The Scene: After Lawrence and Condola call it quits, Lawrence sends Issa an Instagram DM.

The Lyric: "It's after midnight and she's on your phone"

Rae: Every season—except maybe season 3—I like to have a light throwback song moment to honor artists I love. Of course, the music has to fit the scene. When Solange was our music consultant for the first season, she started this trend with a Kelis and D'Angelo placement. Then for season 2, I continued it with Jazmine Sullivan and Teedra Moses. For season 4, I knew I wanted it to be Mya. This was the perfect song to foreshadow what was to come between Issa and Lawrence.

Lehman: Before filming, we spoke a lot about wanting to look at some of those classic songs people are going to have nostalgia for and be excited to hear again in this new context. We don't use a lot of classic songs, but in a moment like that it feels worthwhile because of the impact that song has.

YouKnowIGotSoul: You contributed a lot to Mya’s debut album. Tell us about that.

Darryl Pearson: Actually, Mya and Dru Hill were on the same label. Once I did the stuff with Dru Hill, Haqq Islam, he put me in the studio with Mya. Actually, Sisqo and I wrote “It’s All About Me”. Sisqo wrote the lyrics and I did the music. “Movin On” as well, I did about 8 records on that album. “Keep on Lovin Me” had Missy on it with me. Timbaland got on that a little bit too, on a couple of different songs. We banged that one out in Atlanta.

YouKnowIGotSoul: Did you know Mya was going to be a star?

Darryl Pearson: I think like a strategist. When I heard and saw her, I knew she’d be good. But what I told them was, at the time Aaliyah’s record was fading, and I waited for everybody to get out of the way and do something a little different. I got Sisqo to write “It’s All About Me”, and he didn’t know, but I left him in the second verse. So Dru Hill was hot, let’s leave Sisqo on there and make it a duet. At the time, that was a great thing, because the song went up to number 2 on the R&B charts.

YouKnowIGotSoul: You were on Mya’s second album “Fear of Flying” as well.

Darryl Pearson: It’s crazy because the song I did “For the First Time” changed a lot. After I did it, they came in and changed a couple of things. It was cool but, I don’t feel like personally that wasn’t the way I imagined it to be. It was remixed and they released the remix version. I’m not jumping up and down about that one, that messed me up a little bit. It is what it is.

Looks like her action movie is finally out of "developmental hell" and will see the light of day.

Her show 5th Ward season 2 premiere July 30th. Hope this season garner some Daytime Emmys nods since other UMC shows have.🤞

The only suitable person was Aaliyah tbh. But the amount of disrespect I can't. Mya has enough commercial singles /hits to do a verzuz battle while adding some indie tracks to make a complete the full 20 songs required.

I thought Amerie could be good for Mya since they're both for the DC area. Then again, she does not have that much Hot 100 chart entries as Mya. Maybe Ashanti or Ciara could be a better contender for Mya?

Ashanti or Ciara are the best 'matches' for Mya imo... Ciara more so since they're both natural dancers so we could maybe even get a little dance off or video match on the side. That said, I don't really expect anything to come of this because it comes across to me as Mya responding to someone asking if she'd be down for it, rather than volunteering herself for it.

The single dropping in September has an International feel and in collaboration with a DJ.

She will finalize 1 of 2 albums next month in Nashville. She did a couple of songs with Louis York.
