I always assumed this was paid/negotiated lol. If so, I wonder if she is gearing up to release new music soon. Like, a single at the end of the year though I doubt we will have a cd that soon.

This is an event they produce and the award goes to whoever they can get…

All joking aside, was there really a better choice besides Taylor again? Gaga's Grammy performance, Oscar performance, and AHS announcement were a pretty big 1-2-3 punch for generating buzz on her this year. Her Oscar performance especially had everyone talking for a few weeks. Again besides Taylor, I can't think of a female singer that got that much buzz for anything this year. Now just imagine her with a successful album again. She'd be unstoppable!

Looking at the winners of this award, it seems that Billboard tends to give it to people a year or two after that person has had a big year. - Ciara got it 1 1/2 to two years after The Evolution (which wasn't a badly performing album), but a full year before Fantasy Ride happened. Go Girl hadn't even been released yet. It only looks weird in retrospect. - Beyonce got it when IASF was winding down - Fergie got it after BEP had a huge year with The Beginning - Katy received it the year after TD - Pink received it after The Truth About Love was done. - Taylor, like Beyonce, received it when Speak Now and Red were at the end of their respective runs. Bey and Taylor are the only two who actually received the award somewhat 'on time.'
The only one who throws this off is the first recipient, Reba. After her, Billboard immediately veered from awarding legends to finding of-the-moment pop stars to give it to, but for whatever reason, is always a step or two behind with it. Once you account for the lag, the award makes total sense although probably still paid for by someone's publicist, but never mind that. Gaga being a recipient is not unusual at all; if anything she is now one of the few who is getting the award during the year in which almost everything she's done to be considered for it has occurred. Like popbox said, she actually has had a good year, just more lowkey than we are used to when thinking about Lady Gaga.

With that formula Adele should've gotten it after her record breaking run. 8 Grammy awards between 2012-2014, 3 #1 singles, a diamond certified album, and an Oscar... somebody dropped the ball.

^tbh I would not be surprised if Adele turned them down lol. She should have gotten it the year Katy did (the year after would have also been acceptable), but she pretty much disappeared after she announced she was pregnant. And this isn't the Grammys so I guess someone had to let Katy win something.

Pretty much agree with popbox. It really is weird that she is getting that NOW, but if you think about it, who else could have gotten it other than Taylor again. Also it must really be a setup for a media comeback along with AHS, and the entire winter with the performances.

Hmmm she should continue with AMA performance of Till It Happens to You where she announces the release date of new single/album. That'd be perfect.
