right.

Tim McGraw and Kenny Chesney both have a handful of HCS only hits. We also give them full credit for songs they were featured on (such as "Lovin' Lately" and "May We All").
Taylor Swift ranks at #99 all-time. Of course, she had 9 HCS only hits mixed in there. However "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" now has a rightful peak of #13, rather than 10 weeks at #1!
BTW, the computer generates the points. I did a spot-check of several artists by hand to make sure the totals are 100% correct.
We also corrected a few errors from the previous editions, thus some artists (like Eddy Arnold mentioned above) have had their points adjusted accordingly.
The book ranks the Top 300 of all-time, but I may expand the list here at some point, if I have the time and there's enough interest.
