What is more popular nowadays: streaming or radio? (popular as in used by the biggest number of people) I don't know much about streaming numbers, so does the #1 song usually get around 200 mi as on radio?

Streaming songs may get 20-25m streams at #1 in a week on average probably, but that does not take into account how many people are listening the way radio does. 1 stream could be heard by only 1 person or by 200 people in a gym or restaurant or party. I think if you looked at the numbers based on how many people actively listen to radio/streaming (as opposed to just being somewhere that music is being played) the numbers would probably be pretty close or streaming may even win.

But how can radio take into account how many people are listening to a song in a gym or even in a car? I had no idea the top streaming song got only 25 mi in a week. I assumed it'd be way more.

I work part-time in a gym, and a lot of people still use iPods/shuffles. That's an example of listening to music that isn't captured by any chart component. You have to also think about the breadth that streaming represents. One song may only get 20-25 million streams in a week, but that's because people are listening to so many songs. In other words, there are obviously a lot more songs streamed than get radio play.

I was going to ask the same thing earlier today when i saw it on iTunes... except with the amazingly beautiful part.... because it felt very average country song to me. This coming from a guy who grew up with horses and country music for the first half of my life... and worked in country radio for over 3 years in the 90s. I just don't get why it's such a standout country track. But you saying it's amazingly beautiful explains a little i guess? I just don't hear it.

Radio has been designed to be measured by estimating how many people are listening. Those numbers you see are educated guesses. The only hard data with radio is number of plays, and I'm not sure how many plays a #1 song gets. Maybe 50,000? Airplay is the only factor in the hot 100 based on estimates not hard data.

The song's on play during a class period and then I heard this song after the hearsay that it's a ripoff of a GENERIC AND NOT-CATCHY-AT-ALL ED SHEERAN SONG. It was magical, I immediately fell head over heels in love with this song and the affectionate lyrics, the soft voice that gives significance to sweet romance and the word "die" in the title gives it a bittersweet and more dramatic sort of feel. Besides, Die a Happy Man is wayyyyyy more beautiful and MUCH CATCHIER than the counterpart from Ed Sheeren. This song makes me wanna fall in love with Thomas Rhett while the "biggest hit of the year" is rather unconvincing to me! Besides, critics mostly love this song as well.

Also, is boring Thinking out Loud's success based upon Ed Sheeran's fan base or his bombarding promotion or both? Cuz man.. This is like one of the biggest mystery for me this year: what make this dry and cliched love song such a blockbuster, but instead, his relatively more acclaimed song like The A Team or Don't are just moderately successful?

^they may be. But keep in mind the primary purpose of that tracking is really to sell ads. It's in their best interests to inflate the numbers as high as possible.

But there must be a way to prevent radio stations from inflating their audience figures, no? (as well as to prevent tv from inflating their ratings, or studios from inflating their box office reports) Why else would a network ever report their TV show is flopping hard?

It's not the radio stations individually, it's Nielsen BDS. I doubt it's some crazy over inflation. It's just that it basically treats the guy jamming out in his car to his favorite song on the radio the same as the person who hears half a song they hate quietly in the background at the dentist's office. That second guy is not exactly an engaged listener.

I could see Adele and Ariana selling, say, 300,000 on week 1, but week 2 onwards they will sell less.
They will probably both get radio deals, but it might take about a month for them to catch up with Hotline Bling's airplay?
I think both are releasing music videos on release week, but can they ever hope to top Drake's streaming? Adele and Ariana both do brilliant in streaming, but Drake arguably does even better. I think Hotline Bling could get Wrecking Ball/Anaconda levels of streams in the coming weeks tbh.
The question is can their sales leads out-weigh their airplay and streaming deficits? I do think Hotline Bling could genuinely block them. Remember when people were sure Katy and Gaga would debut above Blurred Lines, and they didn't (although I think they both overtook after a few weeks)?
I think Hotline Bling will get more than 1 week at #1 basically.
