photographed by MARIO TESTINO / edited by TONNE GOODMAN What do we want from the glamorous, powerful women we call divas or icons or cultural forces? We want them to want—and in our names get—everything they possibly can. Success in work and love. Sexual pleasure. Money and power. We want them to embody multiple fantasies. We want them to make us believe that exciting realities are just around the corner. It used to be that the great pop stars with fashion and style gave us small variations on one grand theme. Tina Turner: minidresses and honey tresses. Janis Joplin: boas, bangles, and bell-bottoms. Cher: spangled striptease getups with mythic Third World touches. Nowadays fashion isn’t about the grand theme, it’s about juxtaposition, and it’s filled with allusions to movie and art history; to music and dance styles; to iconographies of race and ethnicity, religion and gender. Madonna opened the door to this collage approach. Today we see it in the wigs, masks, and sculpted costumes of Lady Gaga and Nicki Minaj, the restless dazzle of Rihanna’s couture choices. And, of course, in the music, dance, decor, and looks of the ultimate streamed collage: Beyoncé. Read the rest of the cover story and the entire September issue as early as August 14 via Amazon or by picking it up in Target stores. The issue officially hits newsstands on August 25.

On Friday, Beyonce posted her 2013 Vogue shoot on Instagram with a never before seen picture of her and an 11 month old Blue on set.

Her 2013 cover is her best one but this one is cool. Interesting to see where she goes with this next album. The self-titled album was good, but it's easily my least favorite out of all her albums, including her Destiny's Child stuff. Take that back... Survivor was horrible.

Janet Jackson's muse. >:( I think Beyonce declining to speak in public or be interviewed makes her all that more mysterious to the public, and given her high profile, it directs people to her music and concerts as a way to get to know her. However, she really does need to speak in public even if it's one in a blue moon, because there's a thin line between fascinating and creepy here.

I think it works for her. It was good for her to be everywhere at the beginning stages of her solo career but her priorities are no longer playing the singles games/burning the Billboard charts. Her musical image has now focused to making great albums and letting them speak for themselves. Even before she entered this phase, her celebrity became something of a myth so this no-press business only helps it along. She will go down as a bonafide legend regardless of what happens from here on out, though more good music would obviously only help. I'm sure years down the line, we'll get some big extensive interviews/tell-all.

I look at like this Beyoncé will do just enough to remind us that she is fascinating without really telling us anything compare to Britney. She don't gives us anything either, but the difference is that you can still tell like mama Coco Bey actually cares about all eyes on HER and that's why people are. It's subtle, but she is doing the most. In 10 years, we will probably get Beyoncé tea time session but I don't think we'll ever get one from queen of pop Britney Spears.
