"Shape Of You" is a great pop song, and much of its hate seems to stem from the apparent disgust and discomfort that a non-conventionally attractive man is singing about sex.
Had the song been given to Rihanna or Little Mix (as it was originally intended), it would be praised among pop music communities, even with all the overplay. The vocal melodies are sharp throughout, and it's no wonder the song became such a huge hit.

Very unpopular opinion: I love Ritt Momney's "Put Your Records On." It's such a peaceful song that has a springtime vibe to it.
Now, granted, I totally understand why some people don't like the song. The idea of a black female singer putting out a song and it not charting well, but some nerdy white guy covering it (he does look incredibly nerdy on the cover art for the song lol) and having it soar up the charts is definitely not aesthetically pleasing. It definitely shows the racism that was (and is still) present in the radio industry. However, I don't think Ritt intended the song to blow up like it did. I honestly think he posted the cover on TikTok and expected it to achieve moderate success among his fanbase, but never would have expected it would have blown up like it did and much less make it to #3 on Pop radio. He's even said that he never intended for the song to get as big as it did, and he probably would have chosen to cover something different if he would have known, as not to overshadow Corinne Bailey Rae's song. He even has a link to Corinne's original version as his pinned tweet, so I don't think all the hate he gets is fair because it's not like he made the cover trying to outdo Corinne.
Moreover, I think a lot people assume Ritt went into the cover with the mentality of "hey, let me spice up this song with my dope beatz!" From reading a few interviews he's done about the song, it seems like he chose to cover the song because it had a lot of sentimental value to him from his childhood. He's shared the song made him feel several different things - peace, happiness, and a bit of calm in his most depressed time. You can sort of see this in the verse structure - the first verse has a peaceful vibe to it, then it switches up between the first chorus and the second verse to be more upbeat/happy, and then the third verse is more depressing, and it concludes with an amalgamation of all three of those to make the kind of jumpy, trippy ending that we get. Honestly, even though I like the song, I hate the third verse and the ending, so much that I just stop listening after the second chorus - but I can see how Ritt was trying to make a cover that incorporated his feelings for the song, which is pretty insightful IMO. A lot of artists just cover the song in their own musical style, but Ritt tried to incorporate what the song made him feel into his cover, almost as if a reaction to Corinne's original. So yeah, I get why people hate the song and his stage name is kinda cheesy (though I'd argue that caused some radio intrigue and is part of the reason for the success), but I really appreciate the song for being a very unique way to make a cover.

that Astronaut In The Ocean song is so bad
like I don't care how fast he raps, you can't convince me that a song with the line "I believe in G-O-D not T-H-O-T" is any better than your average "mumble rap" song lol

As much as I disagree with Gabby Barrettβs politics, I like βI Hopeβ and feel like it sounds good (at least the original version, the original version is a guilty pleasure for me but the Charlie Puth remix is garbage). I also donβt really like Cardi Bβs music that much.

I like Good Time by Niko Moon. I think it's better than most of the country hits so far this year. I think the melody, chorus, and bridge are really nice, but I do wish it didn't have the trap drums lol.
I also think Rapstar is much better than the consensus on this forum specifically. Good hook, interesting lyrics on the verses, and just a good sound.

Doja Cat is the best of the new female rappers. Her voice is actually very smooth and pleasing to the ear.

Today top 40 music/music in general is mediocre. Medorictiy gets packaged as good t and its sells...the bar is so low today and most of every song today is mediocre and generic top 40 trash This is every decade of music.

Gwen Stefani is one of the most polite & overlooked Culture Vultures in music since the 90s. I like her, however can recognize & acknowledge this issue.

Mariah Carey's comeback in the 2000s has not aged well. Outside of Dont Foget About Us and We Belong Together...but even then, I dont find myself returning to those songs often.

As a lamb, i have to say, among her 2000s studio albums, i rank CharmB, EMC2 and Memoirs above TEOM. TEOM as a whole album is just okay. Some songs are just average album tracks. Overrated album? Probably. But the first 4 singles were indeed very strong choices. DFAU is even still my favorite from TEOM era, very underrated and forgotten.

At some point you just have to accept that an artist isn't for you. I'm at the point with Billie Eilish.
I actually like her as a person and low-key root for her, but she is a flat-out terrible singer. Her thin, whispery, mumbly vocals are one thing. But that wobbly, affected vibrato? I CANNOT. I find myself bewildered by her success every time I listen to her sing.

I think Taylor Swift is a goody-two shoes at heart, she looked so awkward during the Reputation era but her sales and success would say otherwise, thatβs all thanks to her awesome dedicated and powerful fans.

Ed Sheeran/Khalid's "Beautiful People" is more enjoyable than most of either of the two's other music.

I absolute get the hate Kid LAROI gets but I honestly think WITHOUT YOU is on par with Lucid Dreams. Not saying they're the same or that WITHOUT YOU is even good or that Laroi is on par with Juice as a whole, but I don't see what flaws WITHOUT YOU has that Lucid Dreams doesn't share with it. Laroi's best song is equal with a mid-tier Juice I guess.

"Shallow" is, at best, a pretty good two-thirds of a song and the mountain of praise and hardware its received is some conspiracy shit.

"Shallow" is, at best, a pretty good two-thirds of a song and the mountain of praise and hardware its received is some conspiracy s**t. Agreed. I think there's a foundation for a strong song in there melodically. But the song itself ends up being patently absurd. It's some wannabe singer-songwriter nonsense. Like Gaga was sitting in the studio thinking "I'm playing a singer-songwriter with a capital S in this movie, what would that kind of song sound like?" It almost ends up being parody.

I've been listening to so much 2000's post-punk lately. In hindsight, I think Franz Ferdinand was the best band to come out of that wave. Much like Blondie during the new wave era, when it comes to a fairly superficial musical movement, having the best style is crucial.

Of the three singles released before Olivia's album, Good 4 U is easily my least favorite. Not because I think it's all that bad, but because it falls quite short of expectations for me, especially in terms of the rather weak-sounding production and Olivia's vocals just not fitting this type of song. Frankly, I think artists like Avril Lavigne and Kelly Clarkson did what she's trying to do on the song a fair bit better back in the 2000s. Even modern-day Halsey could make this type of song work better for me.

Doja Cat is the best of the new female rappers. Say So alone is enough for me to agree with that statement (even though it's mostly a pop song with only one rap verse). In fact, I'm kinda rooting for her (although I hope she can get a new producer).

The early 2000s is my least favorite era for mainstream country of all time. Yes, worse than the bro-country and boyfriend country we have now. So many limp ballads and overly patriotic, pro-war songs that have not aged well at all. There were a few bright spots here and there, but overall I either get bored or annoyed listening to this stuff.
