^ Great picks trebor! I listened to Ray Wylie Hubbard's "The Ruffians Misfortune" again and honestly, it's grown on me a ton. Not one of the best of the year but it's got a solid place in my top 20 right now. Also, I'm curious. Has anyone here heard of the Christian Lopez Band? I came across them in an interview and checked out some of their songs. Pretty good stuff! I'm on the fence about buying their debut only because I've spent a lot of money already on albums lol

Outside of a couple of great ballads, the lyrics aren't the deepest, but the fun factor is really high. "Chick Singer, Badass Rockin'" is my current jam. I'm not familiar with the Christian Lopez Band but I will be sure to add them to my list. Spending time on this board has definitely introduced me to a ton of new stuff.

Since it seems everyone (well everyone who said something lol) is on board with merging everything non-mainstream into one thread, I've went ahead and changed the title to such, so now this thread is not just limited to Alt-Country and Americana, but really anything that isn't mainstream. (Examples: Red Dirt/Texas Country, Bluegrass, Canadian Artists....think that's it... If I'm forgetting something feel free to point it out)

My point is that it will be more easily found via the Pulse search, and Google can better classify it; and it's visually more readily identifiable.

Agreed. Even just alt-country, et. al would work since that was the original inspiration for it, I think.

Have you just created a new sub-genre term? :) What's with the CanOZ and CanUK entries; these will be mostly mainstream and not falling under the alt umbrella, at all. I started to post some, already...

Great thread zack97! I'm just getting started on looking it over so I'll come back around here again, but wanted to comment on one of the artists below. Was given the go ahead to do this so why not? :) I know there's a couple posters on here who, like me, are willing to explore outside of the mainstream country universe. Figured this thread could be a way to talk about those artists and share any albums/songs we think others would like. I really started getting into this type of music earlier this year and have discovered a ton of great new artists! Some of my favorite discoveries of the past year have been.... (in no order) Sam Outlaw (corny name, great music) Great choice...a while back I listed his album Angeleno as one of the best country albums of the year so far and am glad I'm not the only one that enjoys his music. The song below is one of my favorites from it:

I heard this song this evening just as I walked in the door and for whatever reason the lyrics just hit me like a ton of bricks. He is a local Texas artist and I'll be honest I've never heard him before..but this song is just great. From the looks of it he's doing really well on the Texas country chart and is shooting for #1 there. "Let It Rain" - James Lannedit: I reached out him to him on facebook to inquire about any plans to shoot a video for this and he said the funds aren't there yet for one, so for now I just shared the iTunes link for y'all to check out. hopefully some of you like this song as much as I did.

Idk but I think Jason Isbell can be classified here too as Billboard classifies him as 'Rock'.

Idk but I think Jason Isbell can be classified here too as Billboard classifies him as 'Rock'. Yes, he is alternative country and has already been showcased. Billboard assigning genres is always a bit tricky with everything that is not 100% true to one specific core sound.

Wow, what is going on there in the down under? There is some good country music coming out from there. I had to check this band's first album out and it's fantastic. I have to thank the current state of country radio for letting me expand my sources of where I'd usually hear music for the first time. I've been pretty disenchanted with radio for the last few years, and only last year or so did I finally start accepting I was going to have to start going somewhere else to find good music. I've since found some really great artists and songs, including this one. So yea, thanks country radio (you've lost a once loyal listener though...)!

Literally just NOW found out that Whitey Morgan will be playing about an hour away from me tonight. I REALLY wish I could go but I don't have my own car yet, and no one else in my family likes anything outside of mainstream country. Still though, I thought that no one in the alt-world ever would stop into New York, especially near me. Makes me wonder how many other shows came and went here. Oh well, still got plenty of time to see everyone lol!

The Greencards are a bluegrass/newgrass band consisting of Kym Warner, Carol Young, Carl Miner and Luke Bulla. Former members include Eamon McLoughlin and Tyler Andal. Kym Warner and Carol Young are Australian. They have recorded six albums, including Sweetheart of the Sun, which includes this great instrumental track called "Paddle The Torrens." It was written by Warner and Jedd Hughes ("High Lonesome", "Soldier For The Lonely"). :)

My talk with Andy in the "Which Country Album Are You Listening To" thread led me to realize how many cool acts there are in the genre. There's been stalwarts in the independent scene like Jason Isbell, Sturgill Simpson, Whitey Morgan...etc but I thought I would share some acts that I don't feel many people know exist. The Malpass Brothers- "Here In Alberta I'll Stay" m.youtube.com/watch?v=vOisWGDpPnYThe Malpass Brothers are stone cold country, like seriously. You'll realize that after one song. Their latest album is full of covers, but I'll be dammed if they don't own every single song. The Lone Bellow- "Telluride" m.youtube.com/watch?v=aEwxuxWE3rUThe Lone Bellow is a Brooklyn based group that combine country with rock, blues, everything. Their harmonies are extremely tight and their latest album is a treat for sure! Houndmouth- "Sedona" m.youtube.com/watch?v=Y8wifV5RYr8Ok, so they're more folk rock/Americana than country but oh well. That doesn't mean they aren't good! Their latest album is one of my favorites of 2015 so far. Another group who I recommend checking out is the Christian Lopez Band. They are a country/folk group and I couldn't find any of their songs online (not studio versions at least) but I highly recommend checking them out! Hope some of you like these acts! :)

According to his Twitter, Jason Eady has finished the pre-production for his new album and will start recording songs in September!
I loved "Daylight and Dark" but I unfortunately didn't discover it until December of last year, still though, solid country gold.

From what I heard up to now it looks to be totally amazing. The older tracks are pure genius. Will create another entry once I assess all 36 tracks.

Corb Lund should be way more famous than he is. I understand most of his music is more acoustic driven and organic than what is popular on Canadian country radio, but he is seriously one of the most talented musicians in North America. Thanks so much, guys! Corb Lund is really awesome! Where has this guy been hiding all this time... ! :) Posted his 2012 album "Cabin Fever" here: pulsemusic.proboards.com/post/5317580/thread
