Well, recently people talk about Mariah & Boyz II Men' duet, One Sweet Day, in related to how the current US #1, Uptown Funk! may break it's '16 weeks at #1' record.
But in your opinion, do you think One Sweet Day underrated today? Compared how strong it performed chart-wise almost 20 years ago, but today, it's not considered among Mariah's signature hit at all and quite forgotten. Even some people claimed its chart success was just a lucky timing, because it's a collaboration by 2 of the biggest acts at that time.

Yes, but I may be biased because OSD is the song that completely changed my opinion of Mariah's music, and led to me to explore her glory days.
It's overloaded with cheese, but I still love it and find something magical about it.
Even if its success was partially due to the fact that both artists were hot at the time, that should have little to no effect on someone's opinion of the song itself.
The same could be said for almost any act that becomes too big to ignore, but that doesn't/shouldn't mean the song wasn't deserving of success on its own merits.
Plus, I can never complain when two great vocalists deliver, either.

Yes, it is underrated. That chorus is everyone.

It's one of her most boring singles IMO. I skip it at all costs and never have any desire to listen to it. The only thing about it that's memorable is the chart life. So I say no.

I say yes. It's completely overshadowed by Fantasy and Always Be My Baby which are now considered her signature hits, quite ironic considering OSD did miles better chart-wise It's a good ballad, good theme, 2 huge artist with amazing vocal, the harmony is everything. It's not among her signature hits but for sure it doesn't deserve to get forgotten. Maybe because she rarely performs this song that people forget about this huge hit

Underrated? No. Virtually forgotten? Yes, but not underrated. I think it is forgotten, but whenever it comes on or someone sings it at karaoke, everyone knows the all the words!

Well to me, it still is good (and will never be bad) although when I think of this song, Can't Take That Away always comes into my mind. But whether it is underrated or not, I reckon these teens could give you the answer (and make you feel old if you're above 19):

It's so funny how some run around and say that [insert Rihanna/Katy/Gaga/male act/etc. hit here] won't be remembered because it lacks blahblahblah or is too generic or of the time, and yet on the subject of this people start to pull explanations out of their ass as to give it some kind of place in social consciousness, where it has virtually none aside from maybe Walmart playlists. This is a Grade A example of a song that was colossal at the time and part of a chain of hits for both acts, but that has been buried by time. Most people would name you at least 5 songs from each of them (well, maybe 3-4 for BFM) before even considering this. 2 decades later, nobody cares about what notes were hit or how long it peaked where, it's just a dated hit from a bygone era stylized in flavors that were popular at the time. I'd say it's equivalent to You Light Up My Life for the 90s, but that's definitely more remembered, if only ironically.

In the pop world its completely forgotten. To urban fans they still remember it. In terms of Mariah overall remembered songs it ranks much lower.
Underrated? nope. Its like one of the most successful songs on radio/sales.
But as Katy Perry has already shown us, #1's mean s**t. People remember songs that captured a moment like say "Fantasy Remix" which is remembered not because it was a #1 song but because it was a song that captivated the public and started a wave of songs that tried to borrow from it and that is where Katy Perry lacks originality and doing something not basic, well amongst every other area she lacks too but moving on!

I think it's overstated that it's "forgotten." The video has over 230 million YouTube views, over 110 million Spotify streams, and over 280 million Pandora streams. Those numbers are pretty solid for a song from the mid-90s (certainly too high to say it's forgotten). I'm not saying it's the most enduring song from the 1990s, but it also still has a lot more streams than a lot of hits from that time.

I'm not sure it's forgotten, but it's definitely dated. Its sound is so characteristically 90's.

As touching as Mariah and Boyz II Men's performances are, combined with the lyrics (at least for a mainstream song), the production is pretty empty and dated and the ending almost sounds like Mariah and Boyz II Men are fighting over the lead vocals. Both Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men have made better songs than this and, without living through this song's success, it almost seems like it was only as big as it was due to two of the biggest R&B singers of the 90s collaborating together. In my opinion, this song really isn't that underrated.

The only thing underrated about OSD is this remix. The only one I listen to.

I don't think it's underrated today. Even as a huge Mariah fan, I've only spun this a handful of times and never seek it out. It's beautifully sung, but I find it pretty boring. "Fantasy" and "Always Be My Baby" have held up far, far better.

Yes, it is underrated. That chorus is everyone. I think it's hugely underrated in comparison to her other singles from that era. Doesn't get that much hype as "Fantasy", "Always Be My Baby", and "Underneath The Stars", but it's actually my fave of out those mentioned. The lyrics just really tug on my heartstrings. ๐๐๐พ

"Fantasy" and "Always Be My Baby" have held up far, far better. Unlike the other singles from Daydream, this feels very 1995, maybe because of Boyz II Men. It worked great in the moment, obviously, but even as a Mariah stan I do not seek this song out/will skip it when it comes on. I do like the acapella remix though. Other than that I really have no use for it anymore.

My least favorite Daydream single. "Fantasy" and "Always Be My Baby" aged far better (and I even prefer "Forever").

Imagine 11th grade me in chorus class trying to sing all of the lead vocals for this.
Yes it's underrated. I love me an overwrought diva ballad!

I never found it to be anything to write home about amongst her singles and even more so in her discography as a whole.
Its a nice solid 90s R&B duet ballad but I have never went out of my way to listen to it. So I don't find it underrated or overrated, it's finely rated.

Underrated? No. Overhated? Yes. I get why people don't like it, but I still find it touching. I do agree about "Fantasy" and "Always Be My Baby" aging much better.

I personally love this song. It brings back so much memories of my 90s childhood. But yes, I agree with everyoneโs sentiments on it having a non-existent after-life. It really was one of those โyou had to be thereโ type of hits. All 3 of the #1s off โDayDreamโ sound very 90s, but the other two became timeless and this one didnโt.

I don't think so. It's not bad, but it was a hit more due to name recognition and career momentum than actual quality, as almost anything either act did then would have smashed. It's a typical sentimental R&B ballad of which there were many in the 1990s and doesn't really stand out in any way other than the Billboard magazine chart statistics.
It doesn't deserve hate, but it isn't really an unfairly neglected treasure, either.
