Her titties are perfect and she can do whatever she likes with them. I just hope this album lives up to the rest of her catalog and they aren’t meant to serve as a distraction from it being weak.

I looooove the whole summery/island/afro-beats vibe she's going for here. And I love the production, throw in a horn section and I'm there, lol.
But it's also a frustrating listen, because it kind of only works if you listen to the whole album. So many of these are more sketches/vibes than actual songs and then there's several instances where she splits songs into parts. Like why separate "Black Sugar Beach" from "Champagne Sh*t" for example? One doesn't work without the other and the other would only be made stronger if they were combined.
Obviously that kind of loose and free vibe is what she was going for. And as is, a super enjoyable listen front to back, a whole ass summer vibe. But she wouldn't have to sacrifice any of these sounds or the cohesiveness if she had fleshed out these songs/ideas more. I just wish most of these tracks stood on their own outside of the album.

This album is damp, sodden, humid, and moist. She really sells everything here and the brevity actually works in its favor. She gave sweaty diaspora with Tik Tok-friendly lengths and hooks, which is brilliantly subversive. Is it as impactful as Dirty Computer? Of course not, but it's easy breezy and sexy and confident and perfect for the summer. Basically, Janelle did what she needed to do. Props. Fun fact: my first listen was on my portable turntable that I brought to the pool, because...well, wouldn't you? I love the ruby red variant from Target. I can't even imagine how good it will sound on my home speakers.

Now on my...5th (?) listen, which is probably the most I have ever listened to a new album in such a short amount of time, but I have now listened to it on vinyl, vinyl + Bose speaker combo, headphones, and my home speakers. This is one of the best albums of 2023 and there have been QUITE a few stunners this year already. It will probably outrank Dirty Computer for me very soon. It's dangerously close.
1. Know Better (My new sex jam. WHEWWWWW. I don't know CKay, but what a great addition. I love everything about this. In the God-tier of Janelle songs.) 2. Champagne Shit/Black Sugar Beach (Triumphant and undeniable. Shoulda been the first single, honestly.) 3. Haute/Oooh La La (...and the vibe just continues, but smooths out a bit into something so sensual AND shitalking at the same time.) 4. Float (A FLEX. Great album opener.) 5. Water Slide (This is soooo sexy and also Tik-Tok friendly. I can't wait to see all the basic kids doing swimming moves, LOL.) 6. The Rush/The French 75 (Smooth and also the ending with Sister Nancy is hype.) 7. Lipstick Lover (This wound up being middle of the pack, when all is said and done, but still sublime.) 8. Only Have Eyes 42 (For a polyamory slow jam, it seems kinda...trad? But, it's pretty and reminds ms the most of Janelle's older work. Best vocal performance on the album hands down and Janelle reminds me of Beyonce vocally here.) 9. Phenomenal (Renaissance, Jr. I like the outro the most and the production is sublime, like everything else on the album.) 10. A Dry Red (Smooth. A nice ending to the album.) 11. Paid In Pleasure (The closest the album comes to filler, but I would never skip it on turn it off in the context of the album, so it's at the bottom, but not a dud.)

It's no Dirty Computer. Like, not even close. That being said, it's a damn vibe. It's a cute little free-spirited summer on the beach in the Caribbean album that flows beautifully together despite its shortcomings.
"Haute" and "Champagne Shit" especially are 🔥

I love how Janelle has fully embraced the sounds of the African diaspora and focused on its heady rhythms, leaving the stiff, robotic persona behind. It served its purpose, but the people need to MOVE.

Projected to debut at #19 with 26k SPS (15k sales).
Metropolis: The Chase Suite: #115, 5.2k
The ArchAndroid: #17, 21k
The Electric Lady: #5, 47k
Dirty Computer: #6, 54k SPS (41k sales).
Considering this had a softer launch than DC, a top-20 debut is respectable. Also annoyed she didn’t title it The Dirty Computer for the sake of continuity!

Also annoyed she didn’t title it The Dirty Computer for the sake of continuity! But, it's unrelated to that album (just like Dirty Computer was not a part of the Metropolis series), so it makes sense why she didn't.

I was referring to Dirty Computer itself, regardless of it being the prequel to Metropolis.

I love the mixtape feel... it flows so well, perfect for the summer months. The transition from Phenomenal to Haute is one of my favorite parts. Champagne Sh*t, Haute, Know Better my early favorites.

I listened to this non-stop on vacation. Such a great album, but I stand by what I said, it could have been her best if she truly fleshed out these songs/ideas.
Did anyone order from her store? My sh*t still hasn't shipped. It's still stuck in "tracking number was created" status and I pre-ordered it before the release date.

This happened to me before, even just recently. The updates on the tracking site don’t always reflect the current whereabouts of your item. The last time I got a message like that, the vinyl arrived two days later. It went from “label created” to “delivered” in 48 hours. So I hope that’s your situation, too.

I'm just mad that it came out three weeks ago and I still haven't got it. Artist stores are so hit and miss.

Okay, so Amaarae's feature on "The Rush" immediately stood out to me, so I have to thank Janelle for introducing me to her. Her latest album just dropped last month and it's another summery, island/afrobeat delight.
Also still haven't gotten my album yet. I emailed their customer service and they were like "sorry, we have so many requests we can't deal with yours." LMAO.

This outrage is so bizarre and weird. They’re just mad they saw boobies and liked it.

Forgot all about The Age of Pleasure. Was catching up on a podcast I love - Vibe Check - and they were talking about her and this album. I've had it on repeat ever since. Not sure how I forgot about it, this album is filled with great tracks. I need to do my due diligence and go back to her older stuff as well.

I kinda wore this album out upon its release, but I am going to return to it because I love it so much. I can't wait to see her in October! It's still gonna be warm in TX!
