"Heartbeat" is cute. I think the chorus is stronger than the verses, but I still enjoy it.

The Yorkshire Times in the UK, not exactly the pinnacle of country music writes a pretty great review of Storyteller. I'm thinking the album is pretty great also. Oct 23 can't come soon enough.

She used red wine instead of beer. Queen of shade.

Heartbeat isn't what I expected at all, in the best way possible.
I hope this doesn't leak too early, they're doing a good job keeping it under wraps, what's her prior history of album leaks in relation to time before an album release? I haven't been following sales too closely lately but I'm still confident she breaks 200k first week.

I haven't been following sales too closely lately but I'm still confident she breaks 200k first week. I think the "Blown Away" era was kept pretty sealed-tight before the release. But when they do these "instant gratification" releases, it makes it very hard to prevent leaks. I hope they keep the rest of the album under wraps until the release, or at least a few days before.

Ok time for some stan analysis: this song is about making love on the countryside. This is also why I think the verses are so much simpler than the chorus. Think about it - the verses are simple, staccato phrasing that set up the moment being described in the chorus. Carrie is describing this moment in the chorus in a very descriptive, stream-of-consciousness way, allowing for the rest of the song to serve as nothing more than the teaser for the big moment. This may be the newness talking, but this is easily in my top 3 Carrie songs right now, something I couldn't say about Smoke Break on its release.
IM SO FUCKING STOKED

I think the first verse is strong lyrically, the second is a little more on the generic side but I really like the "We won't even need a song" line. The chorus is definitely the main attraction here though; it's such an earworm.
Overall, I think it's a great, unaffected love song. Her lighter songs usually don't do much for me, but this one is actually pretty striking. It's much better than "Quitter" or "This Time," for instance.

I have no idea what this is or what it means because it won't play on my phone, but it looooooooks like we could be getting the album on vinyl, too! Yay! She's been killing SITW live lately. That performance from All 4 the Hall still trumps all other performances of it, though.

Carrie is gonna make me broke by the end of the month! FYI it's a video of a woman putting the record on the player. When it starts spinning, "Heartbeat" plays.

Whole studio audience went home with a copy of the album. Not sure if that means they're going home with a pre-order of it, or if it's the actual hard copy 2 weeks ahead of 10/23, but leaks could come if it's the latter.

"Heartbeat" is up on iTunes now.
To me, it's the perfect fusion of country/pop. Some great banjo (and pedal steel too, I believe) in the instrumentation, and great pop sensibilities in the melody. I quite enjoy it. It probably won't be my favourite track on the album, but it's one of the strongest lighthearted love song Carrie's ever done. I guess my only criticism of it would be that it feels slightly generic - as in, I could see a lot of country artists recording it, so it doesn't feel super "Carrie" to me, if that makes any sense. However, her delivery of the song is probably its most interesting aspect - she has some great phrasing in there. Very different to a lot of what she's done in the past.

I'm sorry, but "Heartbeat" is a total snooze fest for me. I like that she's singing a love song for a change and I feel like it does show some growth/maturity as an artist, but I feel like she could've found a better love song to display that on for this album. I think it can and probably will grow on me though. As excited as I am for the new album, "Smoke Break" and "Heartbeat" are really starting to make me wonder if this album will fulfill my expectations.

^^^ I tried to hold off from listening to it, but I did. I LOVE her lyrics and phrasing- very pop/AC-leaning. It's cute, but not very memorable, and I don't want to listen to it over and over as I have with many new Carrie songs.

Here's the lyrics of Heartbeat (Fantastic song)
I love it when we're at a party In a downtown crowd, oh But I can hear you call me baby With the music up loud Red wine, good times No, I don't mind being with everyone else And then there's nights like tonight that I I want you to myself
And tonight I wanna drive so far We'll only find static on the radio And we can't see those city lights And I love the way you look in the firefly glow Saying everything without making a sound A cricket choir in the background Underneath the harvest moon Standing on your shoes in my bare feet Dancing to the rhythm of your heartbeat Oh, and we're dancing to the rhythm of your heartbeat
I wanna feel it like a kick drum Beating faster in your chest I wanna feel you holding onto me And make me hold my breath You pull me closer, my head on your shoulder Baby, we won't need a song We'll make a falling star wish One more slow kiss What are we waiting on?
And tonight I wanna drive so far We'll only find static on the radio And we can't see those city lights And I love the way you look in the firefly glow Saying everything without making a sound A cricket choir in the background Underneath the harvest moon Standing on your shoes in my bare feet Dancing to the rhythm of your heartbeat Yeah, we're dancing to the rhythm of your heartbeat
I wanna feel it like a kick drum Beating faster in your chest
And tonight I wanna drive so far We'll only find static on the radio And we can't see those city lights And I love the way you look in the firefly glow Saying everything without making a sound With a river rolling in the background Underneath the harvest moon Standing on your shoes in my bare feet Dancing to the rhythm of your heartbeat And we're dancing to the rhythm of your heartbeat, oh
I'm still not sure if it's "I wanna feel it like" or "I wanna feeling like."

Her new song sounds pleasant but I'm not that crazy about it. I still have faith since I absolutely love Smoke Break.

I like Heartbeat, but based on both Smoke Break and this track, I haven't been wow-ed yet tbh.
I think DYTAM is a better light-hearted love song than Heartbeat.

Wow, I guess I'm in the minority so far...I love "Heartbeat". Carrie's vocals go fantastic with the instrumentation (which is a perfect fit for the lyrics) and the melody. The production isn't too bad either. I was buying this album no matter what but I'm super stoked after hearing "Smoke Break" and "Heartbeat."

What does that supposed to mean?? making fun of me. Can we please leave CF out of discussion here? (Or if you need to, take it to private messages instead, thanks!) I really have no interest in the drama that happens over there, else I wouldn't be here. Appreciate it!

To each their own. IMO, if DYTAM is a B+, Heartbeat is an A+. It's just so different than anything she's released before, and her voice comes through really smooth. The background vocalist that's harmonizing really compliments her voice. I'm not sure, but it really sounds like Sam Hunt. But, whatever.

If we're talking "Heartbeat" vs. "DYTAM" I think I'm team DYTAM. But also realize that DYTAM is probably in my top 5 Carrie songs of all time.
With that said, I'm really enjoying "Heartbeat" but I wish that I could hear it with a lighter production and maybe sung a bit slower to see if I would enjoy it more.
I truly love the first verse and the chorus. I feel as if I can see the characters leaving the city for the country to be alone (I know that's not exactly in line with the lyrics but the idea is there).
The 2nd verse is good enough.
My beef with the song is probably because I'm such a bridge guy. I was hoping that this song had sort of a long bridge that swelled, like a heart beating faster. I like what the bridge is as an ending to the bridge, if that makes sense at all.
I may sound like I don't truly enjoy the song, but I really do. It will probably end up in my top 30% of Carrie songs. I just feel as if some changes in the writing and production of the song could have elevated this for me.
