If you missed the announcement, you missed...nothing. All of those artists came on stage, Alicia Keys spoke about their "declaration," and they all signed it. Billboard interview with Jay Z: here

It's too soon to tell if Tidal can and will catch on, but it could be a catalyst for other streaming platforms in existence to tweak and change their business models.
While the general public does not specifically care about lossless vs. compressed formats, I could see Apple making the lossless quality files available through iTunes. Currently, if one wants those higher quality files, one has to buy from other smaller digital download stores like Beatport, 7Digital, and Juno to get them, and for the most part, they charge much more. When the iTunes Music Store first started, the audio files were 128 KBPS and they had the DRM attached to it, then as other stores popped up offering better quality, particularly Amazon, they dropped the DRM and made the files 256 KBPS and that's how it is now.
I don't see Apple going into this particular area because there just isn't that much demand, but it could happen some time down the line.

The amount of cringe during that press announcement, good God. All of them signing that paper (was it an actual contract?!) so seriously was embarrassing.
Edit: Also, isn't this whole service going to be thrown to the wayside when Apple launches their streaming service soon? I don't see how anyone can think they can truly compete with Spotify when the biggest company in the world is also coming to join to fight, regardless of how many big names they get to show up to a conference.

What if these artists decide they don't want their music on those other services? It was a pretty big deal when Taylor Swift didn't allow her music to be on Spotify anymore. If it were just those 10 to 15 artists who signed on today who didn't want their music on other streaming services, that may not necessarily matter to those who are not fans of them, but imagine if those 10 to 15 are just the first of many others who don't. Sure, it could be viewed as them shooting themselves in the foot by not making their music available for streaming. The amount earned from selling music is very little already, and it doesn't help that those involved are not getting paid for their efforts. It makes me crazy when some feel that those people making music shouldn't do it anymore if they want to earn enough to make a living, even a humble one. $0.001 or so per stream is almost nothing. And then whatever earned from millions of streams has to be split multiple ways for all involved parties and then there's almost nothing left. Even if Tidal doesn't succeed but does cause a re-evaluation of the way things are being handled and one, that would end up being much more important in the long run.

The fashion choices going on during that whole launch were more interesting than much else.
The premise of this is understandable, but of zero interest to me. Watching it all was a bit of a bizarre ego stroking session and it was pretty awkward. lmao did everyone just sign some blank piece of paper? Anyway, I'll be sticking Spotify Premium when it comes to paid streaming as it sits. I think super anal retentive audiophile types will probably enjoy the lossless quality offered here, but frankly for me so long as my music is sitting at 192 or higher? I'm good. I will say that it will be interesting to see what Apple brings to the table in the streaming game in the near future though.

Most of my music sits at 320, but I used 192 as a bottom threshold of quality because I don't mind it. I agree though about the difference, but it's not enough for me to be put off by it. Let's not act like 192 is as awful of a quality as 96 or something to that level. Usually if I have files sitting at 256 or 192 it's because they are ripped from older vinyl that are too hard to find and copped through other avenues like Soulseek tbh lol.

Reading the interview with Jay Z, it doesn't seem like the goal is to kill Spotify with Tindal. Did anyone say anything about the Big 16 taking their music off other streaming services? I think Jay Z just felt that the artists need their own streaming service to compete for users with the biggies. He said it's not even about stealing consumers from other services because there are so many people that don't stream yet out there. So Tindal is just another choice for consumers. I'm not sure this stunt with the superstars made enough of an impact. People could forget about it all quickly. Tindal has the superstar backing, but Spotify is a brand. Anyway, they only launched the service in the US and the UK. Right now, Tindal is a very small fish and pulling music from other services wouldn't even make sense. No matter what happens, I will stick with Spotify and Deezer. We will see what the Apple service will be like.

¤ Matthea ¤: Not sure if any of these just launched today, but "TIDAL is currently only available in the US, UK, Canada, Ireland, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Finland, Belgium, Italy, Singapore, South Africa, Denmark, Sweden, Norway, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Spain, Portugal, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, France, Austria, Switzerland, Hungary, Turkey, Cyprus, Greece, Malta, Romania, Slovenia, Australia, Germany, Hong Kong and Poland." Not to mention the average consumer doesn't own headphones that would show the difference in quality well to begin with. Even their own high fidelity test notes that you should be using good headphones or connecting to a stereo system through AirPlay or a DAC converter. I just find that rubs against the idea of #TIDALforALL. Something I'm frustrated with that isn't really Tidal's fault as much as it is a fault of the digital (heck, even physical is getting away from including it in liner notes now) industry as a whole is the lack of availability of artist credits on releases. I have a pretty small circle of people that I'm connected with in the industry, but multiple people in that network (from producers/songwriters and journalists to enthusiasts like us) are clamoring for a service that has information readily available on songwriters, producers, and other personnel. I guess I shouldn't have gotten my hopes up that Tidal would be the service to finally include that.

