Wow, I'm impressed with those numbers! I was afraid it was only going to open around 25k at the highest.

Anybody getting Let's Pretend We're Married vibes in the beginning of Americans? The only Prince song Americans gives me is Let's Go Crazy.

I'm surprised this is opening lower than electric lady. She has a much higher profile now than she did then, but hopefully this sells better in the long run

I'm pressed I can't find a single video of her performance of Make Me Feel on The Voice last night

The performance is receiving backlash for being provocative IMO people need to grow the fuck up, it's not like she was nude or even half-naked.
Besides she slayed hard on that stage, as she should

Where is the backlash? Random fat, lazy, and uncoordinated Middle Americans on Twitter?

I still prefer Electric Lady to this, but the first half of the record is near perfect.

Still waiting for the white Baby Boomers to start dying faster. They're poor health choices apparently haven't worked fast enough. Tell us how you REALLY feel. LMAO Anyway, super dope seeing her put up those number with the industry obviously working against her. The political vibe of this album and the recent and rapid "urbanization" of pop culture in general pretty much shows you why they're shook.

So, I've been holding back listening to this album because she used to one of my favorite artists back in the day, but I gradually lost interest in her over the years. What's more, I've heard very mixed things on this album from the people who supported her since she debuted. I dgaf about the reviews. She's always had critics on her side. Imho: The ArchAndroid remains her magnum opus, followed by The Electric Lady which was waaay more commercial than her debut but the quality and her quirks still menaged to shine through. Dirty Computer is just blah to me. There are 2-3 songs I like on it. I agree her vocals leave a lot to ask for. I'm not here for her releasing an ok album at best, which doesn't justify her long hiatus between releases. I guess she took a few notes from Beyonce on how to cover up mediocre material with groundbreaking visuals but it won't take her too far.

Make Me Feel Crazy, Classic, Life I Like That Don't Judge Me Pynk Screwed Americans
This is a great (and her very first) POP album. To fully embrace her superstardom, Janelle has certainly sacrificed a lot of her old charm here, which was almost entirely built upon subtlety. Nevertheless, the "emotion picture" thing was beautifully shot, and there's nothing wrong with her heading into that new direction.

Finally watched the emotion picture and I was shook!!! It's like she distilled the best looks and aspects of all great black female pop and R&B stars from the 80s to now, added her own flavor, and made something flawless. Also, I hope it makes old white people afraid and uncomfortable. Can I join the movement she's starting?
The music was superb as always. I think there are 3-4 songs on The Electric Lady i don't use but otherwise I love everything she's ever released.
TL;DR - Janelle is perfect and we need more Black Pop like we had in the 90s. Black people just do it better.

Apologies for the double post, but this thread is dead.
This will be me if I ever meet Janelle Monae in person.

She released an app for your phone in which the soul purpose is to delete all your saved playlists/music from Spotify and replace it with her own music. It does conveniently place all your old music in its own playlist, though, so you technically don't lose everything.

I got this album a few days ago and finally am getting around to listening to it. I like how the liner notes give an inspiration of every track. I'm surprised at how pop it is so far but I'm liking it. She really should be massive. I still think she will be.

So that was it huh? Don't get me wrong, I'm glad we got a brilliant album out of it, but it already seems like this era is over. :(
