She worked with all of the big producers and writers for her debut album as well. I'm actually surprised they're paying for her to do it again since it doesn't really seem like they've made much of a profit from her. They must really believe in her.

Ohh I'm glad to read about the change in direction for her second album. And I'm not referring to the genre when I say "direction"; in fact I don't care if she does pop, folk, polka whatever-- if her sophomore is NOTHING like her debut I might start to like her. Based on the music she has released so far to me she's nothing but a glorified flop and I don't get the praise at all.

Tinashe on New 'Joyride' Album: 'Motherf--kers, I Can't Be Ignored'

"I can't be ignored," says Tinashe in the new preview for her sophomore album Joyride, due this fall. The desert-set trailer for the record is as striking as the music itself, a collection of powerful and diverse sounds that showcase a newfound confidence from the rising R&B star whose singles from 2014's Aquarius — "2 On" and "All Hands on Deck" — took over the clubs and the radio while even making a fan out of Kanye West.

On Joyride, Tinashe is out for blood, promising a few high-profile special guests, including a collaboration with Drake she recorded for Aquarius and debuted during her stint opening for Nicki Minaj on the Pinkprint tour. Next up, she'll be touring with Katy Perry in South America and then heading out on her own trek across the globe in support of Joyride. Tinashe spoke with Rolling Stone about the beginning of her new era and a few of her famous supporters.

Why name the album Joyride?

I always had it in the back of my head, but it started to become more and more relevant to my current state of my career. With all this traveling I've done this past year and everything I've gone through, it just really feels like an adventure, a journey, a ride.

A lot of the focus in the album teaser is on being heard, with you saying "motherf**kers, I can't be ignored." What does that mean in terms of the album?

I feel like I've been working really hard this year at developing a fan base, a touring base. I'm continuing to grow, but you always feel like you're a little bit underappreciated, undervalued. Especially for me, it's exciting to have new music and to give people a chance to rediscover me again.

It's appropriate that with that theme, you just wrapped up a tour with Nicki Minaj, whose last album was very focused on the idea of being heard as an artist and person. What did you learn from her while on tour?

With Nicki, I can relate to her sense of wanting to get up there and have her platform and say her piece and be her own person. The biggest takeaway for me was that unwavering sense of confidence and badassness and just knowing that you're the s**t is something that I admire.

What's changed for you in the process of making this album?

A big part of it was the focus going into it, which was that we weren't going to make a lot of songs, and it wasn't going to be so experimental. We definitely knew what we wanted going in, and we were a lot more efficient in achieving it. I have so much other stuff going on that we really didn't have any other options!

I think it's also important for me to maintain my authenticity, and I think my fans are going to hope to see that I've recorded some songs in my home bedroom [as had been done for Aquarius]. I made a genuine effort to record certain songs and create material in my room. It was definitely different to [juggle] a touring schedule and a creative schedule, but it's something that I definitely had to just work through and work on and push myself to work even harder and be even more focused.

The list of producers on this album is so diverse, everyone from Max Martin to Dev Hynes. What was it like to shift gears from working with someone like Dr. Luke to someone like Boi-1da?

I have so many sides to me and things that I want to represent. Working with all of those producers is a search to be versatile and being versatile. It's always interesting navigating working with all these very different producers — you have to learn how to work with each of them individually, but that's part of the fun and the process of recording.

One of the songs that stood out to me was the Boi-1da-produced "Party Favors," which goes even harder than your past club songs like "2 On" and "All Hands on Deck."

"Party Favors" is one of my favorites, and that will be the first song that we will drop within the next week or so, and it'll be the first taste of the album everyone will get which is exciting. It's a very in-your-face first impression.

Along with the tour and this new album, you also were handpicked by Janet Jackson to pay tribute to her at the BET Awards? What was that experience like?

Janet is an idol of mine and obviously an icon. She's so influential, and especially as a black woman, I think the different barriers she was able to break down and still be this amazing worldwide pop and R&B sensation is something that is so amazing and so hard to do. To be part of that and just to be part of the legacy in general was an honor.

Choreography and highly athletic dancing are integral to your performances. Is that something you keep in mind when recording and writing new songs?

The live aspect is such a huge part of who I am as an artist. With like Janet Jackson, that was always so important for me in artists and something that I always loved. I saw, in recent years, just kids not having anybody that was fresh and bringing to the table a really, really well-thought-out and entertaining live show.

Especially touring around the world, you get exposed to and inspired by all these different sounds and styles [that] you want to bring to your music so that you can perform that material. I feel like the things I always navigate to musically you can still dance to, no matter what.