Oh, is it? I only opened the home page and didn't look further since I'm not interested in a free trial. Slovenia's music market is way behind, we only got iTunes Music Store a few years ago. So I'm not ready yet to move from buying music to subscribing and I only use free streaming. Plus, Spotify isn't available legally here yet.

Even if Tidal doesn't succeed but does cause a re-evaluation of the way things are being handled and one, that would end up being much more important in the long run. The labels are too strongly invested in streaming to ever allow a mass exodus to happen. Taylor leaving Spotify was big news because she had a highly anticipated album dropping at the same time she pulled off, and Spotify parlayed that into a massive publicity push. When jason Aldean pulled his music off Spotify, who even knew, unless you were paying attention to this sort of thing. The consumer doesn't care about artist royalty payouts, and no pop star is ever going to be able to successfully make that argument when they roll up to the red carpet at an award show in a bugatti wearing a custom designed versace dress. The labels dont care about artist payouts either, they've already paid advances to artists, they're just in the business to recoup their initial investment in a project.

With all the digital services I already pay for, I'll stick to green. I mean, for one, the marketing makes you want to steal music out of spite. We have price gouging masquerading as some kind of social movement for which lives depend on. Like, f**k off. They should be thankful I'm paying $10 a month for Spotify Premium when free alternatives, i.e. piracy, are awfully convenient. The fraternizing of pop music's elite should be interrogated, if not looked down upon. And if any of these losers pull out of Spotify, I'll manage just fine pretending they don't exist. Most of them already don't in my world. POST. OF. THE. YEAR.

Here's a big list of everything that's wrong with TidalIn case you missed it last night, a new streaming service called Tidal washed up on the internet. Well, re-washed-up, to stretch the pun a little - because it originally launched six months ago. The difference this time is that Jay Z now owns it - he shelled out $56 million for the company back in January. Tidal's key differentiator is that it offers high-definition lossless audio quality, as well as a few extras like editorial and music videos. According to some, that makes it a "Spotify killer", or "big trouble for Spotify". But Spotify CEO Daniel Ek doesn't seem too worried. He spent last night mocking the turn-everything-blue press campaign that Jay Z cooked up. Why not? Well, Tidal almost certainly isn't the revolution it's claimed to be. Let's start with the price. £20 (US$20) a month if you want high-definition music, or £10 (US$9.99) otherwise, with no free tier. That's expensive, especially in a market where Spotify is already criticised for charging too much. The vast majority of people can't tell the difference between Tidal's lossless audio and the high-quality Ogg vorbis files used by Spotify, and even fewer can tell the difference on headphones that cost less than £300. If you want to know if you can tell the difference, Tidal has a test on its website where you listen to five tracks and guess if they're lossless or not. But five tracks is hardly enough for a statistically-valid comparison, and besides, you're a fool if you trust a test run by a company that sells lossless audio. So here's an independent, and far more statistically rigorous, alternative. Did you get a good score? It doesn't matter. Because whether or not you can hear the difference isn't really the point of Tidal. More: www.techradar.com/us/news/audio/here-s-a-big-list-of-everything-that-s-wrong-with-tidal-1289875

That entire thing was pretty much smoke and mirrors. They literally didn't do anything. Once the appeal of the star power quickly runs out, there won't be much more for this most likely.
I'll explore this a bit while I have my trial, but don't plan on renewing.

Everything about this makes me feel so flaccid, yet for some reason I keep following the updates on it. It's like I keep going back to some cute guy hoping the dick will eventually be as good as his looks, and then have no one to blame but myself for the waste of time when it inevitably isn't.
Spotify gets my coins now and I'll stick with that. I think Tidal should have hyped up the video aspect more than the audio differences, but even then there isn't much being offered here that I am not already getting elsewhere. My $10 earbuds aren't going to pick up on the difference in audio quality. If Jay really wanted to get people on board and differentiate Tidal from other streaming services, he would court indie artists and hype the fact that he's going to create a revenue sharing model that gives a larger share of the profits both to artists and songwriters (the latter of whom are generally cut out entirely from the streaming pie so far). He'd create a front page which featured new artists (indie or major label) to give them more attention and make the bigger cut. Not all consumers care, but there are enough music 'purists' out there that I think this is an angle he could have used to his advantage.
But that would entail wooing a crowd and clientele that Jay-Z is not interested in. Instead he's just got a bunch of A-list stars on stage, people who already have tons of money (albeit mainly from revenues other than actual music sales) and are only there for the circle jerk.
