How did this get an hourly deal but didn't break the top 50 on MB? I love this song! I was listening on Spotify and right after it came "Alcohol" by Brad Paisley...and you wouldn't have even known we're 10 years in the future. Thank the heavens for releasing this wonderful song. I don't think this got an hourly deal. Sure iHeartRadio premiered it but I didn't hear anything else about it and it would have made the MB top 50 by now. I agree about this song being a throwback to about 10 years ago. The production has a 2015 feel to it but the melody and lyrics is definitely something that I expect to hear back in 2005. "Barn burners, nail biters" is another great lyric. This entire thing is lyrical gold. Yes, we've had football centric songs before, but the Henningsens did a superb job writing this particular one.

Hoping they write some more brilliant songs like this. I have no complaints about this one. I wish the steel guitar was louder, that's all. In regards to the premiere, I heard it at 5pm and then again at 7pm (wasn't listening at 6) so I just assumed it was hourly, on the hour. That was also the station that Broadway said he couldn't play it yet. Weird, I suppose. Heard it again today on the same station, though.

I've always liked The Henningsens as songwriters. They come up with such quirky stuff that it's always at least different than what you'd expect. As for this song, I agree that it does feel a bit like a "throwback". Heck, I don't even care much for sports, but hearing a song like this brings a smile to my face as it is pretty different for a country single in 2015

I echo the sentiments of the steel guitar though, as I think that could be said about many songs on country radio. I don't have an iHeartMedia station anywhere near when I live (WYRK is Townsquare Media), so I can't comment on if this was in fact played hourly on most iHeartMedia stations (the Broadway thing was pretty odd). I'm sure we'll get helped out though by others who do know. Personally I wish this one (or any song for that matter) would stay away from any hourly deal. I remember when these started, they were a big deal for the superstars that got them, and they were once in a great while. Now they seem to happen every other week with these "mini" deals where songs by Jake Owen and Hunter Hayes debut in the top 40-45 on MB and then they suffer the 8th day hangover. If there was allure for these things in the first place, I can safely say it's long gone as they have definitely jumped the shark. Edit: @nickv1025 This definitely got some iHeart treatment as 15 of this song's 16 adds were from iHeartMedia owned stations. I don't know the parameters surrounding exactly how much airplay it received, but this definitely got an iHeart deal.

As a huge football fan, there's definitely something romantic about the small football-loving American town that Billy captures in "Drinkin' Town With A Football Problem". The nostalgia for the "former glory" added with everyone gathering for a common purpose no matter your wealth, status, or beliefs is such a staple of what many believe to be small-town America. Billy really focuses on the inclusiveness of the sport and town; even if you're not a football fan, you attend the games, root for your school, and relive memories with friends and strangers alike. I think that's a big reason why this is gonna be a big fall hit. It's a football song for people who don't like football too.

There are people out there who don't like football? Well the Super Bowl is always the most-watched broadcast of the year, so football is clearly VERY popular. But there are people who have no interest in football or sports in general. In my recent high school football experience, people who don't like football still attended and cheered on their team. I think this song appeals to those non-football fans as well. It focuses on the community and nostalgic aspects of the sport that have a broader appeal than the specifics of the sport ("The Boys of Fall" by Kenny Chesney) that might not appeal to them.

How did this get an hourly deal but didn't break the top 50 on MB? This only got a mini 'deal', maybe only on select iHeartMedia stations (not all of them) and/or once every two hours instead of each hour, or something like that. It looks like almost every iHeartMedia station started to play it on Monday, but a few of them have 'only' played it 6 times so far this week (2 days) so that certainly doesn't equate to hourly spins on all iHeart stations. A few of the others have played it as many as 12-18 times in the 2 days that it's been at radio. Taking a look at the starters on AllAccess; almost all of those 50 stations are iHeartMedia ones. I added up the audience, and Billy's at nearly 3.5 million already, with 449 spins spread out over those 50 stations. I'd guess that between 2.5 and 3 million of Billy's audience came Monday, with probably the rest coming yesterday. With around 450 total spins and that much audience, I'd wager we'll see him crack the Mediabase top 50 within the next day or two, and he's easily on pace to debut in the Billboard top 40 on Monday. We can see further proof of that from the Billboard RTT: Country No.1 Florida Georgia Line Sippin' On Fire +35650 Billy Currington Drinkin' Town With A Football ProblemThat's 3.565 million in just 2 days. I'm assuming gains of 400-600k per day for the rest of the week, and that'll easily get him into the Billboard top 40. On the current chart, Lady A is at #38 with 5.361 million in audience, and then #39 is the Eli Young Band with just under 4.5 million in audience. My guess is that Billy will slot into that gap, but of course it'll be easier to project when I see what the RTT looks like tomorrow, and after Billy appears in the Mediabase top 50 as well.

I'm not crazy about it (basketball all the way!) but I also know what it's like to go watch a night high school game under the lights in the fall and I think that's what this song really captures.
The song is as much about a community as it is about football or drinking. It's got a great feel and most importantly it isn't overproduced.
Actually, I think MOST importantly is that someone decided this would be a good radio single in this current environment. That's a win.

