I think what they really want her to be is the female The Weeknd. They wouldn't have her recording songs like "Player" & "Superlove" though. I mean, she is essentially the female Weeknd and that's what she should have been marketed as. It's not too late I suppose, but she'll need a really big single to take off. Maybe a song on a soundtrack to a huge movie like "Earned It" on 50 Shades. "Player" is still a gem and she killed "Superlove" video. My only worry for her got blown away after she put out this mixtape/full-length project. As long as she knows where her root is I'm totally fine with her exploring a more commercial pop sound.

I hope the release of Joyride won't take years.

This was a great move Tinashe.
I'm just glad she got something out. Her mixtapes have always been great. She truly doesn't have to do the traditional route of releasing music. If she is able to find a way to make her music and work profitable, then hopefully she can continue to write, tour, and record without the messiness of RCA.

This was a great move Tinashe. Yeah, totally. Gives her agency/independence again after a year of clearly being at the mercy of RCA, which is not a good look for someone so creative and nimble musically.

Gives her agency/independence again after a year of clearly being at the mercy of RCA, which is not a good look for someone so creative and nimble musically. They've been holding her back. There's so much she's capable of. I know her focus is the music, I just wish there was a way for her to release and market herself better. Give her exposure to more audiences. The talent is there, the material is there. Only thing that isn't is label support.

I really don't think the label knows what to do with her, because mixtape Tinashe seems so much more polished and memorable than superstar Tinashe. Neither seem really marketable right now, though, but that can be fixed. The talent and drive is there. The biggest issue for her is that the label hasn't crafted her a particularly interesting/marketable identity aside from "hot black girl".
The mixtape is getting her a ton of (well deserved!) positive buzz, she just needs a breakout hit [2]. 'Player' could've been it but the label dropped the ball, didn't they?

At this point, her core has proven to support her. What they need is something that reminds the 2 On audience she exists.

Bruh. Why ain't yall tell me Company was fiyah Her performance on Wonderland actually ruined the album mixtape version for me a little bit. It's still hot, but the live version has a small switchup near the end that takes the energy to the next level.

If I would be her boss I would say to her that she should make an album that she loves and she can decide 4 singles and I will try to push it.

100% get the impulse of signing a deal and aiming for the top, but this girl never needed to go major. She had the buzz and she kills it from the writing to the stage almost every time. She would have benefitted so much from coming out as the R&B Chance instead of going the traditional way and selling herself as, like, the new Mya. The different parts of her persona don't all gel together well in presentation, which is very important. It's unfortunate to say this, because it's an area of great strength and training for her, but the part that seems the most tacked on is her dancing side. Not to say that choreo is something that should be avoided, but the whole high energy line formation dancing isn't really connected to the vibe she set up with her mixtapes. And I'm definitely not saying that dancing couldn't be incorporated and presented as part of a solid persona in unison, I'm saying that it is not being done currently. The Mya comparison is not without merit, and it doesn't fit into a complete whole that well. There are obvious comparisons with The Weeknd, but one important difference imo is that his commercial potential was tested by the label in advance of investing in a full length. I've wondered now and then how things might have stacked up for her if her first two mixtapes were released as a bundle in early 2013 after the launch of Trilogy. He was also building up a name on the road too gradually, which gave him additional capital that she doesn't have.

Tinashe had two, possibly three different 'brands' she could have been, and RCA somehow managed to duck and dodge a landing on any of them. That's what so frustrating with it; it took a special kind of neglectful (if not intentional) to screw her up. You can't go from her early mixtape sound to 2 On to Pretend to [not even releasing any subsequent singles to urban radio to] All Hands on Deck to Party Favors to Player to an interminable album pushback to Superlove and think most people are going to be able to keep up with that, and I cannot fathom how anyone working on Tinashe's launch thought the 'throw s**t at the wall and see what sticks' method was the best approach, ever. I know the release of Party Favors was Tinashe's own doing and I suspect she was trying to get back in touch with those people who discovered her through 2 On, but RCA, instead of going ahead with that, chose to pull in the exact opposite direction by releasing Player to pop, an audience she hasn't even broken through to with any song.
1. If they wanted to make her the next r&b 'it' girl then 2 On was a fine move, but then they needed to follow up with the proper singles: How Many Times, Feels Like Vegas, All Hands On Deck; keep it energetic and sexy. Immediately following 2 On with the weakest ballad on the album was not the move.
2. If they wanted to make her the female Weeknd, they needed to let Tinashe just be herself and work on building the awareness. Literally all they had to do was follow his footsteps there, but if more guidance was needed they also could have looked to J. Cole on how to properly build up a following. Aquarius probably wouldn't have had the same tracklist in this scenario, but presuming it did the singles could have been Feels Like Vegas, Bet, and Cold Sweat.
3. The most difficult brand potential was as a pop crossover star, because there was and is nothing on CHR like her music, but I believe there was potential here as well. Make sure she hits up every interview couch she can get on so she can establish a personality for herself; get her on the BMAs, AMAs, VMAs, and iTunes award shows to build performer cred in front of mainstream audiences; choose a somewhat different set of singles more likely to appeal to the CHR audience (Wildfire, a slightly sped up Far Side of the Moon, radio edits for Bet and/or Bated Breath). I think she could have reasonably expected a Lana Del Ray level of success from this, establishing a decently sized fanbase that makes her profitable enough even if she doesn't quite strike gold with the singles.
I have no problem with her dancing in any of these scenarios because dancing for any artist is really secondary, and very easily connected once you figure out what you're actually connecting it to. But if you don't get the music branding right no one is going to give a damn about how great someone is at performing all these disjointed flops...and that's where we are right now. RCA for whatever reason seems to become more and more paralyzed with each choice they have to make and I guess the holdup with the album now is that they've run out of different directions to try and fail to push her in.
Nightride was very necessary for Tinashe to protect the small following she does have and let them know 'I'm still who I was when you fell in love with me,' but we should probably accept in advance that whenever Joyride is released the single choices will once again veer on some other path than what was expected or wanted. *sigh* Touch Pass could and should be a huge multiformat smash :(

That's not really surprising to me. She 'sold' it to us as a mixtape and a lot of people probably continued to view it that way even after the last minute switch from mixtape to digital album. Like someone on ATRL said, she's probably platinum on Zippyshare, smh.

I was expecting nothing major but with the advent of streaming, I assumed she'd at least make a minor dent the first week before it sank like a stone and slipped out of public consciousness.

I cannot leave "Ride Of Your Life" alone. I didn't listen to it that much before the mixtape dropped. "Ghetto Boy" and "Touch Pass" are also my favorites.

If they r trying to really go for mainstream dunno we'll see come spring if sony comes correct.
