It's beyond me why people make such a big deal out of her strip club performances. A check is a check regardless of the venue.

One would think a Grammy winner would be in a better venue than a strip club.

It's beyond me why people make such a big deal out of her strip club performances. I can somewhat understand the initial shock because a lot of people haven't kept up with her and it was easy to not know that she's even making music still, never mind been doing strip clubs here and there for years now. Or I can see people thinking like stunnedout, she's still clearly in shape to perform and as talented as comparable female singers out these days, so why the is she in some random club when she could be signed to another label and doing at least something like Ciara's current tour. (Hmm, she should actually run with it and make an actual tour out of it instead of just doing individual dates. I think she could pull it off.) I don't think many would know or understand why she intentionally pulled herself out of the mainstream game and that this is the path she more or less chose, rather than what she is doing just to get by. What was silly was the continuous clutching of pearls over it when this is the same woman who gave us "It's All About Me," "My Love Is Like...Wo" ( lapdance, anyone?, the itty bitty jersey dress, the King cover, etc. Mya has always played to her sex symbol status so to be frank, strip clubs are kind of a natural landing point for her and I seriously mean that with no shade. But you had people going on and on like she was some clean pop singer who just hit rock bottom and resorted to things that should be "beneath" her. If she were doing the more typical, but just as small-scale nightclub/local party hosting circuit no one would be saying "one would think a Grammy winner would be in a better venue" - we'd accept it for what it is, which is a once-popular singer who can't book big venues anymore. But no, people were in a tizzy because Oh my God, it's a strip club! People take their clothes off in there! And what self-respecting female would do that? Like I said, I don't think many can really wrap their minds around the idea of Mya actually choosing to do stripper joints.

One would think a Grammy winner would be in a better venue than a strip club. She can and has perform in better venue through her entire career. But people have to realize now Mya is an independent she's not gonna turn down any venue if the check amount is right.

Like I said, I don't think many can really wrap their minds around the idea of Mya actually choosing to do stripper joints. Mya chose the independent route because it was best at time. Motown poorly handled Liberation and it was internal conflict going on with the project from the jump. People failed to realize she does all types of gigs at any venue. She doesn't care. Just last weekend she was in Vegas for the Mayweather fight hosting with Kenny Burns of Revolt TV. As far as her image Mya was portrayed as clean good singer. She didn't play up her sex symbol fully to 2003. From 98-01 only two videos portrayed her as a sex kitten It's All About Me and Lady Marmalade. Most of her videos she had majority if not all her clothes on.

Moodring still slays. It has everything you need from an urban/r&b album.

Great interview. She's so articulate; I love hearing her speak. I felt the same way about Aaliyah.

That's one thing I've always admired about Mya. She's very intelligent and actually knows what she's talking about when she speaks and give in depth responses instead of brain dead answers like some artists.

Wish she would've released this in full back in 2013.

I find it amazing she ha made more money as an independent artist. So very interesting. I just wish she was doing something on a larger scale. Maybe a good rap hook or something!!

When she said I think she was referring to only the music portion aspect because most artists on a major label see little money if they're lucky or none at all from album sales after recoupment. Mya's bread and butter were her outside ventures like touring, movies, endorsement deals, etc. The closest thing she ever received a check from pertaining to music was probably artist feature fee check at most.
I think that's why she said she makes more money as an independent artist than as a major label artist because she own everything 100%.

Love Mya! She's beyond underrated. I was wondering what she's been up to lately. It looks like I have a lot of music to buy.
Thanks for keeping us all updated, M.O.N.E.Y! I love the way you rep for your girl!

"Best of Me, Pt. 2" is still one of the best R&B songs of the early 00s.

Moodring is such a perfect album. It has many different influences/sounds but it still flows very well. My Love Is Like...Wo is a bop. Fallen sounds so sexy, R&B at it's finest. Anatomy 1 On 1 is on some D'Angelo shit. Take A Picture is one of the realest songs I've ever heard. Late is really funny, I always LOL at high school vending machine part. And the title track is FIRE. Brilliant storytelling.

One of the finest R&B/pop albums of the 2000's.
