denverd- didn't HITS have that scenario the Slim Shady compilation? (the SPS total was reported lower than the sales). Surely they must be typos, as... how is that possible? IDR that before, but clearly a typo just weird since they are calculating a range, it would be different. It's just humorous as we adjust to the new calculations. And, I honestly, believe this was the right move to reflect album consumption in the current business model. If an album spawns off 20MM+ in sales from various tracks that should be incorporated into success of the product. Same if people are proactively listening to albums in a different way. These methods all generate revenue. It just wasn't possible 15 years ago.

Relevance always matters. Pure album sales aren't representing the albums that are generating the most amount of money, so they added SEA/TEA to make up for that, and now the charts refect the most successful albums of the tracking period.

Relevance matters because Billboard is first and foremost a trade magazine. If it is not keeping up with the industry and its current business models, music professionals (its target demo) have no reason to subscribe.
The fact that we as music fans pay attention to Billboard doesn't change the fact that who they are writing to is not us.

www.billboard.com/articles/columns/chart-beat/6443623/mark-ronsons-uptown-special-top-10-debutMark Ronson's 'Uptown' Album Heading for Top 10 DebutBy Keith Caulfield | January 16, 2015 10:06 PM EST Also aiming for a high debut: those darn Kidz Bop Kids. After a couple of sleepy weeks on the Billboard 200, the chart is about to come alive thanks to a likely new No. 1 and multiple top 10 debuts. As previously reported, Meghan Trainor's Title is on course to zoom to the top of the list, with industry sources projecting it to launch with over 200,000 units. The Billboard 200 chart ranks albums based on their overall consumption. That overall figure combines pure album sales, along with track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). Title might sell over 180,000 albums -- a very handsome number for the traditionally slow post-Christmas release schedule. The new Billboard 200's top 10 will be revealed on Wednesday, Jan. 21. Elsewhere in the top 10, look for the Kidz Bop Kids to collect the series' 20th top 10 effort, as Kidz Bop 27 may start with 70,000 in album sales. It could enter at No. 3 behind Taylor Swift's 1989, which might fall 1-2. The new album features child-friendly, kid-sung covers of hit singles like Swift's "Shake It Off" and Trainor's "All About That Bass." After the Kidz Bop Kids, the next biggest debut should be Mark Ronson's Uptown Special album, featuring his smash single "Uptown Funk!" (featuring Bruno Mars). The album might launch with 25,000 in traditional album sales, while its overall unit figure may near 70,000. (The latter figure will be bolstered by TEA and SEA units generated by "Uptown Funk!," which is currently in its second week at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100.)

196k in pure sales. Holy shit. She absolutely killed it this week. Big congrats to Meghan Trainor! Epic should be kissing the ground she walks on.
Glad to see CU's Greatest Hits set holding up so well in sales. Thought for sure it'd drop like a rock after its first few weeks.

What's amazing about Carrie's longevity is that it is a 2cd album priced around $14.

I can't bring myself to see 196k as a mind-blowing figure, even with respect to her being a new artist, but it is certainly a great start. Damn this declining sales climate!
Loving Taylor's consistency (and the fact she outdid estimations). Sam and Ed are longevity kings it seems. :)

Kat Dahlia did better than I had expected.
Was Maroon 5 discounted? That jump couldn't just have been from the Sugar video.

^Sales were 7k last week.
It's not that big of a jump from 7k to 21k in sales.
I don't know if it was discounted but the Sugar video seemed to have worked.

I don't see how anybody couldn't see these as great sales. The girl who released "All About That Bass" and was predicted to follow the same trajectory as Carly Rae Jepsen (including having her album release date pushed back) just released her debut album in January of all months and scored a near-200k debut. That's wonderful.

I agree. Based on the performance of similarly situated new artists in 2014, a 200k debut is amazing. She's sold more in her opening week than most debut artists with hits in 2014 have sold collectively. Magic! opened with 36k. Charli XCX opened with 29k, Tove Lo had 19k.

Megan's sales are pretty mind-blowing for me. We have seen new artist after new artist after new artist after new artist struggle to sell anything significant even with huge promo and #1 hits. This number is also more than Teenage Dream opened with first week (Katy on her second album with tons of hits behind her and unbelievably massive promo) and on par with what Rihanna has done with most of her albums (considered one of the biggest pop stars of the last decade with crazy amounts of promo, recognition, and airplay supporting her). And she is doing it as a new artist in January in 2015 with continued sliding album sales. Beyond impressive, really.

Regarding what you say about her and new artists, imo, I never saw her following that path because I have stated before that what worked in her advantage that her label built a great image for her to sell.

Meghan sales are really good in a month usually wihtout big sellers. Now time will tell if she is able to pull an In the lonely hour and have decent sales week after week for a good while, because that's what will make the difference between good and great and will help to establish herself. of course if she is able to pull more hits from the album, i think she will sell a good bunch of albums. Shee needs to carefully select her singles, and it will be a good idea to distance a bit for the doo up sound for a while (if she is able to pull a totally different sound single and have success with it it will pave the way for a long career)

No one was predicting that Meghan Trainor was going to have these kinds of numbers when she first debuted. The people saying that they don't find this all surprising, please provide examples of your posts written back at her start stating that fact. I remember clearly that there was quite a few people instead predicting that she was just a one hit wonder with a novelty song. Therefore yes, her sales numbers for her album is surprising. Let's compare her debut sales of close to 200,000 to Ariana Grande's album sales, after having a hit song out and being around a couple years prior, of 169,000.
Trainor's sales are impressive considering the erosion in album sales that's been happening and I do not understand the comment that you need 500,000 in sales to be impressed? Who's doing that other than the select few established artists? For a new artist to not only have a hit song but to also sell this well---that's impressive.

200k is a number of a big star, clearly her image is spot on. It doesn't guarantee a great career in the long run but guarantees a great 2015 for her.

I don't understand why other posters find it hard to believe that some posters were not shocked by her numbers. I mean some people follow the artists' development quite closely and that can determine sales quite easily, at times. I said before that I don't listen to her music, but if I did I would be easily persuaded to purchase it due to how she comes across as a human with a personality that is marketable to the masses. Also, I even had friends who didn't know her name, but would say, "I like that big girl who sings that Bass song" so she is definitely not a faceless artist with a huge hit. There is interest in her because she comes across "different". Oh sorry, this post wasn't directly toward you.

There is interest in her because she comes across "different". I agree with those saying they have developed her sound and image nicely, and that she's far from faceless. However, the evidence and example you provided could not have been worse. Isn't that, when people know the song but not the singer, the definition of faceless? I mean, those who don't know her name clearly have not taken the time to look her up, ultimately rendering her faceless. Nonetheless, like I said, I too feel they have done well with her. I can only hope that Carly's team has learned some lessons from them for when she returns this year.

I even had friends who didn't know her name, but would say, "I like that big girl who sings that Bass song" so she is definitely not a faceless artist with a huge hit. No, because you don't need to know the artist's name if you can recognize the person by something other than her name (if you get what I mean). I can use my mother for example, she doesn't know quite any artists by name, but she will easily stated a hairstyle or clothing item that artist may wear. So the name is important, but we know image evolves around so many elements and in Meghan's case, she has layers to how people recognize her. It is a good thing.

What is irritating to me about the discussions surrounding Meghan is that she isn't even a big girl damn it. She is average. For the scope of celebrity, maybe she is a bit plumper, but by any realistic/sane standard she is normal. Just effing dead at people uttering "the big girl who sings All About The Bass". Smh.