What are some of your favorite memories from recording this album?

Working with Max Martin and his camp was a huge honor. I've been a huge fan of his since his Britney Spears days. I loved being able to work with him.

Also recording "Party Favors" sticks out with Boi-1da. There was so much energy in the room, and everybody thought it was so much fun. Those are always really special moments: when everyone in the studio can tell that you're coming up with something really special.

If you were to describe in Joyride in five words, what would they be?

Inspiring, exciting, dangerous, adventurous, explosive!

I wonder what the game plan is here. I'm stoked to get a new album from her (even though it sounds like it will be a few steps back creatively) but do they really think a single is going to blow up this fall?

I feel like this will be pushed back or she'll debut with terrible numbers and less acclaim.

Wow, lead single next week - feels like that came together extremely quickly. This is either about to get the hugest push ever or flounder terribly. I sense no in between.

I could be wrong on this, but I looked at RCA's roster and it doesn't look like they have a lot of 4th quarter releases planned - just Miley, Chris Brown, and I think Alicia. So there's a decent chance that RCA is actually committed to Tinashe's project both in $$ and time...she doesn't have a lot of people to compete with for attention and the label hasn't had any other real wins this year, so I would think they are keen to try to make up for that and wouldn't be burning money on someone they didn't believe in. Maybe. Hoping I'm not getting carried away with wishful thinking.

I find it interesting that even with her doing all these tracks with Luke and Max, her lead is produced by Boi 1da. Tinashe isn't Ciara, that is I don't think she has enough of her own money stacked up to pay extra for certain producers; pretty sure RCA footed the bill on this one. So I don't know what that means, but I feel like it means...something.

Yeah, the reason I find the Boi-1da lead interesting is because I couldn't think of the last time Dr. Luke and Max did any work for someone's album and didn't get the lead single. Ciara's an exception, but since she ponied up the money that kind of explains it. Labels OTOH are looking to recoup their money as soon as possible. Since those two are usually so expensive, they usually get the lead single with the idea that the promotional investment will make the song do at least well enough to earn their money back there. And if there's more than one song it's not uncommon for them to get most or all of the singles. For them to have MULTIPLE songs on Joyride, probably paid for by the label, and yet none of those songs are coming first? That makes me wonder if RCA is about to let this girl sink or if there is so much confidence in this project and how well the singles will carry it that they are saving the big pop guns for later. This might also be a bait-and-switch situation where they don't want to turn off her urban fans right away so instead of giving us the pop songs off the top (see: Usher, Looking 4 Myself) they will ease us into it (again, see: Usher, Raymond v. Raymond).

I do have concerns about how quickly this has all come together because that increases the chances of her being handed something that was already lying around. But I know in a previous interview Tinashe was adamant about making sure there was still some of her trademark sound incorporated into the pop hits. I'm like you, I hope she actually got to work with them on the song instead of just write some lyrics, then go in the studio and record them to whatever backing track they had for her. T is unlike just most artists Max and Luke have worked with - certainly not like their usual pop girls - in that she apparently has an idea of how to put an arrangement together herself, so even if her name doesn't officially show up in the production credits there's no reason for her to only be included in the writing.

Interesting point about the producer/coin aspect. I guess we'll have to wait and see how RCA handles all of this.

Maroon 5 didn't release a Max Martin first single from V and he executive produced that album. Neither did Shakira or Fifth Harmony with their Dr. Luke productions. Her label probably wanted to feel out the Urban audience first before going full on pop with a release so she can still have that audience to fall back on.

On re-reading her interview, I'm thinking it's the latter. "First taste of the album" doesn't necessarily mean "first single."

That said, the song has a cool vibe but very much sounds like an album intro. Urban is a bit unpredictable regarding when and from whom they accept their ratchet fix, so while this doesn't exactly scream 'radio smash' I also wouldn't rule it out as an eventual hit there. Definitely not made for CHR though.

This is pretty good actually, but yeah, CHR won't touch this. It lays to rest a lot of the concerns about what direction she was headed in for this album, so that's good.

Where are we going with this "first song" or "first taste" instead of "first single" for these artists? I know there are buzz tracks, but in this era, I am so confused on how artists are working these songs. I guess we are in that "do whatever" until it sticks or hits

Anyway, "Party Favors" is cute. I actually liked it on first listen while all of her singles (with the exception of "Pretend") had to grow on me, which "2 On" did not hit me until I saw the video of the dude with a cigarette and long weave dancing to it
