And with streaming, does Billboard still give more weight to on-demand vs. passive streams, and how can we be confident in calculating the streaming points when the numbers of on-demand vs. passive aren't reported?

The formula I use is Sales/12 + Airplay/10 + Streams/9. And it fits perfectly with the percentage shares of a particular component reported sometimes by Billboard.

I am not 100% sure about On-Demand/Passive streaming, but even if they are given different weightages, their weighted average should still largely follow the above formula.

It seems as if we are at the tail end of the pop cycle that started with Since U Been Gone / SexyBack / Gaga / EDM. Just like in the early 70s, the post disco era, the Nirvana era, and the Ashanti / Nelly era, pop radio is beginning to lose the enormous cultural influence of its pure pop stars (that are either between albums or underperforming with their last ones), and B-level stars hold the fort down. This has historically led to contemporary r&b filling the void for several years (early 70's Philly Soul era, Bad Boy / Death Row in the 90's, Murder Inc of the 00's,) - Today we see r&b / HH getting a leg-up via streaming and building new artist bases (Fetty Wap, The Weeknd, etc). Will be interesting to see if the cycle continues over the next five years.

Are you referring to SUBG/SexyBack/Gaga/EDM as the start of the latest "pop" cycle, or the progression of it? Those songs/genres are all very different and occurred over quite a few years and aren't necessarily what you would call "pure pop", so I'm not exactly sure what you're trying to say there. I would argue the latest pop cycle started in '08 when Gaga and Katy were starting to become big and many other dance/pop songs became hits, but that's just me. I agree though that r&b/hip-hop tends to fill in the voids when pop doesn't dominate, and would add that rock also seems to take a stronghold.

Progression. Noted Top 40 Historian Sean Ross suggested SUBG as the song that 'woke Top 40 from the 2000s doldrums'. This led to higher ratings for CHR and a new identity that blossomed with Timberlake, Rihanna pop Chris Brown et al, and led to the Gaga / Katy Perry explosion which also dovetailed into the EDM phase. They are not necessarily pure pop (but neither was Prince or Alanis) and yet somehow manage to create / supplement / nurture a strong & dominant pop landscape. Usually r&b (and more recently Hip-Hop) fills the voids (See 1972, 1993, 2003), but often other genres (AC / Country in 1981; Alternative Rock in the mid 90s). The advent of streaming and the dominance there of Hip-Hop suggests the balance is shifting culturally again.

With the huge successes of Blurred Lines, Get Lucky, Uptown Funk, Happy, All About That Bass, Sugar, I thought pop music was gonna go more on a throwback sound, but it seems like tropical/house music is gaining a lot of traction this year.

2009 through 2011 was almost nothing but Dance Pop/Eurodance type songs (Gaga, Katy, Britney, BEP, Kesha)
2011 and through 2012 saw a huge rise in EDM music (Calvin, Zedd, Guetta)
2012 also seemed to be the year where Alternative music started getting a lot more play on pop radio all the way through 2014 (.fun, Gotye, Mumford & Sons, Lumineers)
From mid 2013 til the beginning of 2015, the 80's/90's throwback songs were definitely dominating pop radio. (Pharrell, Bruno, Robin)
End of 2014 started to see a rise in house music that has continued through now (Disclosure, Omi, Justin)
This year, hip hop artists have been gaining a lot of traction in pop radio this year (Fetty Wap, Silento, Nicki)


No matter what the pop radio trend is, you'll always have your exceptions where they still play pure pop music (Kelly during Stronger era, Katy during Prism era, Taylor during 1989 era)

If you're talking broad trends I think jebsib has it right. 05 was also when digital sales were included on the Hot 100. I think it proved to people in the industry that there was more of a taste for non-hip-hop/R&B than they had thought.

I do think that the digital world has enormously cracked open the variety of music that gets traction. There's much more genre fluidity.

2014-15 seemed to be another transition between focusing on established acts and being open to a variety of different sounds. Almost every breakout act the past two years ended up a one-hit wonder (exceptions: Lorde, Iggy, Sam, 5SOS, Meghan, Tove, and the Weeknd). Pop radio seems less concerned about making stars out of the new artists than squeezing out one hit each from them and then throwing them away,

Uptown Funk dropped last week because it fell significantly on streaming (over 1 million). The only other week UF had a sudden streaming drop like that was the week UF missed out on tying the Top 10 record and fell from 8 to 12. UF won't make it back to the Top 20, but I think Bad Blood, Drag Me Down, and maybe Downtown will drop back below it this week. This would put UF back up at around #23. Marvin Gaye has peaked, and I don't think the Mill/Minaj collaboration will climb much higher (there are streams Nielsen neglected to count for a few weeks, and we believe that's what's caused the surge now, but we could be wrong).

After the 8-12 drop UF barely moved for the next nine weeks, and it's sales and airplay are virtually unchanged from last week. UF is falling just a little on Spotify, but the lower the song ranks, in the fewer streams there are separating the tracks anyway. I haven't heard UF losing video streams this week, so I think the faster falling songs (BB, DMD) will bump UF back up a bit, and DT will need to grow legs for a couple of more weeks before it's standing firm. It won't be long until See You Again falls below UF, and maybe even TOL. Also, I can't see where the performance with Swift gave SYA any boost in either sales or on Spotify. Since I really wanted SYA to get to 4 million so we could have a song from 2015 sell 4 million copies before 2015 ended, the fact it's slowed down so much and it's just now reaching 3.5 million is a huge disappointment.

I'll be glad when real Rock music finally returns to mainstream radio.  Active Rock has been gone for far too long, and the format has a lot of great hits the Pop Quadrant (consisting of AC, Hot AC, Rhythmic, and Top 40) refuse to touch.  A few agressive Hot AC stations will throw some of the Rock power ballads a bone now and then, but the last truly successful Active Rock crossover (started at AR and Alternative at the same time) was "Second Chance," which hit Rock in late 2008 and mainstream in early 2009.  "Radioactive" and "Sail" crossed over from Alt to AR before going to PQ stations (so did "Love Somebody" released not long after Second Chance), so they don't quite count.  But until about ten years ago getting real Rock music on PQ stations minus Rhythmic and softer AC wasn't that hard.

ODS and VS are weighed the same, though there is a disagreement between chart watchers who think ODS should be weighed heavier and those that think they should count the same.  I feel like ODS should be heavier, since you are clearly streaming a song on ODS only for the song, whereas with VS you could be watching it for the video or even someone mocking the song and/or artist with their video.
