^ I'm not necessarily saying that Heartbeat should have been the lead. We haven't heard the other songs but from early buzz and reviews, those 2 aren't even included in the top tier. I just used HB as a comparison to illustrate how a song can propel pre-sales and create buzz and excitement. Renegade Runaway on Friday! So excited for that! I just meant of the two songs we've heard, I think HB would have performed better in terms of sales and buzz. And YESSS!!!

"Heartbeat" is a cute song, but I hope it remains an album track.
The little details feel very 'Carrie-esq' (cricket choir, firefly glow, being alone out in the Country, etc).
It's refreshing to see her explore different territory, and and the conversational style makes it feel more personal, as if Carrie is letting you in on the couple's story.

I don't remember Smoke Break but Heartbeat was very nice. I look forward to the album!

These four were singled out by the UK reviewer, as well. + "Heartbeat" is featured in Vulture's Best New Music column: Underwood's “Smoke Break,” the first single off her upcoming album Storyteller, didn't excite me. It wasn’t because it "promoted tobacco use and self-medication," it was just too sleepy for my taste. It didn't have the same drama, lyrically and musically, that her other songs are marked by. “Heartbeat,” on the other hand, has me thrilled. It’s a powerhouse of a song about liberation and escape, and it's everything I had wanted when I first listened to “Smoke Break." Some of the lyrics are a little bland (“Tonight I want to drive so far we'll only find static on the radio” and “standing on your shoes in my bare feet”), but Underwood manages to pull it off. After all, this is a woman who has built a career out of breathing new life into tired old country tropes.

So according to my time hop today, this was the day that Carnival Ride leaked. As much as I can't wait to hear the album I'm hoping that it doesn't leak until closer to the 23rd.

I don't like Heartbeat at all. Very boring and bland. Glad it wasn't the lead single.

I'm assuming "Smoke Break" was chosen because it's about something different, whereas "Heartbeat" is a bit conventional in its theme. "Smoke Break" is more attention-getting and also sets a better tone for the project in terms of telling stories.

I have a confession to make. I know Carrie will perform "Smoke Break" everywhere during promo week because it's the lead single. *whispers* I hope she performs other songs from the album instead. SB grew on me since first listen but I'm so over it now. It's probably my least favorite lead single and I have little urge to watch it when it's performed at her concerts and tv spots. I don't think I'm alone. As I've pointed out before to much objection, SB's sales, streaming and general buzz are relatively low compared to her previous lead singles, even accounting for decrease caused by the current sales/streaming environment. It's not resonating as much as previous lead singles did. I would argue that "Heartbeat" has received more buzz and has propelled her album pre-sales much higher than SB did. You can now commence raking me over the coals. I'm fighting a losing battle anyway. It's a given that she'll be out there performing SB repeatedly. While SB is "refreshing" compared to many songs on country radio, the song itself isn't anything spectacular imo. It doesn't really stand out against so many songs available out there, and doesn't grab many people on first listen either. SB is a nice song, but too safe and generic. It becomes forgettable rather quickly I think. I wouldn't be surprised at all that after hearing the whole album, SB will be one of the songs I'd routinely skip...

Put me on the list for people who don't super care for "Smoke Break".
In fact, I'm just gonna say it...nothing about this era so far has excited me. I don't know why, but I'm just...meh about this whole era so far. I'm quite confident that once I hear the album my view is going to change, but neither "Smoke Break" nor "Heartbeat" have really excited me.
I think part of the "problem" is that both of the Hits singles she released were, IMO, two of the best songs of her career. "Something in the Water" in particular simply reinvigorated my love of Carrie Underwood, and "Little Toy Guns" too was another one that I can honestly say I'm proud of as a Carrie fan. I will say that I love the Blown Away album, but I'll be honest and say Blown Away was never my absolute favorite album of hers. I was way more excited about the release of Some Hearts, Carnival Ride (which remains her best album to date IMO) and Play On than I was of the release of Blown Away. I felt like Blown Away was TECHNICALLY her best album to date but I don't know if it's a nostalgia factor or what, it just hasn't grown on me as much as the first 3 albums did. And I'm getting a very Blown Away type vibe from Storyteller so far--which is good for her career, and I can understand that--but as a diehard Carrie fan since seeing her Idol audition on TV back in the day, I'm still missing me some old, "classic" Carrie. And I do feel like SITW and LTG were the closest things we've gotten to that since the release of Play On.
ETA: Also, elephant in the room...why is she releasing the one week that she has no chance in hell of debuting at number 1 on the Billboard 200? I get that it's not all about chart position but seriously. She would've had number 1 on lock had she released a week earlier or later.

^ I still think Some Hearts is her best album. It's her most cohesive one and has the right blend of everything, imo.

Carrie rescheduled her CCUSA co-hosting duties to the weekend of November 14-15... which makes MUCH more sense.

Okay, so my cousin sent me an e-mail where you could sign up to see Carrie on The Today Show in NYC on album release day. I signed up and I'll be going. So excited! Also, it would be really great if I could somehow get tickets to the iHeart Radio show that day as well.

Very excited to hear them.
