looking at a different chart factoid..."Riptide" is currently in its 39th week on the Hot 100, yet never reached higher than No. 30. I know it's kind of specific/obscure, but is that a record for a song that never cracked the Top 20? or does this happen more often and I'm just forgetting some obvious examples?

One Sweet Day is not the biggest hit on the Hot 100 ever either True but *most of the GP still looks at most weeks at #1...period. I initially thought LMLYD was the best contender to topple UF but just not feeling in my gut it's gonna do it. Just not strong enough. If it was just sales and *airplay..possiblty. Streaming and viral views are still insane w/ UF which I think will be its firewall. LMLYD did great w.w. and hit #1 in many major markets but I think in the US it'll end up a solid top 3..maybe top 2 hit. Seems UF (besides *still maintaining a decent lead on iTunes) LMLYD for weeks now hasn't really moved much. It's gotten close but not super close. Just can't see (at this point) it suddenly surging for no reason. Again, long as sales and esp. streaming stay strong (and something red hot doesnt come out of nowhere) dunno what will stop UF from possibly tying or surpassing 16 weeks.

I think "Sail" didn't make the top twenty until its 55th week. Other than that the only songs I can think of that fit are "Haven't Met You Yet" (#24 peak/44 weeks), "Brave" (#23 peak/42 weeks), "Come To My Window" (#25 peak/44 weeks), and probably some other ones I'm forgetting.

"Sail" did come to mind - but since it eventually made the Top 20, and it's looking very certain that "Riptide" never will, I thought of that as a different situation ("longest-climb-to-the-Top 20", I guess.) *facepalm* at me forgetting "Brave" - I love that song! so, if those are the best examples, "Riptide" needs 6 more weeks to claim this "record" as its own. even if it doesn't, it's certainly among select company. Wait so when is Rihanna's new single coming out on iTunes? it already is, and it's definitely not a Hot 100 No. 1 contender (well, 99.9% certainly not.)

I fear this Rihanna track will need a video to even go top ten.

Selena Gomez & The Scene's "Love You Like A Love Song" came really close with 38 total weeks on the chart and a peak of #22

Well unless we are missing something it already holds the record for the most weeks on the chart without ever reaching the top 25 (well other than Sail which reached the top 25 in its 51st week, but Riptide could beat that if it somehow reaches the top 25 and in no less than 13 weeks lol)

The funny thing is Riptide is still gaining on pop radio (+74 today, up to #20), and this week it goes back up in sales. Also gaining on AC and Triple A. Would love to see this follow a pattern of Sail!

I wouldn't call it a rule so much as I would call it catering to the readers. What do their readers care about?
It is certainly acceptable for someone to write about the most weeks ever spent below #25 but it is less likely to happen because of perceived interest level.

I know there have been Top 40 charts/countdowns beyond Billboard, but isn't that a pretty random cut-off? if there's a story/explanation, I'd love to hear it (honestly, for chart history's sake.)

It's not just a question of UF though. Sugar is falling on sales & streaming as well. I dont know how much longer the 50SOG songs will last. We're now over a month out from a movie that way underperformed expectations except on the soundtrack. But there's nothing to push the songs going forward either. FourFiveSeconds is starting to slide at radio, but it will be several weeks before Pitbull, Flo Rida, or whoever that guy is that does Trap Queen have anywhere close to a shot at #1. The best shot at unseating UF in the next week or two is probably Rihanna dropping single #2 with a radio deal and a video of her 3/4s naked at the same time. The 50 shades movie has made 550 million at the box office already. It was made with $40 million. That's nothing close to an underperformer I'm talking domestically. It's grossed $164 million of which over $100 m was opening weekend. After its first week it's domestic receipts have plummeted.

I would think any number is significant to write about if there is a newsworthy story. I am not convinced there is a written or unwritten rule that states thou shall nor write about a song that just set a record for most weeks spent at #38 for example. Judgment of the writer, if it is newsworthy in the opinion of the writer you will see it. Top 10 gets published all over the place. I have also seen top 50 and top 25 for that matter. The number 40 was popularized by AT40 and related countdown shows but that has had nothing to do with this chart for some time.

I remember when it got re-released and hoped it would go top 10.
