So it seems since the 90s the reigns of huge songs have been pretty consistent each decade. I didn't realize we'd only had 4 10+ weekers this decade so far. I think I still lump everything since 2000 together in my head.

I must confess when I signed up on Pulse I tought the Gary of this forum was Gary Trust xD He isn't...? Well I feel stupid now. This week will be very interesting, I say. Goodbye should finally chart (and fall off straight away seeing as sales are falling again and radio has dropped it). FourFiveSeconds should drop from the top 10, and it'll be a fight between Chains, Shut Up and Dance, Want To Want Me and Somebody to get the highest spot. Plus the whole See You Again and Uptown Funk fight. Worth It should get Fifth Harmony their first proper top 40 hit (if you exclude Sledgehammer)

Take it from someone who grew up in the 70s and 80s:
Radio stations WERE different back then; They really DID only play the biggest hits for three months and then the songs were gone, replaced by the follow up. You had occasional recurrent play, but most of those song spaces were filled by new songs. Your local Top 40 - for example - would play about 6 new (important) songs every week. That is why a song spending 6 weeks - or 8 - or 10 at #1 was such an incredible, almost miraculous event.
So it wasn't so much that pre Soundscan radio station reports were THAT inaccurate (they were for other reasons) ... radio just moved faster than it has the last three decades. And the reason they suddenly moved so slowly was because of research, and PDs started seeing Nielsen data, which showed them that it was OK to hold onto songs longer. This mutated into the monster that is radio NOW.

This mutated into the monster that is radio NOW. I think we've seen radio ease back slightly on this in recent years, particularly compared to...let's say from the later 90s through the 2000s. Particularly in the 2000s, with 30+ -week chart runs quite common, and without recurrent rules many of those would have extended to 40+.

Also, before 1991 I believe Billboard only used top 40 for the airplay component of the Hot 100, which has shorter chart lives per song than if all radio formats for a song are to be amalgamated together.

Well the weekend is coming to an end so UF is crashing as expected...what I don't really understand is that SYA isn't crashing harder. I'm guessing that it will start tomorrow when the movie hype will legit start to die down. For this week, it really comes down to just how much SYA sold and how much of the video views are from the US, as well as what formula Billboard will use. It's gonna be close, but it looks like SYA will probably take it this week unless somehow less than 20% of the views are from outside the U.S. or something which is doubtful. SYA could can make all the difference in terms of whether or not UF beats/ties the record :(

"See You Again" debuts at #22 in the UK on streaming alone, so international streams will definitely eat a chunk out of VEVO numbers. It's still such a small amount considering the song's popularity and the enormity of the US market. I'm guessing about 60% of the views are US based.

not sure if this has been mentioned but if in fact See You Again replaces Uptown Funk it would be the 2nd time that a song with Wiz replaced a Bruno song . back in 2011 Black And Yellow replaced Grenade .

Before 1998. Prior to 1998, the Hot 100 Airplay panel consisted of just Mainstream Top 40 (Pop), Rhythmic Top 40, Adult Top 40/Hot AC, AC, and Alternative/Modern Rock. The week ending December 5, 1998 is when the rest were added. Pretty sure I remember reading about when a couple of the other formats besides Pop were added in one of the other mid-90s issues, I just can't think of when it would've been. The Top 40 "splinter" formats Rhythmic and Adult weren't really recognized until the 90s, and Alternative didn't begin to emerge until the late 80s...so, there's that. December 5, 1998 issue of Billboard - Page 129, near the bottom, explains the changes.

Interesting lol I didn't even realize that... actually it was replaced more than once .first by Katy and then Britney and the final time by Wiz. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Billboard_Hot_100_number-one_singles_of_2011

Do videos of live performances count toward streaming? I'm not sure. I was under the assumption it was. If it's not, the Ellen performance is going to give it a nice 3rd week sale also. Have performances on Ellen been known to boost sales?

I can see her show helping an unknown/newer artist just because of exposure.

The movie itself still being #1 is a possibility or perhaps, the song itself is becoming a hit.
