The only country song to ever do this to me (several Christian songs have) is Kacey Musgraves's "Merry Go 'Round". The painful honesty in the song and how I deeply related to it having grown up in a town that embodied every word of what she sang hit me hard. The beautiful, beautiful metaphor used in the song to relay this message was too clever and gorgeously written for my jaw not to drop and to go back and hit the replay button a dozen times after to hear this masterpiece one more time.
I highly doubt another song will ever impact me in the same way Merry Go 'Round did, which is why its my all-time favorite song.

I remember the late spring of 1999 I saw a new song on the bubbling under list on the Roughstock countdown chart and was curious about it. That night I heard the ballad for the first time and instantly fell in love with it and knew it was going to be a huge song. It ended up being the #1 song of the decade - Amazed.
What happened to the Roughstock Countdown? I know there was the actual countdown show, but I really miss the chart itself.

Gretchen Peters- "Everything Falls Away"
It's probably my favorite song this year, and anyone who can relate to losing a loved one (which is everyone right?) can relate to this song. It's a dark piano ballad that is beautiful and somewhat of a catharsis for me

Tracy Lawrence - If I Don't Make It Back (literally had to pull over the first time i heard this on the radio - cut right through me) Same here. Fantastic song. Kathy Mattea - Standing Knee Deep In A River (And Dying Of Thirst) (i'm sure i heard it when i was younger, but I never really listened to it until a few years back and it just blew me away). Always love listening to this song. Have you by chance also heard Don William's version he released the same year? I put on both versions from time to time...out of curiosity I would like to hear a mix of the two as a duet version.

I'll have to check that out - though it'll be hard to top Kathy's haunting voice.

Rachel Proctor - Me And Emily I was listening to Y2kountry this afternoon and they played their weekly 'Throwback 30' show, hosted by Trace Adkins ("Then They Do" was included in your list as well, ha). Anyway, they highlighted late June/early July of 2004 and "Me And Emily" came on. I always thought Rachel never had the strongest voice, but she's a great songwriter and man, that song is killer. Easily one of the best lyrical pieces of music on country radio in my lifetime. The last part is stellar. "Floor board is filled with baby toys and empty coke bottles and coffee cups At least there's one good thing he gave me and she's starting to wake up"
Ugh; you never get that kind of heart wrenching on country radio anymore.

Interesting topic. The one that immediately came to mind was Jake Owen, Journey of My Life
A couple of others - Gretchen Wilson, Redneck Woman - such a huge anthem and strong image when it first came out Toby Keith, Courtesy of the Red White & Blue Alison Krauss - can't really pick a single song but just the purity of her voice

I Just Got Back From A War (Darryl Worley) and 'Til the Last Shots Fired (Trace Adkins) both stopped me in my tracks. Same with Where Were You (When the World Stopped Turning) and If You're Reading This. I'm a sucker for anything related to war and sacrifice.
You Had to Be There (Tim McGraw) on a more personal level. He debuted it in concert and you could've heard a pin drop.
Aaron Watson's The Underdog also stopped me in my tracks the first time I heard it.
Life Ain't Always Beautiful is one of the most devastating songs I've ever heard.

"Til The Last Shot's Fired" completely blew me away the first time I heard it as well. Props to Trace for recording something that edgy and different.

Toby Keith - Crying for me
One of my childhood friends had just passed away and I had just saw something that reminded me a lot of her when this song came on the radio. The timing was crazy and every word in the song just fit perfectly with what I was feeling. Now every time I hear that song it reminds me of her and makes me smile.

Holly Williams - Gone Away From Me It's been a while since I've gone back to listen to The Highway in full, but I've drank plenty of wine along with this song lol. It's just one of those songs that makes you stop whatever you're doing and listen.

I doubt many people on this site have heard of this, but I rarely put an EP/CD as a whole after listening to it in one shot on Spotify, but in this case, and because of this song in particular, I did.

The studio version of Those I've Loved is excellent, but this one is just on another level. The production, emotion, is unmatched. If this doesn't make you want to go to a Church concert, idk what to say.
