I'd say back then there was less variety because the only places you had to explore and discover new music was in radio, tv or magazines, or on the local live scene. Do the sales totals actually include every album counted by soundscan or does it include only a certain portion? I seem to remember reading once that weekly overall sales totals included only the combined total of the top 200.

This week, I will agree with you Mark.  Can't Feel My Face is ahead in all three matrixes over Cheerleader.  But I'll agree with Rimetm that things can easily change.  You see how narrow the gap is between the two songs now.  If there's a slight uptake in sales for Cheerleader or a slip anywhere by Can't Feel My Face, then things can change.

Provided CFMF is able to hold off Cheerleader, I'd say the next number one will be Taylor Swift's Wildest Dreams.  Lean On probably will peak at number 3-4 (although that's a lot higher than I thought it would peak).  Fetty might have a number one if he could just pick one song and promote the heck out of it, but while the scattershot efforts might give him 2-3 top 20s, it won't lead to number 1.  I think Fight Song has peaked (did I see a drop in radio in today's chart?).  Locked Away is probably due for a major jump this week (nice sales), but I'm not sure about that song's prospects yet.  Good for You and CFTS have more or less stalled out.  But perhaps Ed Sheeran might be overdue for some karma after Thinking Out Loud was held off by Uptown Funk and Photograph could sneak in.  Another possibility is What Do You Mean, that new Justin Bieber single gaining support from Luke Bryan and Meghan Trainor already.

The Next Number One?
1.  Cheerleader (sometime in the next couple of weeks?)
2.  Wildest Dreams (as soon as she releases it, lol)
3.  What Do You Mean (3 weeks from now)
EDIT:  4.  Drag Me Down (perhaps when the music video comes out?)

Much as I think Photograph is a great song and would love to see Ed get a #1, it's a bit far-fetched IMO to say that it will be #1. Lean On is much more likely to be a future #1 than Photograph.

Three horse race. The new Ariana, the new JB or Locked Away. I get the analysis of Cheerleader but that seems like a song too much in decline. CFMF would have to suddenly hit a huge wall next week and get passed by Cheerleader on the way down. That seems less likely literally every day. Lean on is going to get some promo help this week but it says a lot that the sales dived as soon as the discount ended.

Other strong signals for Locked Away - digital gainer last week, likely airplay gainer this week and with the video out possible streaming gainer next week.

Not convincing dude! Can't feel my face is the second single and is likely to have a better sell prospect for his album's not yet brought out and this single is definitely the fiery zenith of his pre-album era such that countless promos were done. Taylor, on the other hand, is a multi-platinum album personality and her singles are showing a skid-hitting tendency each after each especially sales for people have already owned the album unless there's a smarty remix that brings on quite a novelty no one is buying ONE PARTICULAR SONG but some diehard fun of that song itself. 1989 has past its prime already and after all is said and done there's only last singles to close it up decently so don't expect that to be a miracle as well.
The Weeknd is not yet released the album and this song is under great care to be pushed forward and he's much likely the rage now than 1989.
Tay Tay is likely to make this song another disappointing vid like she did with a perfect song Style I guess.. unless she brings all of her exs as her cameo this time, then 100 million streaming in one week? Ridiculous.

Timing?? You tell me, can't feel my face in the worst case scenario is not gonna be missing top 5 all right with about 500k points!! What if Wildest Dreams sells 100k tops in a week and 150M Al and a much lousier streaming like 6M (for there's no spotify at all and even the all-out vid Bad Blood only brought up a few wks of 6+M streaming) then top 10 is an uncertainty even with good timing..

Sail spent 87 weeks in top 100 but only peaked no.17 l, why? Cuz' the great AWOLNATION had to go against Royals, Roar, Wrecking Ball, Hold on we're going home,Wake me up, holy grail, blurred lines, the fox, applause, summertime sadness, 23, safe and sound, berzerk, radioactive, we can't stop and this is my kind of night... Such a bad timing! If "sail" was released in 2015 it's definitely gonna be topping the chart for 30 weeks!

Granted, Photograph could have a smaller chance than some of the other songs I've mentioned earlier.  But it's still heading in the right direction and perhaps if it catches a break here (MTV VMAs) or there (timing), it could do it.  Things would have to break just right, though.

I think it's more likely that Justin or Taylor takes number one.  Perhaps 1 Directon (don't know why I forgot Drag Me Down) when that music video comes out.

Taylor, however, got an album sale a lot higher than Katy's and no spotify.. Mainly two factors:

1.  #1, #1, #6, #1.  Those are her Billboard chart performances for her first four singles from 1989.  Taylor has the track record to reach the top again.  The question is whether Dreams is strong enough to make it.  Reportedly, it's got a catchy chorus which can't hurt.

2.  Why does the video have to be career defining?  Point is that each of those videos from that album are memorable for some reason.  Shake It Off was about her doing all sorts of dancing from different eras (maybe she could get some help before she tries that again).  Blank Space has her playing a crazy villain to a lover featuring clothes burning and a wrecked car.  Style has that one guy with two color eyes and the triangular mirrors (alright, that's a bit weak compared to the others).  Bad Blood is about a cross between Kill Bill (the betrayal) and Six Million Dollar Man (the rest of the video is about rebuilding her due to the technology).  As long as it's memorable, Wildest Dreams will be fine.

And for the record, I enjoyed Can't Feel My Face's music video, particularly the last minute or so.  Really captures the lyrics.

I think it's a case of him getting the passions for his favorite artist ahead of his thinking.  Kinda reminds me of that one guy who showed up for a week only to end up getting banned (Zombie Shades of Gray, maybe?).
