Ellen helped Ella Henderson significantly, and it helped Sam Hunt majorly as well. It can definitely have a big effect, but it's very contingent on the quality of the performance/song and skew of the artist.
It usually does 3M+ viewers per day, and Ellen has a good level of influence with her audience, so you're definitely not performing for dead air.

i laugh at all the prediction that SYA won't stay at #1 for the week of May 2nd now. I meant, it's still too soon to predict anything but once SYA make it #1 on Hot 100 this week, it will surely explode. on airplay

When was the last time a song without a big release from Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, Rihanna etc. was able to come out of nowhere and sell 2x the next highest song for a second week in a row? Even Eminem hasn't been able to hold up for a second week except for when Rihanna was featured (see above line about Katy Perry, Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, etc.). It just makes no fucking sense whatsoever.

I'm not surprised SYA still has a big lead. The #2 on iTunes is only selling about 150k a week at the moment.

The song was #42 based on ZERO EXPOSURE so the fact that it was that high at all is an early indicator of the song's ability to connect. How did it fly to #1? The movie came out and the video was posted to Paul Walker's Facebook page. It received exposure and the public responded. Because the song is a hit now! It went viral and has people talking. Social media is more important than radio now! Plus, radio is filling in rapidly as well. Everything about it is the cliche definition of an "obvious hit."

I don't get why SYA's success doesn't make sense, it's the exact same as any other song becoming popular. Who would've thought a song from a children's movie would be #1 for ten weeks, a John Legend ballad would be #1 for three weeks, a reggae song would be #1 for 5+ weeks, a white, female rapper would be #1 for 5+ weeks, etc.

The second week in a row that it's about to sell 400k when the song came out of nowhere just a week and a bit ago and it's not by one of those pop divas. This has never happened before. Movie-fueled tracks always have a second-week sales slide (and this often even happens with established artists with a long-running reputation and/or pop divas i.e. Payphone and Problem). Katy Perry's "Roar" I could understand because pop diva. Ugh. whatever, no use getting so frustrated over it. It's still only the beginning of the week so we don't know that SYA will maintain this lead for the remaining 6.5 days.

Why is this about "pop divas"?
It would seem to be about a summer blockbuster movie that contained the real-life death of a central character. The song is now a bona-fide hit. The fact that Katy Perry is not singing it should make no difference.

Just because it hasn't happened before doesn't mean it can't happen now. Take a look at the current iTunes chart. Uptown Funk is still #3 after 21 weeks. Trap Queen (I will repeat, TRASH QUEEN!) is #4. Skrillex is top 20. Rihanna is failing. Anything can happen

I can understand that you're not happy about how this is unfolding, but I don't think you can...rationalize away SYA's success. - There have been plenty of big lost-loved-one/tribute hits: "One Sweet Day", "Candle In The Wind", "I'll Be Missing You", "Together Again", etc. - There have been plenty of big soundtrack hits: "Independent Women Part I", "Lose Yourself", "Happy", etc. - Wiz has had a No. 1 hit before; he's not a "pop diva", but he's not some completely unknown newcomer either SYA initially exploded because of the movie premiere; now it's stabilizing because people are aware of it and just really into it (the additional recent promo, like The Voice performance, has helped raise awareness even more.) I definitely wouldn't have guessed that it would become THIS big, but now that it's exploded, it's certainly not the most baffling chart-topper that comes to mind (I'm lookin' at you, "Laffy Taffy.")

I remember Coming home going back on the itunes chart after Paul Walker's death. He was a beloved actor on a very popular franchise, and this an homage song, the film is big right now, the combination of rap and singing chorus generally works well (on sales and airplay) and Whiz had a good bunch of hits before this. With all that i don't think it's that strange what it's happening, i wouldn't be that surprising if the song spend a good bunch of weeks at number one

As happy as I am to see fresh blood at #1 for the first time in 2015, I really hope the pot stirs again within a month or so. Of course there's still Taylor, but music is cyclical and now we're heading into new directions. Male-driven songs are starting to dominate again. There will always be a Meghan Trainor or Lorde, but look at Blurred Lines, Happy, Uptown Funk…men are back on top for now.

But other than Justin Timberlake and Bruno Mars (and at a stretch - Jason Derulo) there aren't very many major pop male solo artists right now.