Im starting to think this R&B "Cure" Nashville is using to get over the Bro-Country blues is actually worse than the illness. I came to that conclusion about the time I first heard Thomas Rhett's "Crash and Burn". I always felt Bro-country was always going to be a short lived movement because by and large it lacked substance. This new movement though has much more substance (maybe not what you or I would call substance, but by 2015 standards...) and is far more dangerous. Billy has seemed to dive head first, and there is some downright awful sounding music on this album. I nearly threw my headphones off when he starts rapping on "Soundtrack" I don't think this song is particularly good, but at least it sounds good and has a pleasant melody.

The thing about bro-country was that it at least incorporated some aspects of country music instrumentation into the songs. Used some real drums, dobros, steels, maybe even a fiddle.
This R&B stuff is just off the path completely.
The only qualification for country now is that you have a southern accent.

The recent trend maybe, but there's been soulful R&B flavored country songs in the past that worked really well; a couple examples being Billy's own "Must Be Doin' Somethin' Right" and James Otto's "Just Got Started Lovin' You." But neither of these recent trends work for the benefit of country music and I can't wait for both trends to (hopefully) die a horrible death.

Love it! Billy Currington is one of the most underrated male singers of the last decade.

Is it just me am I hearing more country on Billy's new record then most are giving credit for? Oh well good stuff from him. I personally don't mind the Country R&B/Soul direction as of late.

Still not in the Mediabase top 50, but he's got to be close. The Billboard RTT shows that Billy is up to 3.8 million, which means that he's only gained about 250k over the last 2 days. I was thinking he might do about 400-500k a day for the rest of the week, but that was too high. His numbers over the last 2 days are somewhere in between what Hunter Hayes' "21" and Jake Owen's "Real Life" gained in the days following their "world premieres".
I'm still thinking that this song will debut close to the top 40 on Billboard. Jana Kramer and Mo Pitney are having decent weeks, but Eli Young Band isn't; I can't imagine EYB improving much (if any) on its 4.5 million total from Monday's Billboard chart, and I think Billy might wind up somewhere close to that.

After listening to this a few more times, I think this will end up being one of the biggest hits of Billy's career. It has an anthem type style that I think will really end up pleasing a ton of people out there and with him coming a #1 single, all the signs are there for another big hit. This should peak in September/October, which is picture perfect and Mercury likely dreamed of this "first two singles" scenario months ago.
Heck, this song sounds great right now in summertime weather, so the timing is fantastic.

I think this will sell strong and steadily thru the summer and then get a nice bump up once high school, college and pro football start.

"Drinkin' Town With A Football Town" debuts at #50 on MB this week.
It should debut in the top 40 or close to it anyway, on Billboard...

You're right, it really is bad. You can see white parts left behind around the outline of his hair and his arm looks like it's got pieces bitten out of it.

Are you talking about the pic in the opening post of the thread? Because that's not the official single cover. That's just one that Matt mocked up. Mercury didn't (or at least hasn't so far) make a single cover for this song. All they sent out was this image: (Quite a few UMG releases get that standard CD Pro image; in this case, there's always the chance that they'll draw up some official artwork at a later date)

Oh I see. That's unfortunate considering his mock jobs aren't usually half-bad. I'd take the CD pro cover though over the alternative in the opening post.

Well, Brothers Osborne screwed up my top 40 prediction for Billy > lol. Brothers Osborne lost about 150k on MB for the week, yet somehow gained 611k on tonight's BB chart to finish just ahead of Jana, Mo, and Billy (I'm not complaining though as I like all 4 songs). Jana gained just under 500k and Mo gained just under 700k. Billy of course started with 0 and gained 4.231 million, and he debuted at #41. And of course Billy will have a negative update tomorrow since his big first day (June 1) will fall out of the rolling 7-day numbers, but don't let that fool you--this one is off to a great start.

Yeah, this is doing very well so far. It will lose airplay tomorrow, but I think it will still gain on next week's chart, considering that its first day wasn't as inflated as it could have been.
I do like the song, and see it as a refreshing change of pace on today's radio, but I don't think that it would've stood out quite as much if it was released about 10 years ago. I like Billy's version well enough, but I can't help but wonder what it would sound like if Kenny Chesney had gotten it. I have a feeling that I'd like it a lot more.

Brothers Osborne can screw things up all they want as that continues to be my favorite song charting. As has been said though, "Drinkin' Town With A Football Problem" has nothing to worry about (other than the hangover from the iHeart debut) and I fully expect this to get Billy to #1 again.

And I'd like it a whole lot less, probably not at all, haha. The only artist I can think of listening to this that I feel it may have elevated it even further would be Toby Keith, imo.

Am I the only one who hears OutKast's: "Hey Ya!" in Billy's song at about 1:24 / 1:28 / 1:32? It's pretty much 1:1 the same. Just saying

If it means anything at all, the only new Summer Forever songs Billy played last night were "Don't It" and "It Don't Hurt Like It Used To". Maybe the latter will be a third single if they can fit it into the schedule? I sure hope so.
Thought it was a bit odd he didn't play this one, as it's trying to gain traction. Man is he good live, though.
